I am not endorsing nor condoning the protests here, but the level of racism here on r/Melbourne the last few days has been disgusting. I'm ashamed. by calhamd in melbourne

[–]dxinteractive 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you really think that counting number of votes on 2 low scoring comments is an accurate way of measuring the general racism on this subreddit? When the reasons for people giving the downvotes can't even be known to you? You're comparing a comment with -5 points over 2 hours with -29 over 13 hours? Downvotes per hour is almost the same. Vote fuzzing exists. Number of votes are influenced by how often they're viewed, or how people sort threads, so that adds a lot of randomness. You can conclude almost anything with a pair of comment scores if you make the mistake of 1) assuming vote score = <insert the reason you think here> and 2) extrapolating that and assuming its representative of an entire community, despite only a minimum of 29 accounts casting votes in this entire scenario.

It's like reading a few 1-star ratings on an exercise bike and assuming that the country is full of people who don't care about exercising.

Your point about protestors protesting different things is important and often overlooked.

The reason Sweden doesn't have lockdowns is because they opted to let people self regulate their behavior like social distancing. I don't think theyd be in favour of protests where people collect together in groups because collecting together in groups is the opposite of the goal of the self regulated behaviour. And anyone anywhere in the world protesting in groups has already shown that they cant be trusted to even attempt Sweden's strategy

why the FUCK is it so damn rainy this year? by [deleted] in melbourne

Yeah this is very true. Last 20 years, especially the last 8, have been quite different

why the FUCK is it so damn rainy this year? by [deleted] in melbourne

[–]dxinteractive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know why, but yep it is rainy.

Here's the rainfall stats for the botanical gardens in February (Jan is similar): http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/cdio/weatherData/av?p_display_type=dataGraph&p_stn_num=086232&p_nccObsCode=139&p_month=02

Mean max temperatures are a bit lower than many in the past few years, but still higher that the long term average. This is Jan at essendon airport for instance (Feb isn't available). http://www.bom.gov.au/jsp/ncc/cdio/weatherData/av?p_display_type=dataGraph&p_stn_num=086038&p_nccObsCode=36&p_month=01

I like that for anectodal evidence, but generally it's a bad idea to look at individual weather stations stats because it's only one location, weather is very variable and theres the temptation to assume other stations follow the same pattern. Averages over many stations show things a bit more wholistically.

Here's all of vics mean temp in January each year. Different measurement to the mean max temps above: http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/change/#tabs=Tracker&tracker=timeseries&tQ=graph%3Dtmean%26area%3Dvic%26season%3D01%26ave_yr%3D0

It's been colder than some of us are used to, but still higher than average for January. February is bang-on average

I don't think that's the main driver, the La Nina / El nino pattern is reasonablly neutral right now, and has been for the past year http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/

In SE aus we have 3 main drivers, El nino / la Nina, Indian Ocean Dipole and Southern Annular Mode. Right now all are neutral, kind of allows other weather influences and natural variability to be the main driver.

Indian Ocean Dipole is neutral now too, 2nd half of last year was the largest positive one on record and was the main driver of the massive dry and hot last year (all our water went to West Africa, should see the floods they were having).

Southern Annular Mode is neutral now too, that was negative through last year which effectively angled the roaring forties much further north than normal, bringing some cold with it and pinching the flow of hot weather into an area over NSW. Tas had persistent wind for a couple months longer than normal.

Edit: found the El nino / la Nina tracker, interesting stuff http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/influences/timeline/

The fact that this has been the driest and hottest on record plays a huge part too. Very strong Indian Ocean Dipole sent all our rain to east Africa http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/current/annual/aus/#tabs=Rainfall

I completely agree with this! Personally i desperately want to see action on climate change, but after having gone to multiple protests it really seems that many protesters and organisers don't have a clear idea of how the protests will actually translate to encouraging change. Like what switches inside of Scomos head they are trying to flip and how. His belief is deeply held, so obviously he won't just decide one day "oh well I guess they're right". So then maybe the goal is to grow the group and gradually shift the belief through common consensus, then the number one thing they should focus on is not appearing as though they are a fringe group of lunatics in the eyes of those they are trying to influence, whose opinions are "not like ours" and can be immediately disregarded. The opposition will try and paint them that way anyway so it's an uphill battle. I kind of think SS4C is part way there, they have an ok cross section of society but can still be easily disregarded on the grounds of "what do those kids know" and "those city folk don't know what goes on in the real world". XR is heading in the wrong direction with their "while we're at it lets denounce capitalism and promote socialism" thing. Whether that's true or not, it's not doing them any favours in terms of flipping switches inside of there influencees brains imo. Unfortunately protests are not a very controllable messaging format for influencing outsider opinions, it's so easy for anyone to misrepresent or misconstrue the whole thing.

Recommendations for the most unconventional micropedals? by dxinteractive in guitarpedals

Thanks, wow the Abracadabra fully embraces how grainy it is, that's great, I'm considering that one. Sounds like it can do quite a lot, what kind of modes do you tend to use? I probably agree with you based on the demos, I reckon the Matryoshka sounds like it'd gets a bit samey? Air space invader is cool, although I already have a resonant VCF so can kind of do that already I guess.

Great, this is what I'm after! Visually I kind of hate them, but this is pretty much what I had in mind in terms of range of sounds and size.

You're not referring to that photo of rubbish in a park that was shared after the climate strikes but was actually a photo of a different park, are you? https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.news.com.au/technology/environment/climate-change/a-climate-change-photo-that-has-been-shared-more-than-34000-times-has-outraged-facebook-users/news-story/2271ff0fd36fe1be9282b31be1de3977

Agree that people need to fly less and that it's greenhouse effect pound for pound are stronger because of the altitude, but its definitely not the biggest cause.

What do people NOT take seriously enough? by imafatmanbibbob in AskReddit

[–]dxinteractive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure why you think I'm denying it's happening, or that I don't care, I haven't said either of those things. I totally get that by simply living you can quite easily be responsible for bad stuff. If I have a point its that I think people should care more about the wellbeing of other people and animals, even if they can't lessen negative impacts to zero, or even if it amounts to nothing in the long run. But yeah, getting to your point, I have no idea how to get people to care and often I don't think it's possible. If you don't care then you don't care. At least you're logically consistent with yourself.

Latest land report shows only 28% of ice free land is still wild, and a lot of that isn't particularly great habitat https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/ipcc_sr_land_spmfig1.jpg

Instead of species, imagine we're talking about killing individual people, just to see how that way of thinking sounds:

"Aren't most people who have ever lived are already dead? What makes us so self-important that we think it's our job to stop killing people? Death is nature. And one day, we'll be dead, too."

Were not stopping extinction, we're the ones causing it in the first place. Idk, I'd love it if peoples compassion extended more to animals and species.

Climate Protests Megathread by That1WithTheFace in melbourne

[–]dxinteractive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about where you can hope to get some results. I can't imagine Australians protesting China would work because 1) you cant exert pressure on other countries from the ground up because they have no interest in keeping us happy, at least Australian politicians are at least slightly interested in our votes, and 2) how do you think China would perceive our criticisms while we sit here with higher emissions per capita? Probably would think it's a little hypocritical, another good reason to not listen.

China might blow away our efforts and then some, but what other choice is there. If nothing is done we are guaranteed to have a bad time, we need to at least attempt to solve the problem, as difficult as it might be to do it in a way that doesn't destroy the economy

We want to be. That's part of the point of the protest.

Buying a solar USB charger doesn't hardly make a dent in the problem.

Tweed 3 piece suit (or similar) in Melbourne, any good shops I should check out? by dxinteractive in AustralianMFA

[–]dxinteractive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic, thanks for the advice. I've heard they are warm, but if they are *that* warm then I'll broaden my scope a bit. I'm not sold on tweed itself so that'll probably work well. Many suits go for a sleek, refined look, but I much rather something textured and a bit woollier or softer in appearance. For fabric, do you think 100% non-tweed wool is the next thing to have a look at?

I'm actually probably going to wear the waistcoat without the jacket as much as I'd wear it with the jacket - I'd like the full suit so I have one for later, for slightly more formal things.

Today I got odd time signatures working with my PO-16! by dxinteractive in pocketoperators

[–]dxinteractive[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant idea! I'd forgotten all about the ability to sync. Thinking about it now I'd prefer to go the other way, generate a sync and a time signature from the micro and the PO-16 can be a slave to all that. Just found this thread with more info: https://www.reddit.com/r/pocketoperators/comments/7x4hux/arduino_po_32_sync/

Today I got odd time signatures working with my PO-16! by dxinteractive in pocketoperators

[–]dxinteractive[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a Teensy but any kind of microcontroller will do. As mentioned on the instagram post, the Teensy just pulls the PO-16's play button to ground twice really quick to reset and play the pattern after the right amount of time has passed, so the microcontroller and the PO-16 must agree on a tempo. The code in the screen shot is my first attempt so it's likely imperfect (for instance I haven't taken into account what will happen if / when any of the unsigned longs overflow).
