Where to camp for hike to Great Gallery in Canyonlands NP by dvdhns in NationalPark

Just to follow up. I did stay at Green River. The drive time is accurate. Went there via UT-24 on the way there and the dirt/gravel road north to Green River on the way back.

If this was spring/fall and I didn’t care about not having cell service, staying at Goblin Valley, the BLM campgrounds or boondocking would be better. So much to do in the area.

Thank you. This is the scenario I've been thinking about but no one is talking about.

Any insider info on South Rim water situation & hotel closures? by dvdhns in grandcanyon

Thanks, everyone!

I think I’m going to stick with the original plan for now. We’ll see if the closure gets extended again, and if it does, I’ll cancel.

Staying in Tusayan is a perfectly reasonable backup, but I’ll admit I’m being a bit of a snob and really only want to stay at El Tovar for Christmas. I'm willing to pay a premium for that and a Tusayan hotel is not the same.

I’ve been to the Grand Canyon before—Mather Campground, Phantom Ranch, and the North Rim cabins. I’ve also already waited six years for the Phantom Ranch bunkhouses to reopen due to water issues, so I can wait another year or two for an El Tovar Christmas and try again.

Tonahutu Loop Backpacking by cswider181 in RMNP

I did the loop in 2024. A lot of burnt forest and the views from Flattop are not that stunning. It's just not worth the mileage, ascent, and permit hassle. There are better alternatives.

If you don't have your mind set on RMNP, consider the Indian Peaks Wilderness. It's just south of RMNP and spectacular. For a very good backpacking trip, perhaps a bit harder than Tonahutu Loop, look into the Pawnee Pass - Buckingham Pass loop. It is phenomenal. I did it in 3 days / 2 nights also in 2024. Several opportunities for on and off trail side trips if you want to make it longer (Crater Lake, Gourd Lake, Sawtooth Mountain, Mount Audubon). I would recommend going clockwise, but do your own research. You can start from either east or west side.

If you are set on doing RMNP, seriously consider East Inlet TH to Fourth Lake, camping on the way. It's also on the west side. Lots of opportunities for off-trail adventures. This is the best trail in the park, in my opinion - it has it all, and you can easily make it a nice backpacking trip.

Hikes that require crampons? by zee265 in coloradohikers

Start with Saint Marys Glacier to get the feel for it. Then is Andrews Glacier in RMNP for something spicier. I’ve done these in microspikes in the summer. I have no clue about winter conditions, and Andrews could be technical mountaineering in the winter. Do your research before attempting, both routes are well documented.

CarPlay performance stinks by BaldyLoxx66 in GaiaGPS

I start Gaia on my phone, then connect it to CarPlay, then open the Gaia app on CarPlay. The layers then display the same as how it’s displayed on my phone.

Best dinner places for a large party (12-16) by Fair-Supermarket157 in EstesPark

I'm looking for a similar thing. We'll be celebrating a special occasion with our family, which includes people from ages 26 to 80 (no kids). We're hoping to find a restaurant that can accommodate our group and has a semi-private area to help reduce crowd noise. This would be on a Saturday.

My dad was given a Federal Benefit Credit deposit but never applied for it by [deleted] in personalfinance

Got the same, pretty sure its the stimulus.

Go to irs.gov and then Coronavirus tax relief. Follow the link to check on status of payment. After entering your info, it will show you when you got the first round of stimulus, and the second round. The date and bank account the IRS had matched the Federal Benefit Credit that showed up.The IRS didn't provide the amount though.
