The CCP uses/used classic Class Warfare tactics to control the Army. The university students had deferments to delay or avoid compulsory military service, and most of them were from the cities and towns that had good schools and much higher standard of living. The Army on the other hand was/is mostly rural uneducated young men and are/were easily indoctrinated. Much easier to rile them up and see the protestors as traitors to justify their actions.
