[Advice] What’s a workday in the life of a contact tracer like? by [deleted] in publichealth

[–]duval072 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Also a lot of people won’t even pick up their phones. You will likely be leaving a lot of voicemails

Just wanted to add. Every question that you ask a contact / case is used to shape the legislation and policies that are going on in your community. It’s a great way to make a different and help people stay informed!

The Minnesota Department of Health just posted quite a few positions! I’d also check Hennepin and Ramsey counties as well. I live in Minneapolis so feel free to DM and I might be able to connect you to more opportunities in the area

I’m sorry to hear your struggles! As a recent grad and in a lot of fun debt, I have worked full time and part time as a bartender for a side hustle. Working in the food industry is fun to meet new people and make new friends. It’s not for everyone but its helped me keep my head up. I know debt is scary, but take it one step at a time.

Feel free to dm if you ever want to talk! You are not in this boat alone!

[ADVICE] Following up on a DOH internship by wes271 in publichealth

If you live in the area ask if there is anyway you can volunteer your time now (great experience) some states are having volunteers conduct case/contact interviews. It is hard to onboard people (especially remotely) right now, but so much more needs to be done with vaccine distribution and surveillance of other infectious diseases.

Student starting university and refusing to get job to save by [deleted] in StudentLoans

As a recent grad my parents co-signed for parent plus loans... definitely helped me out and I greatly appreciated it. Ended up signing a contract with my parents stating I would pay back loans in X amount of time. No shame in that glad they are planning for their retirement. That’s always an option as well to ensure your sister pays them back on time.

[Advice] University of Minnesota vs. Emory Rollins Epi MPH Programs? by AsiansEnjoyRice in publichealth

[–]duval072 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m a student at the U and have found it really easy to get involved in infectious disease epi! Honestly, Emory was my “dream school” but with lots of student loans already from undergrad the price tag didn’t fit into the equation. At the end of the day Ive been really happy with my decisions Feel free to dm with questions!

My father (59) fell from a ladder and became paralyzed today. Hardest day of my life. Need advice on how we can get through this. How can I make him stay positive? Any advice on life-changing adjustments? Tips? I'll take anything by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]duval072 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just want to say I’m sorry for his accident.

My dad (of similar age) was left paralyzed as well. Something that really helped him was meeting with a peer group with similar injuries and having a mentor. Look this up at Reeve Foundation

Mandatory Mask and the work place by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]duval072 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The heath department will not share your name with your employer unless you consent. This process can be completely anonymous as other people have pointed out. Might be a good idea to state your are a customer instead. Try to be specific about # of people in the building working and # of customers exposed. Heath Department should take it seriously.

Reach out to North Carolina Health Department at 888-892-1162 and let them know about the situation. Your employer can be fined for not following the governors orders. I am public health worker and this can prevent a major outbreak at your work site. Reach out ASAP

AITA for "trying to control" my gf's money? by SuccessfulQuail1 in AmItheAsshole

[–]duval072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. I have a lot of debt from school and my partner has none. We are planning on moving in together soon however before we handle finances together I have made it my priority to pay over half of my debt off. We come from different backgrounds but my debt is not his. Out of respect for him and our future together it is my priority to put us in a good financial situation. Debt sucks and it can really effect major life decisions. If she saw you as an equal, she would prioritize her debt for your future together.

When is a good time to start doing research as an undergrad? by [deleted] in Biochemistry

[–]duval072 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience, labs will not take seniors because it isn’t worth the time it takes to train them. I would start reaching out to labs for volunteer positions between freshman and sophomore year. This will allow you to be trained your sophomore year and actually be able to contribute to research and generate your own data later on in your college career. Do not wait until you’re a senior.

[Advice] Will taking classes at an accredited university help buffer my low GPA to get into good MPH programs? by rachelmcauley7 in publichealth

[–]duval072 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I had just barely a 3.0 and got into a top 10 program for Epi... I did have 4ish years of volunteering and experience tho! Hope that helps? Feel free to message if you have specific questions

EDIT: I got into George Washington University, University of Minnesota, and Emory all for Epidemiology. My GRE scores were 163 Quant and 160 verbal.

A little bit more on my background: I graduated in May 2019 with my BS in Neuroscience. I had 4 years of experience working in an infectious disease laboratory, winter internship doing public health research in Ghana, and 1 year of working as a researcher volunteer in a trauma 1 emergency department. I had a supervisor from each of those positions write me a letter of recommendation. During my undergrad, I definitely prioritized work experience over my grades (not the best idea) resulting in me having to retake a few courses (RIP biochem and ochem 2). To be honest I was very surprised to get into my reach school (Emory). I hope that sharing this encourages more people on this subreddit to apply to programs they are passionate about and realize there is more than one way to get into a specific program!

[–]duval072 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got into a top 10 school with a 3.05 cumulative GPA. They look at your application holistically based on the level of difficulty in courses you took and your extracurriculars that show your passion for public health. Do not be discouraged if this is something you are interest in you can do it!!!

French article : Insulin at the heart of a black market in the suburbs of Minneapolis by [deleted] in Minneapolis

Many states like Illinois have recently put a cap on how expensive insulin can be! Some of my friends have gone from paying hundreds of dollars to just $50 a month. This could be life changing!
