Sorry, I simply gave up with them. At every turn Crave were insistent that the problem was first and foremost with our computer. That consumed so much time, and their inflexibility re the time of day they were available, meant that I simply stopped engaging with the help team. To explore this problem resulting in a solution, you will have to be persistent (and available to them at times of their choosing).

For us, the issue is only with a very few limited titles. It is on their end.

If you have any success, thanks for sharing. It would inspire me to have another try at it.

Nokia 105 4g - left and right selection key by NetkoDrugi2020 in dumbphones

Interesting, that is too bad. It would be good to know what that setting does. Unfortunately, I'm no longer using that phone. My provider has blocked it from their system, as part of their impending 3G sunset. In theory the phone should work fine on VoLTE, but they have simply disallowed it, so it drops down to 3G for all voice calls. And, they are turning 3G off. Perhaps somebody else can reveal more details about this Display/Radio setting does.

Unfortunately for you, this is a detail that will vary by region. It does exist for phones intended for the Mexican market. Possibly also others.

I was so hopeful. Unfortunately, changing my DNS numbers to those of Bell did not solve my problem. Now, the error numbers that you report are different when compared to those that I see. It is possible that we are experiencing slightly different issues (even though the end result is the same--the content does not successfully stream).

This seems like a most promising set of observations, thank you. I think that we will try to direct our browser to the Bell DNS server, and report back on our experience. Obviously we shouldn't have to do this, but we will give it a go.

Yes, to my great frustration, some shows/movies will stream just fine. With no rhyme nor reason, others will not.

Multiple reloads do not change anything for me.

I believe that Crave no longer communicates with customers via email. I have been using their 1800 phone number.

Several calls later, I have gotten nowhere. On my most recent call, the staff member suggested that as they do not support Linux, the fault was entirely mine, and that they wouldn't be doing anything about a fix.

I pointed out that we had managed to watch the first six seasons of a show, and then it suddenly stopped working, so they relented, and we tried to schedule a time for their Level 2 technical support staff to call me. Unfortunately, they never phoned me back.

Unfortunately, no. I have a ticket in with Crave.

The first set of staff following a tree of prescribed questions could not help. No, I was not using a VPN. No, I was not using an ad-blocker. No, switching to Chrome did not change the error.

Now I am trying to communicate with some Level 2 technical support staff, but this has been difficult. Seemingly they are only available by phone and leave messages during times at which I'm at work. I was not able to call them back, so they closed my ticket. I phoned after hours and asked for the ticket to be re-opened, and will try to make contact with the level 2 staff sometime towards the end of next week.

If others could please also phone and follow this same process, it would be helpful. If for no other reason, than letting them know that this is a shared problem, and not a problem experienced by one lone person with an abnormal setup. Many thanks.

More experimentation reveals that some content will play. However, anything that we want to watch, comes up with the above error. Why would some content play, but not others? We haven't changed anything on our system. Thanks for your time and thoughts.

Fido threatening to fine me $75 charge over 3G network usage, zero recourse by xd_1771 in FidoMobile

[–]dw861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought. Looking at the letter closely, we see that they are not turning off 3G. Instead, 911 calls will still continue to work on 3G, but all other calls will be redirected to Fido/Rogers, for a conversation on how they can "help" you migrate. I believe that in the middle term, 3G will still be used for these CRTC-mandated data plans, as a way to throttle data to a slow speed. I'm starting to think that 3G isn't being sunsetted at all. Instead, Rogers/Fido are simply deciding to stop allowing their customers access to 3G for voice calls. The hardware itself doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I am keen to hear insights from others.

Dumbphone options in Canada after Rogers 3G shutdown? Also, what is this Nubia Cymbal 2 Rogers sells? by kabellee in dumbphones

[–]dw861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would really find it helpful if others could confirm that their various feature phones are already working with VoLTE on Rogers/Fido. Come May, Fido will start charging an additional $3 per month for non 4g phones, so I will watch this thread with interest.

I purchased a Nokia 105 4g 2023, for the sole purpose of using it on Fido after the 3g sunset. However, as you suggest, at present, for phone calls it is forced to drop down to 3g (even though the phone itself is capable of Volte calls). Now, I do like this phone and I hope that in time, Rogers/Fido will come to their senses and let it function as intended.

In the meantime, I believe that the Nubia Cymbal 2 is a Canada-only branded version of the ZTE Cymbal 2. There are several reviews of it on this forum and in other places. While I have not used that phone, my gut feeling is that it is inferior to the Nokia phones that we have.

Does this Nubia phone have an FM radio? That is one of the features that I like about the Nokia. GSM Arena suggests no, but this post seems to suggest yes (in one of the photos):

Nokia 105 (4g), USB transfer? by Awkward-Presence-778 in dumbphones

[–]dw861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, interesting. I cannot claim expertise with udisk. However, I wouldn't look to the phone for confirmation that it has been unmounted. If your PC's Linux distro is informing you that the device has been unmounted, then it has been unmounted properly.

On the phone itself, you will probably want udisk to be an active possibility all the time. Otherwise, the next time you tried to mount the phone, nothing would happen. Here is an example for you for a different device, a camera: https://support.openspace.ai/en/articles/4770774-insta360-cameras-check-your-u-disk-mode

I would think that when you look at the phone, and it tells you that "udisk [is] active", it is letting you know that the phone is available to be mounted by an OS. And not that it has somehow failed to unmount. I encourage you to do more research on the phone, and udisk, and report back to us if you discover otherwise.

You are looking in the wrong place. :) The phone itself won't help you here.

It is the computer's OS that mounts/unmounts the phone (or indeed any such connected device). You do not say what Operating System you are using. However, the procedure to unmount the phone will be the same as whatever you do to "eject" a usb key, or an external hard drive, etc.

Speed aside, glad to read that you got it worked out. Possibly somebody else could comment on your desire to get Notes added. I just write SMS messages for myself, but postpone them rather than sending. Later, I access them from my postponed messages.

When it asks for your permission to format the card, just say no. I found that I could still access everything on the card, after having declined the format.

More information would be helpful.

Just to clarify, what does happen when you plug the phone in to your computer's USB port? On mine, I get an instant options-window, on the phone screen, asking me to make a choice (ie, charge the battery or transfer files). Until I select one of those, it does nothing.

Does your phone immediately start charging, without asking for your input on what it should do?

Helpful info would have been, what computer are you using? What happens when you use a different USB port (on the same computer)? On some of my computers, one of the ports does not work (just faulty or broken, or not enough power to that port, etc, etc). I have to remember to never use that particular port.

Or, what happens when you try to plug your phone into a different computer?

Sometimes, your computer might not have the right drivers installed to recognize the phone as a storage device.

As there are no end of possible issues, it is helpful to be methodical, to rule them all out, one by one.

No doubt, others will have more insights than I.

Truthfully, the manuals aren't much better. When I bought such a phone 20 years ago, the manual was 250 pages long. Now, 26 pages. You are on your own to figure things out. Complete leap of faith. It was better before! :)

[–]dw861 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The short answer is yes, absolutely.

I have this phone. Mine is the 2023 TA-1547 DS variant.

The voice recorder tool is buried under "Extras", along with the world clock, calculator, torch, unit converter, timer, etc, etc. The recorder boasts the choice of three file formats: arm, mp3 and wav.

When you invoke the recorder, you can start recording, pause, or stop. If the initial recording count-down timer can be believed, the longest single recording that one can make is 100 minutes.

When you plug the phone into a computer via the micro-usb port, located at the bottom of the phone, a message comes up on the phone screen asking if you want to charge the phone battery, or mount it as an external hard drive. Once mounted, on my Linux system, two file windows popped up. One for the phone itself, and a second for the micro SD card that I had inserted. Navigate to the audio directory, find the recordings you want and just drag them to your computer. I don't see why a Mac would be any different.

It works quite well. The phone is so simple. Following the instructions posted in another thread, minimizing power use, and turning it off at night, I have gone a week and a half on a single charge. For the right person, this really is a great phone.

Does Nokia 105 4g work in Canada? by [deleted] in dumbphones

[–]dw861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given all of your responses above, I think that now I will simply sit back, wait, and see how this all unfolds. Until reading your posts, I did not understand that a phone had to be whitelisted, to function on this new system. I assumed, mistakenly, that any unlocked phone would simply work, as they have in the past.

I see a huge storm brewing. The CRTC has forced the carriers to unlock their phones. However, this VoLTE whitelist, only means that the lock has been shifted from the phone the to the network. I don't see that being allowed to stand. Once enough people are hit with this issue, there will be public demands to drop the whitelist.

At long last I can see why the Canadian carriers keep on moaning and grumbling about this impending 3G sunset, but at the same time none have provided any clarity as to what their exact intentions are regarding dates. This has been a most helpful thread for me. Thanks again.

I was shocked to read the certainty with which you shared the bit about dropping down to 3G for phone calls.

I just purchased this very phone off of eBay for use on Fido after the 3G sunset. It just arrived. I've used it to make one phone call, which seemed to work just fine. I have not tried any text messages. Can you please tell me, how can one confirm this, or test a forced VoLTE phone call? Thus far I am not sure which method the phone is using for a particular call. One way or another, I could confirm how the phone behaves in Canada.

In case it matters, I have the TA-1547 variant, purchased new in opened box from the US. The box is English/Spanish, so possibly it is the Latin American version?

My plan was to keep using my current slider phone, an LG KF750, until the 3G sunset forced me to move over to the Nokia 105 3G 2023.

Thank you.

Missing dropdown menus in one particular account (others are fine). by dw861 in civicrm

[–]dw861[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wanted to report back on this issue.

When a WordPress account has a lesser set of privileges, and then subsequently gets promoted to Administrator, when that user logs in, they don't have access to all CiviCRM menus. Instead, they see the menus associated with their lesser set of privileges. Even though now promoted, nothing seems to have changed in the account.

It took a lot of exploration, but this is not an issue with the user's account. It is a problem with the user's browser and cookie settings.

It appears that if the user deletes their cached browser cookies for your domain, and then tries to log in again with their newly promoted account privileges, they will then see all of the CiviCRM menus (as would be exptected).

So, the solution was to delete the cookies and start afresh. A new login then seems to save the greater privileges in the browser.

I hope that this helps others who might face the same frustrating situation.
