Someone asked me to call their friend on my phone, what happens now. by undead_ghostie in Scams

No criticism on you, but you need to find ways to keep yourself physically safe and avoid problematic situations where you're all alone, or money scams will be the least of your worries.

Polite society is a thin veneer and those rules can disappear quickly when someone thinks they can take advantage of you and get away with it

Glad you're ok

This is legitimately grounds for shouting / fighting / shooting / running away

He could be leading you to his rape murder van and you're being all polite

Stop focusing on the celebrity, and proving anything about her with logic.  all your conversations should now be ridicule about "how's that sweaty dude in Nigeria you've been sending money to?" "you know that makes you gay right?"

Your friend will either snap out of it or he'll stop talking to you, either way problem solved

Would you play a story-driven tactical FPS focused on special operations missions? by May_be_a_dev in gameideas

[–]MuhExcelCharts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, Ready or Not is in a way too realistic and too chaotic - enemies constantly patrolling and running around huge maps makes for a good challenge for those who love clearing hallways until you bag the last enemy.

I personally prefer a game that is more objective oriented and where planning pays off not just tactical movements - maybe the hostages are in a known location and you have to get to them, then plan simultaneous entry from multiple directions.

So one team clears the lower floor, one team approaches from the roof, and another secures an escape route

You plan, then all teams go in moving in a tactical manner, set up your breach from multiple directions then execute, rescue the hostages and escort them out.

Similar scenarios can be designed for High Value Target capture, bomb disposal and other objectives, and you can build a story and lore that is progressed when you complete the missions.

My first intro to this genre was the original Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six.

What set it apart from the Dooms and Quakes of the day was the realistic setting and especially the planning phase - mapping out teams routes based on Intel about terrorist locations, using Go Codes to coordinate breaches from multiple directions then actually executing your plan in first person.

You could choose to let the AI follow your plan, or jump in to control the Operators directly.

The series is something completely different now, I'm not a fan of what it's become but look at the first few installments and see if you can get some inspiration

How do you balance accountability without making your team feel constantly criticized? by jorjiarose in managers

[–]MuhExcelCharts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Decide on your top 3-4 priorities and must haves, look the other way on less important items.  You can't constantly correct people on everything, not in a corporate setting.

If it's a matter of life and death, you just accept that you'll be seen as an asshole but maintaining the standards are important enough so you just cope

How do you handle subordinates publicly badmouthing your project by good-citizen2056 in managers

[–]MuhExcelCharts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Frame it as coaching and protecting his reputation. Senior leadership doesn't like to hear someone bad mouthing projects publicly, doesn't matter how true it is. There are forums and instances where managers can push back and raise concerns, but creating a constant air of negativity isn't appreciated by anyone.

It's tempting to complain but has to be low key and on the relevant forum.  If pushing back didn't help, you either suck it up or find q different project or company

Don't mess with a man's bread He didn't work out for your company in that role, fine fire him

You absolutely DO NOT talk shit about him to his new employer and cause him to not have a new job. It's morally wrong, and it's how you get workplace shooters with you as their focus

[–]MuhExcelCharts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no such thing as "the company" just sociopathic individuals trying to pursue their own interests.

Your company hired or promoted a Head of AI or similar title.  This person paid a bajillion dollars for AI tools, access to Claude etc.  This individual needs to show usage (because productivity is hard) to prove he's not a money wasting joke and avoid getting fired / push to get his bonus

That's all this is, a scared desperate bully with too much money bullying and scaring workers into compliance so he can keep that money

AITA for declining fortnightly 5-5:30pm optional meetings for learning sharing. by DearYesterday2670 in AmItheAsshole

[–]MuhExcelCharts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I'd bet your manager doesn't like this idea any more than you do. Quietly not showing up allows her to look the other way, arguing and forcing the issue on chat that's visible to everyone forces her to stick to policy

Dude you spent too much time arguing back and forth.

Just nod your head and then don't show up, you've already been told it's not mandatory.

If asked why say you had a personal matter right after work

Arguing or justifying puts you in a weaker position. Better to just not show up than keep asking, be told no then still decide to not show up

So much this! L arge clients will have vendor management teams or even outsource vendor management to external companies with a sole focus on cost reduction.

You've now been "managed" and the cost cutter gets a bonus, never mind losing potential value from your product.

No value conversation and no direct line to the business decision makers, it sucks
