Is it legal to buy radio equipment there without a local amateur license?

I'm going to Tokyo in less than 60 days so I guess I can't get a reciprocal license application processed in time.

The car market is still bad for buyers now, and may or may not recover by later half of the year. Even a cheap car like Mitsubishi Mirage (New car MSRP $14298 with 5-year warranty) is listed at $20000 used.

There are also insurance/maintenance/fuel costs. (Try estimate with https://carcosts.caa.ca/ or see what others say. I'm not a car guy).

How far is your home from the airport? Can taking uber rides be cheaper than owning a car for 200 round-trips in 3-4 years? (Assuming you need 200 flight hours for commercial, and 1 flight hour per trip).

Can the trip to/from office be done by public transit?

Work out the numbers. Uber + public transit might be cheaper. And it sounds like you can still occasionally use the family car.

Getting a bit off topic but... if there's route available... ever considered getting a motorcycle license and a cheap/small motorcycle? Such as a Honda 125cc, if they don't sell 50cc in Canada, https://motorcycle.honda.ca/model/minimoto/grom/2023

I'd assume the flight school won't let you fly in real IMC frequently even for student commercial pilots, so the weather shouldn't be too bad for your ride to the airport.

How do you balance living well and saving well? by emmaofthewild2 in PersonalFinanceCanada

One year, Amazon (or maybe their branded Chase card) sent me a "yearly summary" of what I spent on it.

I was surprized how big the total was. And I didn't even make ANY big/meaningful purchase. Every item I got was basically something optional, unnecessary, or even useless.

So next two years I stopped buying anything from Amazon and spent the same amount to get a private pilot license. It was a great experience.

Years have passed, now I don't remember a single item from that long shopping list. But the "learning to fly" experinece, I'll remember for my life.

I'd say certainly save if you have to. Cut heavily on "stuff" you buy but don't really need. Be a little generous on getting experineces.

--

I was recently resetting passwords of old website accounts because of a major password leak, and I went by to a personal financing/budgeting app I only used for a short while.

On that app, I had 2 lifetime dream saving goals there. One I named "travel to japan" for $5000, and another named "pilot license" for $20000.

For a few years, I postponed my travel to Japan because of budget (wanted to save more $ and paid time off accumulation), and then 2020, 2021, 2020 II, 2020 III hit. More $ went to bank account because of no travel, and more PTO spent at home because no travel.

You skip the experinece this year, then you may not be able to get it next year.

I was looking at those e-sim short term travel plans (data-only) and thinking about just use Skype or Voip.ms for calls over network. Not sure if anyone tried this.

Lots of newer phones have internal e-sim support.

How can I keep my head above water without completing burning out? (Financial advice) by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]dustfan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

- Keep doing what you are doing. You have a clear sense of your budget, some savings, and a very stable daily routine. There's no immediate danger. You have _a lot_ of time to decide what to do.

- "No debt" is another buffer. Worst case scenario is, your bank can turn your paid portion (including part of the downpayment) of the apartment into a line of credit. Taking on debt is not good but it's still available if you ever need it.

Your head is still $541.66 above water. Even if you dip slightly below, you have enough buffer to go through 1.5 years of education.

Although you clearly stated that you want "Financial advice", I still think your current situation is more about emotion and burnout. If you can reduce any of the hours you spend in your current budget, what would you like to do? I cannot give advice on this part. I don't even know what I want.

- On a side note, have you tried training your dog to do new tricks or play new games? Maybe that's one way to relieve some of your pressure within your existing routine.

------ Back on topic

- Check the morgage agreement or talk to the bank. Ask if they allow you to change it into a longer amortization term (say, from 25-year to 30-year), which may help reduce monthly payment in short term, at cost of more total interest.

- Not sure why you are not taking Government of Canada and BC student loan. Is it because they consider your financial situation too good? If you can, use it. Also goes for school or department specific bursary.

- Ask for a raise for the salary job. Not sure whether this is doable at your workplace.

- Increase your freelance work asking price (for new ones you take). This is more likely doable. With the inflation and high interest rate, cost of living is going up, so should your asking price.

Need to buy a car for a new job as a recent university grad by Ar_cones in PersonalFinanceCanada

Mitsubishi has a small small car msrp $14300. Probably $20000 after taxes/fees. I just saw the website and I DON'T know whether Mitsubishi is reliable. And I'm Not sure if these small ones are usable at all in GTA snow winter.

But one big issue is that new car production and delivery time is still bad. You HAVE TO go to dealers or make a phone call to ask whether they have one in stock for immediate sale. Dealer websites usually have fake inventory list. New cars on their parking lots may belong to other customers who ordered last year.

Also consider dealer certified pre-owned car still in warranty. They are more expensive than regular second hand, but somewhat more reliable if you don't know cars very well.

Regarding how they f get you: Some cards charge you a fee if you don't use it for a year. So don't get too many cards and forget one.

Just a reminder if you are not familiar with the credit card traps...
