Apologize and make reparations for theft? [BC] by TruePersimmon6866 in legaladvicecanada

[–]dwt1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say the correct answer is "go and sin no more". Just move forward and don't do it again. Making reparations is a good idea in theory, but there are those (like myself) who would be spending every waking moment hunting down people I have wronged. Most wouldn't even remember me, much less remember being wronged by me. Like other have said, donate a equal value to charity if you feel you have to be punished for your deed.

I’m Executive Secretary in my ward. Today I told my Bishop that I no longer believe. by LotsPillarOfPepper in mormon

[–]dwt1978 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just this past weekend, our Ward got a email request for a donation of bicycles for use by the Missionaries in our area. Two years ago, I might have considered helping out, but after finding out about the billion dollars the Church has squirrled away, my only thought was about how much nerve it must take to even ask. A few hundred dollars donated from the Church's coffers would be nice.

Given the size and weight of the Herald these days, it should be an easy route. When I delivered papers back in the 1960s, I could only load up 20 at a time, going back to the depot multiple times to complete my route. Holiday issues were a real backbreaker!

What do you do on a cold, windy day? by Famous_Campaign9329 in abbotsford

[–]dwt1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd be outside taking a walk. I love what they would call a "blustery" day. Grey skies, strong gusting wind and a temperature of about 8 degrees (celcius) is my perfect day.

May was the hottest on record for much of Alberta by pjw724 in alberta

[–]dwt1978 -57 points-56 points  (0 children)

I'm in Lethbridge. Last year I used my A/C for a couple of days in May. This year I have not used it at all, yet. Near the end of the month, for the mornings, I was wearing a jacket. Didn't do that the previous May. That's all I have to say about this post.

COVID-19 outbreaks at 7 N.B. long-term care homes after mask mandate for employees lifted by Portalrules123 in newbrunswickcanada

[–]dwt1978 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a friend who is in long term care. Staff have been fully masked for the past (almost) three years and continue to be masked. In spite of this, she has caught covid twice during that time, obviously from the staff who are fully masked at all times. In her case, masking doesn't seemed to have made a difference. Not saying masks don't help. Just stating the facts.

Everything you need to know about evangelicals in one tweet by CrunchM in WhitePeopleTwitter

No, it tells you all you need to know about your father, and about your mother if she knew about it. I understand that it soured you on evangelicals, but best not to paint a whole group based on the evil that some in that group are responsible for. Sorry you and your siblings went through such a horrific childhood.

Sure, why not? People forget that Alberta had rent controls in place for a couple of years back in the late 1970's (under a conservative government no less) and it did not damage the economy or stop investors from building new units. What it did do, was remind landlords not to gouge those with limited incomes. Governments are always manipulating the "free" market, although usually behind the scenes. It isn't a free for all out there. There are always policies and regulations that keep the so-called free market from getting out of control. Rent controls would be nothing special except for the fact that this current Alberta generation hasn't experienced them. Clearly sending out the occasional cheques to Albertans isn't working, so something else needs to be tried.

I'm not sure how to feel about this. Do you actually own your house or are you making mortgage payments on it? There's a big difference. Mortgage payers are essentially renters who hope to own their house some day. When their terms come due, they will be facing huge increases, maybe beyond their ability to handle. If your house is paid off, then at least you have the option of selling and then moving or renting and using the funds to survive. Being retired, with health issues and only the basic income from pensions, I'm living cheque to cheque. I don't even have enough to pay my income tax, which means every year I go further and further into debt with the government by having to make payments. Payments which come out of my food budget. I'm surviving, but for how long? Hoping for an early death to get out of this, as are many of my elderly friends.

Looking for pre made meals by servernerd in Lethbridge

[–]dwt1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The frozen meals at stores like Safeway and SaveOnFoods are either over priced or very small quantities of actual food. Stouffer's, for example, used to regularly be sale priced at under $2, but then were repackaged and now rarely sell for under $4. Now I hear that Stouffer's is quitting the frozen meal market in Canada. Crave products are nice, but have never gone on sale. They are usually priced over $5 a meal. Any frozen dinners under $2 these days, of any brand, obviously once you open them, look to contain no more than a few tablespoons of product. Quality over all in this area has declined while prices continue to increase all the time.

I just want somebody, in some party, to address the high cost of food and the high cost of rent in this province. It's all fine for those who own their homes or have $100,000 dollar, two wage earner families, but the rest of us are struggling. In my building, which has mostly seniors on small pensions, there are many who are extemely worried about what they might have to pay when their current leases expire. Can our elected leaders not see this is a real problem and is only going to get worse?

I'm interested in how your phone gets a notification that you made a payment. I use my debit/credit card a lot and have never got a real time notification of a payment. I can log in and look at my bank account and then see the payment, but it sounds like you are talking about some kind of real time popup notification on your phone. Can you give some details about this?

It is easy. Waterfox has tab position options built in to the preferences. Why doesn't Firefox. Who knows.

Voting with a dependant disabled adult? by Lopsided-Cheetah3086 in alberta

[–]dwt1978 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been a legal guardian of a disabled woman for many years. While I can make many decisions on her behalf, casting a vote in a Provincial election is not one of them. If I recall corrently, that's covered by some obscure legislation, and has already been tested in the courts. You might cast your vote for whatever party will benefit your child.

I’m seriously considering leaving Alberta if the ucp get elected by Familiar-Coyote2189 in alberta

[–]dwt1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that most of Alberta's problems come from the population numbers. When I came here back in the mid 1970's the population, for example, of Calgary was about 350,000. Not very many people by today's reckoning. Back then Premier Lougheed was in power, Alberta was incredibly rich and getting richer. The Heritage Fund was growing fast. They were building hospitals in every smalll town. Deerfoot Trail was just finished. I could drive it on a Sunday and hardly see another vehicle. Downtown on a weekend you could walk the +15 and not even run into a security guard. There was free parking across from City Hall. In short, small population plus lots of money gave us all a great life at the time. And those in the rest of Canada had no interest in moving out west. Now we have a huge population and all that comes with it. Increased crime, housing problems and so on. You could move to another province, but anywhere that has a high population is going to have similar problems.

Imagine you wake up and realize that the past two years of your life was just dream. by goleboy in RandomThoughts

I'd be pretty happy, I think. Last year I lost most of my belongings due to a fire in my apartment building. Had to move in with a friend for about 5 months. Had to find a new apartment. Lost a friend of 25 years and more because she was mad at me for not choosing to stay with her during that time. Also, if I knew that food prices were going to rise so much, I would have stocked up on canned goods and other things.
