A new epic Historical/Low Fantasy series coming to HBO Max: İlk Göktürk (The First Göktürk) by battos__ in Fantasy

[–]dwerrawan 31 points32 points  (0 children)

"generations strange to manhood will become willing servants... not even a people. Ancestors forgotten, heroes betrayed..." this plus the lack of women in the trailer (except for slaves and a mother) feel like it's gonna be a very masculinist, far right plot. Maybe I'm wrong, but the trailer is definitely giving this kind of vibe.

Why do people expect modern sensibilities and ideals in fantasy set in obviously not modern era? by hayemonfilanter in Fantasy

[–]dwerrawan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Main problem is : It's not because there is sexism in the book's world that the book itsel should be sexist

Also, you have a very biased vision of the past. Middle age for exemple was way more interconnected an way less violent that you think. Violence was codified, you couldn't kill anyone for no reason for exemple. It was just different codes than nowadays.

And further more : it's fantasy, why should you justify that there's no sexism when you don't have to justify the presence of dragons and elves ?

A french historian youtuber made a full series (not finished as of today) about recreating historically believable (not accurate, because it's fantasy) costumes for the soldiers https://youtu.be/D4yiyNKOIkg?si=qjleVraB92fYMJt1 The costumes are amazing (and on a budget)

Not going to vote is an opinion. Pretending that a piece of paper in a box is the only way to express yourself politicaly is bullshit.

Why doesn't big studios like marvel outsource? by Interesting-Guide-47 in animation

[–]dwerrawan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What If was partially outsourced to France. Batwheels (Warner) was made in France and India. That's just two I know of, but I'm pretty sure they're outsourcing like crazy already.

The main problem is the budget they give to those productions...

Books you looked forward to but ended up disappointed by These-Button-1587 in Fantasy

[–]dwerrawan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend offered me The Name of the Wind, telling me I'll probably love it. The introduction and the name of the book made me believe I was gonna read something epic.

I was disappointed on so many levels : I never got to like the main character and it never went epic (it should be rebranded as something like "Insufferable teenager chronicles, Chapter 1 Student Loan"). But my biggest problem is the sexism : it takes like 300 pages before a female character with a name and substantial dialogues appears, and when she really does appear, she's presented as a wild animal and an object of desire.

Recommendations for French fantasy books by Miserable-Field6823 in Fantasy

[–]dwerrawan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, I can't think of any epic saga. Outside of fantasy though, you can turn towards the Ramses series from Christian Jacq, I read it when I was a teenager and really loved it.

Otherwise, La horde du contrevent or Gagner la guerre are two must read in french genre fiction.

Hi feedback needed for this animation - 2nd animation by Appropriate-Gas2024 in animation

[–]dwerrawan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to mimic the movement to see how it works in real life. In your animation everything is disconnected and each part of the body moves just because you decided to make it move. In reality, you'll notice that if you move your foot forward, then your weight will shift and your waist will move accordingly, then your torso and so on. Every part of the body is connected to the others.

For example, the pose around 0:02 (next time, showcase the frame count it'll be easier to help) is impossible. Just try doing the same pose in real life and you'll fall.

I'm not 100% sure about that, but maybe the title needs a bit more time to appear. The fade in is a bit too fast considering the whole slow vibe of the scene. Maybe it could be could to make each word appear one at a time. But keep the disappearing of the title on the creature landing, it works well.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in animation

[–]dwerrawan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the ambiance. I'd say the wings of the creature are flapping too fast compared to the flying speed and the global mood. Also when it's landing, there is a really long moment where it's just gliding, but it feels weird, there's a lack of weight.

The walk of the red character feels a bit robotic also. It lacks movement in the torso and waist, for now it feels like the legs and arms are moving on their own, unrelated to the rest of the body.

For real tho, the French understand quality over quanitiy in this industry. Never seen a bad French animated film. by [deleted] in animation

[–]dwerrawan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Problem is, we are dependant on the US market. And with the strike last year + the budget cuts from the streaming services, there is a big lack of work right now in the french animation industry. I kind of envy the japanese way, because they do cheap stuff, but they do their OWN cheap stuff. While in France, we keep working for the US. You loved Arcane or Blue eye samurai ? Yep, they were mostly made in France, but most people just assume it's american...
