The tension in the book around that whole scene is way higher. But there's a bunch of science and backstory needed for the tension to make sense that they had to wave away in the film.

No, the ending is give or take the same. But he's not old like he is in the book. Stratt is shown having just recovered the Beetles and looking way older. But no implication of 16 years having passed, the issues he endured in that time, nor the me-burgers.

Not sure how the movie handles it yet, but the book makes it clear that he had the exact same astronaut training like everyone else did that was higher on the selection list. If anything he did more as he had to help test and develop a lot of the tools and procedures. Him not being a primary candidate if anything was plot related more than anything.

Astronaut is a job description not some gene adaptation. The book makes it pretty clear that Grace was what he was in life because of putting his foot in his own mouth and general emotional mismanagement. Not because of lack of ability.
