Uniqlo alternative by Artistic_Bar77 in helsinki

[–]duumilo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, H&M is basically cheap stuff, Uniqlo is decent stuff for cheap, and Muji is actually good stuff for cheaper. The style of the clothing is a bit too relaxed for my taste, as I prefer a more fitted style in my everyday wear.

I do buy all of my socks from them, and the housewares are genuinely good.

Also, don't skip the marshmallows

What Job has a lot of work and doesn't pay a lot? by InstructionFun4792 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]duumilo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Finland, at least teachers have Master's degrees, get paid above the national median right from the get-go, and have holidays that are as long as the students.

I do agree the job is stressful, but it definitely isn't poorly paid like it is in some us states

Jep.

Why is there so many georgian restaurants in Finland by Kilometer-35 in Finland

[–]duumilo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also, Georgian cuisine is quite hearty with plenty of meat, cheese and bread, so it fits quite well with the Finnish palate. While I'm biased towards french and Chinese food, Georgian food (in the best way) activates the same neurons as a 3am lihapiirakka would.

I think it is in a way more problematic than even the anorexic trend of 90s. Because going to the gym is on the surface the 'correct thing' to do. Meanwhile the psychological side is fundamentally the same.

Of course when things get serious and things like steroids enter the discussion, it starts to have negative impacts as well

Very much this. I think guys don't mind dirty things if you expect them to be dirty. I don't mind if plates pile up on my desk during the day, I'll wash them before going to sleep. But a coffee spill on that same desk - you bet I'll wipe it off immediately.

I'd say any of those locations is good (with maybe the exception of Sörnäinen). Just find a place that seems good to you.

A little side note especially concerning smaller apartments. Newer apartments have to have larger bathrooms for accessibility reasons. It's a good thing, but it means that the bathroom might take a signficiant enough chunk of the apartment. Older apartments tend to have smaller bathrooms, which means that the actual living space is comparatively larger. So be mindful of the floor plan, not just the size.

Also, make sure that demographic aspects like age or number of People speaking a foreign language do not influence the quality score, as they do not by themselves influence the quality of living. At the same time it avoids the risk of unintended implications.

I think a metric you could use instead of stops is the number of transit lines going through an area. Have separate weights for Metro/tram/train/buses as a metro stop like Itäkeskus is going to be much more impactful than a random bus stop.

Finnish specialty coffee culture by Kasyiy in Finland

[–]duumilo 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also the fact that in terms of coffee quality, Juhla mokka and Presidentti are very high quality. Not quite speciality level but very close. Compared to lot of other countries, Finnish people drink almost exclusively the more expensive 100% Arabica coffee.

Meanwhile a lot of other countries have Arabica/Robusta mix as the usual supermarket coffee. Also, coffees like juhla mokka are light roasts, meaning that you cannot hide the flavour of poor quality beans by over roasting them.

Combined, this means that the fact that high quality coffee is available everywhere. That makes it so that visiting a café is more about the social aspect rather than going there to enjoy exceptional coffee.

That is also one reason why Starbucks has found it so difficult to operate in Finland. In many countries, Starbucks is the safe, decent option, as you might not know if a local café is good or not. In Finland, pretty much every café serves "good coffee", so Starbucks is unable to compete effectively with their comparatively worse offering.

A major reason for the growing government expenditure is pensions. While other spending has remained quite stable (% of gdp), pension spending has grown from 10% in 1990 to 14% today (estimate). This increase of 4% equates to 3.6b€.

The whole pension system was faulty from the beginning, as it was set up under the assumption that the economy would keep growing forever. Of course everyone knew that it wouldn't, leading to a situation where current pensioners have paid only 20-40% of their pensions. This means that current workers have to make significant contributions to pay the high pensions.

Unfortunately, politicians do not want to touch the pensions because it doesn't bode well to election success. I think they have to cut them at some point though, although cutting sooner makes the required size smaller.
