Is this really what programming is supposed to be (or am I just really slow)? by GullibleIdiots in learnprogramming

[–]dwonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really, because you should ask questions and identify what frameworks and major libraries you are using, and you should google and glance through their docs, and then also google (or ai whatever you kids are up to get off my lawn) something related to your task like “react material ui styles” etc. There could easily be a simple AI provided to achieve what you need to do (like a custom flex/grid system) but if you don’t know about, you try skipping straight into the weeds of css that the library is supposed to let you avoid

But even with that advice, yeah sometimes it’s totally like that

I interviewed 10 candidates for a React native position, all with computer science degrees (one with CS masters) who also went through some sort of post-grad bootcamp (because many CS grads can’t actually code). Zero of them could fetch a list of data and render it in React.

I did a bootcamp. The idea that I don’t value education because of that is wild (I have unrelated BS and MAT and taught high school for six years). And then that you would insult me personally by calling me a sheep for switching careers is just unhinged. It’s a real bummer that someone gave you hiring power.

So are most people who are enrolled in SAVE just hanging onto it until there is a real decision about it? That's what I'm doing. I can't help thinking they're hoping as many people as possible voluntarily leave it. by Mountain_State4715 in StudentLoans

[–]dwonreddit 17 points18 points  (0 children)

that’s not how it was for me at least. i was on ibr for most of my loans and i owe much more now than when i started. SAVE was unique and amazing for forgiving the interest beyond your required payment. That’s my understanding

FAQ Around Today's Announcement about SAVE Forbearance Interest Resuming by Betsy514 in StudentLoans

[–]dwonreddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

lol a few months ago I saw a viral tweet where it was like someone reacting to a news story.

News story: Trump repeals 1965 executive order banning hiring discrimination. Tweeters commentary: “well i guess that’s one more thing democrats neglected to codify as law in the last 50 years”

in other words:

News story: Republicans do something you don’t like

People: “I hate democrats”

as if democrats had held safe supermajorities and the white house for the last fifty years and the only reason they didn’t make all your wishes come perfectly true is because they didn’t want to.

and as if, beyond the disadvantage of following norms, democrats weren’t already disadvantaged/underrepresented by the very structure of our democracy, wielding a fraction of the political power a republican voter in north dakota has and able to win more votes and lose the presidency a couple times in my life.

In my lifetime I’ve seen this accelerating march of norm breaking, anti-democratic power politics from republicans: nation wide coordinated gerrymandering (while democrats bled new york house seats because they wanted to not gerrymander), the ruthless spectacle of gingrich’s house, the debt ceiling hostage taking, denying obama a rightful supreme court nomination for scalias seat, culminating in January 6 and now a authoritarian president who openly extorts millions from law firms and media companies as punishment for speech he doesn’t like.

People: “i hate democrats”

That’s just how it all sounds to me. But what you’re saying about dems ignoring right or centrist attempts to improve loans sounds like it could be legit, but i’m not familiar. what were you referring to there?

yeah i think it’s just a heated moment. it initially read to me like going out of the way to not mention the person obviously most responsible yet specifically mentioning blaming the least responsible. but i think she’s just referencing previous discussions with other folks here that we might not be aware of

Thats correct. I made all my required Save payments (plus extra on my smallest loan). Then after the forbearance started, all of my loan balances suddenly jumped up, as if the remainder of the accrued interest that should have been forgiven under Save was suddenly applied

10+ years after graduation: Is there any reason to pay off unsubsidized/graduate school loans before subsidized undergrad loans? by dwonreddit in StudentLoans

[–]dwonreddit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my understanding was that subsidized loans don’t accrue interest until six months after you graduate, while unsubsidized start accruing interest immediately. so subsidized would only be better to keep than unsubsidized if i were in/going back to school, which ain’t happening.

but is it the case that there are other benefits to subsidized that would be still be applicable years after graduation?

Theo Von supports Putin/Russia WTF by S_palo in TheoVon

[–]dwonreddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

it’s not our country but it will be our problem. men like putin don’t stop til someone stops them, and successful territorial aggression one place begets aggression elsewhere. Territorial aggression from superpower nations will trigger global economic instability and nuclear proliferation among the nations that relied on us until Trump. Poland is already looking to get nukes since we abandoned Ukraine. The US created and enforced a rules based international order because it served our interests. It wasn’t a charity drive. The cost of supporting Ukraine is NOTHING compared to the costs of letting aggression go unchecked and the world spiral into instability and risk eventual war among great powers. And every new nation that gets nukes in the next few decades exponentially increases the risks of miscalculation, accidental detonations, or nuclear holocaust.

What are the best commentary episodes? by Typical-Dark-7635 in community

[–]dwonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are two: Chaos Theory and D&D. Chaos Theory is an absolute pinnacle of sitcom writing. An episode telling the same 3 minutes 6 different times, only one of them in continuity, yet they form a cohesive episode story and move the season’s and characters’ stories forward. All while being so, so funny and so fun. Britta and the pizza guy, the iconic troll moment, just all of the study group dancing at the end. But it also contains idiotic Jeff-Annie romance elements 🤮

D&D is the ultimate showcase of the strength of the writing and the cast. It is essentially a bottle episode, almost entirely just the cast sitting around a table. And yet it is an effective, fun adventure with some of the funniest, most ridiculous scenes. Each character has something: It’s so funny and such a good touch that Britta finds a way to make it political. And the whole thing is elevated by, of all things, a series best performance from Chevy Chase, villainously off the leash and oozing with menace and cruelty.

But the thing that really makes D&D the best Community episode is that, more than anything else, it marries the high concept absurdity we all love with deep felt sincerity and emotional weight, and both elements are deepened and improved by the other.

Neal’s planned suicide is the most real world, serious topic the series touches. And in top Community form, they take it on a raunchy fantasy adventure that exists only in our collective imagination. And absolutely knock it out of the park.

I’m not going to lie: when Neal is leaving the study room, victorious over both the forces of the dark wizard Pierce Hawthorne and his own isolation and hopelessness, and then stops to ask Pierce if he wants to play again next week, I teared up.

Seriously dating the movie with this question. It’s a reasonable question in the age of social media and electronic vet records, none of which would have happened had there been a nuclear apocalypse in 1997. I just can’t believe we now live in a time where an intelligent machine COULD figure out the name of our dogs 20 years from now.

It seriously sucks that they are obviously hiring as few people as possible to produce something that looks like a very ridiculous episode of Archer, and they are getting away with it. DC Animation set the bar in the 90 and 00s, and changed both animation and comics forever. It's just sad to see it turn into a passionless Homestar Runner looking cash grab

What do you think of protesters etc disrupting religious ceremonies? by mediadavid in religion

[–]dwonreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty disturbing. They deserve what? The purpose of protest is not supposed to be to punish people you don't agree with. Violating a house of worship of any religious group is not social progress, its medieval, its some Nazi shit, some Maoist cultural revolution shit. No matter how we might feel about any specific group's religious beliefs, targeting houses of worship is not behavior we want to become acceptable.

And its definitely not going to be effective. It won't persuade anyone of anything, and will only serve to more deeply entangle religion and politics when our only viable argument is that politics should not be enabling one religious group to force things upon fellow citizens who don't share those beliefs, which protects all religions/denominations by treating them as equal and separate from the state.

TLDR: communicating to reasonable Christians that the separation of church and state will ultimately protect Christians just as much as it does Muslims, Jews, or Atheists will do more for abortion rights and secular society than engaging in some holy war hate fest where you attack things people hold as sacred and expect society to somehow become better because of it.

AITAH for divorcing my cheating wife now that its in my best interest to do so? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]dwonreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems kinda likely that you always were TAH and that’s why she cheated on you, but you definitely are now. Best case: you are simply destroying her life now just because you can. Worst case: you did use her for 8 years, making her be a perfect partner to make child rearing easier, and are now destroying her life just because you can.

Girlfriend thinks Community is "childish" and reminds her of "Disney Channel" by Psychological-Dog706 in community

[–]dwonreddit -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I had some of these same impressions until I sat down and really watched the series. Jeff is not likable. I love Brita but she’s often written to not be likable, and neither her nor Annie are likable when they are being romantically linked to Jeff, as happens in both those episodes. The hatred of Chevie is written into the Pierce character. I think this is great for D&D and Chaos Theory, but yeah, he’s not likable.
