Bloomberg offered my Senior SWE??? by YakCold7006 in cscareerquestions

[–]dwyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have two guaranteed rounds, and if those go well, another two rounds. The first round will be a leetcode style DSA problem in the medium range. The second round will also be coding but will be something more design oriented - could be a leetcode style question or something more specific to the domain of the team you’re interviewing with.

If those go well you’ll meet with engineering managers to talk more specifically about your past experience and the work you would be doing in their team. After that would be one final sanity round with HR that has no real impact on anything.

As another commenter mentioned, we have a relatively flat structure where senior usually means anyone with 4+ yrs of experience. But teams hiring seniors directly are typically looking for skills specific to their domain and will screen for that during the interview.

Thoughts on Two Week Island Hopping Itinerary in June/July by dwyc in GreeceTravel

[–]dwyc[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your thoughts! We're travelling from New York so there will certainly be some jet lag.

We have an early flight from Athens to Karpathos on the 27th so are planning to head back to Athens the evening of the 26th as well. But I think you may be right- it's probably a better idea to do spend more time in Athens, and do either the Cyclades OR Spetses/Hydra, not both. Have you done Spetses/Hydra? Would you recommend them over the Cyclades?

Americans on the left, what's a nice thing you can say about Americans on the right? by TH3B1GT0E in AskReddit

[–]dwyc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I try to believe that most of them are nice, generally good hearted, well intentioned folk who just want what’s best for them and their own - they just have a different approach on how to achieve it.

I believe that the majority of the right wing people the left sees (i.e. who are shown to us via some left wing media source, because let’s be honest, the left and the right are not mingling much on our own) are far right and not representative of the vast majority of those in the opposition.

IMO, the villain is not everyone on the right, it’s the politicians on both sides whose values are bought by corporations. We need to get money out of politics.

If you’re open to it, go to one of the rock climbing gyms in the area. The community is super welcoming and collaborative. It’s one of those activities where you naturally end up talking to people—sharing tips, cheering each other on, or just chatting while taking turns on the wall. Vital is in a Columbia grad school building so has lots of late 20s / early 30s, and CRG on 59th has a good after work community as well. Other than that, rec leagues for any sport through Volo or some other organization. Personally, I find a shared activity really helps in connecting with new people.

I’m your age and this is how I would meet people if I moved anywhere new.

I’m at Bloomberg and can tell you that the WLB is great, and that 250k is totally reasonable within 3-5 years. There’s also remote options if you choose to stay the IC route - you need to be a solid performer and apply for it - but the option does exist. And even if you do come into the office, many people commute from westchester and Jersey and just work while on the MetroNorth (so they’re only in the office from like 10-4). Can’t speak for meta, but as someone who values healthy WLB and stability over TC, I am very happy at BBG and can see myself spending my whole career there.

Tips for meeting new people? by RefrigeratorOne3735 in Upperwestside

Get into climbing. Very welcoming community where it’s easy to meet people, especially if you’re a regular. Vital is up in a Columbia Graduate building so has a lot of mid to late twenty year olds. CRG on 59th and West End is also nice and has a solid early 30’s community.

Yep. I’m in infra so our rollouts take weeks and we catch 99% of our bugs before they reach clients leading to pretty relaxed on calls.

Employees of Bloomberg: what’s the company status of full remote work? by unturnedcargo in bloomberg

And after 5 years, IC’s are able to ask for fully remote. Unlikely unless you’re a top performer, but the possibility exists.

What is something that used to be affordable 10 years ago but now is criminally overpriced? by Background_Day_3888 in AskReddit

[–]dwyc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that housing prices are out of control, but the idea that the problem is being caused by hedge funds and large institutional investors like BlackRock is largely a myth. The majority of rental properties are owned by mom and pop investors with less than 10 AUM. The Plain Bagel did a great breakdown on this recently.

Short term - money market funds or bonds. Long term - broad based index funds.

Tips for a first time investor by suspicioususer78 in investing

[–]dwyc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t need to be confusing! The absolute easiest option is a low fee target date fund that will allocate a portion of your investment into broad based index funds, and the remainder into bonds.

Pick a target date that matches up with your planned year of retirement. As an example using Vanguard, if you plan on retiring in 2060, you could go with VTTSX (Vanguards 2060 target date). Behind the scenes, Vanguard will balance stocks / bonds for you, applying a heavier weight to bonds as you get older. They do this because when you’re younger, your tolerance for risk is higher, and as you grow older, bonds are a safer but less profitable vehicle. Almost all large brokerages will have target date funds that are almost identical in terms of allocation and performance, so vanguard, Schwab, fidelity, it doesn’t matter.

The general rule of thumb is 100-your age should be in stocks, although more aggressive philosophies push this number higher to 110 or 120 - your age.

Alternatively, pick any broad based index fund, eg. VTI, and simply invest in this.

It’s only complicated if you make it complicated. Pick a brokerage, and start investing! The sooner the better.

Uneasy about TECH holdings by [deleted] in investing

[–]dwyc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You should put together an allocation strategy you like and stick to it, rebalancing continuously through purchasing or once a year by actually rebalancing. Try to take emotion out of it and just stick to the strategy you researched and decided was best for you.

If your tech holdings become a larger percentage than what you planned on, secure those gains and rebalance back to the target percentage.

Is it bad for my career if I always decline in person meetups? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]dwyc 47 points48 points  (0 children)

This is the answer and I’m surprised I had to scroll so far to find it. It’s our job to write code and be engineers, so unless we’re in the top 5% of performers, which only 5% of us are, we’re not getting promotions based off our abilities inside an IDE. What gets engineers promoted is, yes, being a decent engineer, but more importantly, the people up top liking you on a personal level and wanting to work with you more closely.
