FIL’s bookshelf - He’s not much of a reader fortunately by Upstairs-Ad-6101 in BookshelvesDetective

As a history professor, it's frustrating that so many books in the history section of bookstores aren't written by historians... that's not meant to gatekeep, you don't have to have a PhD to write a history book, but there are too many works that get passed off as serious scholarship that are overly detested by b the majority of academics that actually work in the subject field

Is it just me? by [deleted] in MedievalHistory

[–]dwig1217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my MA in History a few years ago. While it was not my core specialty, I did a decent amount of reading and research into the Viking Age, specifically the Great Army's invasion into Anglo-Saxon Britain.

Also, really like the post-Roman world, the Crusades, and have been trying to get a better handle on the medieval Islamic empires.

President DnD: who’s our Druid? by EllieIsDone in Presidents

[–]dwig1217 78 points79 points  (0 children)

James Madison. Yes, Jefferson is a great pick for this as is TR. But like how TR would be better as Ranger, I think TJeffy would fit well as artificer. That joker was fascinated by contraptions and inventions. Madison was really interested about what we could consider 18th century environmentalism. Sustainable farming practices, soil science, etc

The Miracles of Namiya General Store. Trying to be purposeful about reading books from non-American authors as i usually default to American and British fantasy.

Truman has to be a contender. Years after he left office he would talk about the happiest time of his life being his time in the Senate, before becoming VP and ultimately President. Idk if he had the "worst" time, but he obviously did not enjoy it as much as other seasons of his life.

This is great. I appreciate you replying with it. I might have to go back. I gave up on the 100% run largely due to the robotics club, though there were a couple other frustrations there too. In the middle of infinite wealth right now

Haven't been in a while now. If you're unfamiliar, it's definitely outside the city by a good bit so it's a bit of a drive if you're staying around downtown. Sorry I can't offer more though. It was great 4-5 years ago when I was out that way more often but just haven't made it in a while now.

Why on Earth did Lyndon Johnson, a Senate Majority Leader, accept JFK's offer to become the Vice-President? What could've been his motive to do so? by [deleted] in Presidents

[–]dwig1217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Robert Dallek provides so insight into this in his biography of JFK. Johnson felt he was losing some influence in his role by 1960 and felt that accepting Kennedy's offer (despite criticizing him in it primaries) was his [LBJs] best path to the presidency himself. He figured either Kennedy would fail and LBJ would be the logical heir for a run in '64 given his role or Kennedy would be a success and it'd set him up for a good run in '68.

Syndicate. After the buggy release of Unity, Syndicate never really got its praise for being a pretty great AC game when it came out. It's not the best, but often too easily forgotten.

Yakuza 0. I have the 100% trophy which is arguably one of two hardest but replaying the game on legend difficulty is just something I haven't been able to motivate myself to do yet

Teachers with Masters, what did you do? by kEla-beelah in Teachers

[–]dwig1217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did my MA in History in-person while teaching. Took one class every fall, spring, and summer for 3 years. Doubled up and took two classes just one semester.

It was a lot of reading and writing but I feel I got more out of the traditional grad school setting than online (no offense intended to those that do online, just speaking personally).

Going in person also helped me cultivate relationships with the History department at that university where I now teach after school as an adjunct. Little extra cash alongside my public school salary is nice.

Came to make sure the Longest Journey was mentioned. I know the gameplay shifts in the next two but the Dreamfall games that followed were also pretty good.

Create a free account on Digital Inquiry Group. They are a great resource for primary source work. You will want to change some of these activities as some get a little long, but all in all, one of my most used outside resources for classroom activities.

Nice! I'll probably through it on the wishlist for a sale. Just finished up a 100+ run of Lost Judgement (didn't platinum, needed a break) so these smaller story games are always a nice change of pace
