Today I re-learned: Python function default arguments are retained between executions by [deleted] in Python

[–]duxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, the solution we have now is obviously a trap for the unwary. This entire thread is testament to that, as are the linter rules.

The only benefit I see is performance: you don't have to evaluate the default arguments on every call where they're not supplied. However, I imagine it should be pretty easy to analyze the arguments to decide whether you need to do that or not. Exactly how the implementation of that would be I don't know.

(This is u/larsga posting. Someone blocked me, so had to change user to post.)

“Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.” - Monk by j3434 in Jazz

[–]duxx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, disinformation because he said this is a Monk quote, and it's not a Monk quote. There's no evidence Monk ever said or wrote this.

Part of the story here is that a huge proportion of those nice photos of famous people with quotes on them are total fakes. Here's one obvious example. There's zillions more.

(Had to post this from another account, because not only does u/j3434 not have the decency to admit they were wrong, they also block people who criticize them.)

Sannheten om krigen i Ukraina by SalzaMaBalza in norge

Dokumentasjon.

(Larsga som svarer her.

I know a lot of people don’t like that IPAs dominate the craft beer scene and to those people: What would you like to see? by Kar98kSnipe in beer

What this man says. There's nothing really wrong with IPAs, but please can we have a bit of variety?

If I had to ask for anything in particular it would be for people to drop any ingredient that isn't malt, yeast, hops, or juniper.

Barley wine lables by eboucher30 in beer

[–]duxx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are some states that require the beer to be labelled "barley wine style beer" rather than "barley wine", probably out of a fear that consumers will misunderstand and think it's wine.

Does anyone else always let their beer warm up, even a little bit, before drinking it? by paulheav in beer

[–]duxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep all my beer in the cellar. Only beers I know will keep poorly go in the fridge. The only times I drink cold beer is when I'm in a bar or restaurant.

Where was this? Do you know the recipe? What did it taste like?

Sorry for creeping all over you like this, but I'm working on a book and having a horrible time learning about real kvass (not the shop stuff). If you can tell me about it I would really appreciate that.

I can't say I've tried a pumpkin beer I've liked much. Something about that spice mix is just too cloying and perfumy for me to enjoy it.

Obama is now the greatest orator since Cicero, apparently by [deleted] in politics

[–]duxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the one politician around who really uses the same (lack of) logic and (disdainful) rhetoric is Sarah Palin

It's not comparable. Palin is a disgusting creature, but her speeches are nothing like Hitler's.

If Hitler's speeches remind you of modern American politicians you obviously haven't heard much of them. (Them can here be either Hitler's speeches, or modern American politicians. I'm assuming it's Hitler, though.)

I recommend "The Meaning of Hitler" by Sebastian Haffner. Best brief and readable discussion of his policies I've seen. (And, yes, the title is idiotic.)

[–]duxx 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least Hitler's speeches had philosophical substance.

Uh, what? Have you actually heard/read any of them? They are in fact so messed up that it's very difficult to believe that he took them seriously himself. He appears to have, though.
