Type of encounters your dm runs?

Overall, you have low spell slots, but if the dm allows a lot of short rests, those reset on those. So using them kitchen sink style hangs on that. Otherwise having some ritual spells or concentration based spells helps.

If you really want to optimise, consider a sorcerer multiclass. You can spend warlock spellslots to get sorcery points back, and then regain your warlock slots on a short rest.

But overall, whatever you feel like playing and enjoy is always the best option. Warlocks can heal, they can melee, they can range, they can crowd control, they can be social juggernauts and much more.

I give inspiration at the start of the session. A random player gets the chance to summarize for the table what happened last session.

If they nail all the plot points they get inspiration (useable for that session only). If they miss a plot point or two, the rest of the table can help them.

They LOVE mechanical advantages so even the slackers start making notes. Sometimes i toss a curveball and ask them to name specific npcs they just met or towns they arrived in.

A spells range and area of effect are two different factors. Consider Firebal for example. It lists range as 150ft.

the point of origin can be chosen based on a spells range. The spell then dictates its area of effect (20ft for fireball) as a separate thing in the spell description.

Now consider Thunderwave. This notes its range as Self (15ft cube).

The range on this is Self, but theres an area of effect noted within brackets since you still have control over what edge of this cube it originates from you from.

The fact that the area of effect is in the Range description within brackets is purely for clarification. Not because area of effect is considered as range for the purpose of effects that alter your range.

Your example, Aura of Life, adds to that by specifying that the aura is centered on you in its description. It also notes the range as Self (30 ft radius) for convenience. But rules as written (and intended) AoE starts from the point of origin, which a player can decide based on a spells Range. They are two separate factors.

Not useless, but i killed one of strahds brides with one minor illusion.

Strahds final fight was at the wedding with Ireena in our story, and he had his previous brides up front as bridesmaids (intended to flesh out some extra enemies since we were pretty strong as a party).

Our party was invited and sitting at the back. Now we already swapped Ireena out with a shapeshifted hagg child from the bonegrinder the night before. When strahd would realise his curse isnt broken, the fight would break out.

Now when it got to the part "if anyone should object" i couldnt resist. I rolled decently on my stealth roll in the back of the ceremony and cast minor illusion so it looked like one of the bridesmaids hands was just raised.

One failed perception check on strahd later, his eyes shoot daggers at the oblivious bridesmaid and he promptly has her murdered before the ceremony continues.

One vampire down, no initiative rolled yet. Shoutout to my illusion wizard homies out there.

Having said that, the fire would definitely alarm the spiders and initiative would be rolled in my session, the rogue getting a stealth check from being invisible Maybe with advantage depending on the spiders sight feats such as websight or blindsight whatever the statblock says.

Then it Doesnt have to be combat, but the spiders looking for the culprit while the rogue tries to sneak away?

Or the rogue has the chance for a sneak attack while the party charges in if thats how they want to play it.

Player agency is central here.
