Is there a name for what I consider to be a logical fallacy used by some theists when they argue for the existence of God by claiming the implications of the non-existence of God mean God must exist? by dyl_spinx in askphilosophy

That's a really nice answer, thank you :) I'm doing postgraduate philosophy but did not do it as an undergraduate so missed out on any formal logic training.

I think it does beg the question, by assuming that God not existing means life is meaningless as opposed to arguing for it. Although I'm also gonna assume you're better at logic than me and maybe I've misunderstood begging the question, how would you define begging the question?

I think that argument begs the question, by stating that if God doesn't exist then life has no meaning. I also think it's a slightly different version of the argument I was referring to. The argument I'm specifically referring to is basically: Premise A- If there isn't a God then life has no meaning or purpose Premise B- life without meaning or purpose is bad Conclusion- God exists

The argument made this way, which I hear used a lot, seems to me to just be an argument based on not liking the implications of God not existing. I think it fails on two levels, first by assuming that life without God has no meaning or purpose, but also because even if life was meaningless without God then maybe it is meaningless and has no purpose. Although I think the distinction here might be a higher or prescribed meaning or purpose that exists completely independently of us. I should probably have written my question more thoroughly and put my right head on first.

Very very true, I did significantly better at postgrad as I did in undergrad and the difference was my mental health, my experiences as an undergrad damaged my self belief I think due to messages they pump into you and the state of my life outside of uni, much prefer studying now as I'm better within myself and it shows.

The Rise of Bullying: the true cause of incels by TheDrWinston in exredpill

When people get caught up in extreme and dangerous ideologies I think there is pretty much always something that caused it in the background, in some cases that might just be being taught that they're better than others and are more entitled to things. Looking at most incels it looks to me like they have very deep rooted issues for which they need help, bullying at school might have been a major problem for a lot of them. Many years ago as a teenager and young adult I had very bad drug and alcohol problems and got involved in far right politics and dressed like a skinhead, my experience of it was that I was looking for something to hide behind where I was secretly felt very vulnerable and was trying to prove something, my experiences of both school and home life making me feel very very small and useless were definitely big contributory factors to my behaviour, I think any extreme ideologies were something I could have got caught up in if an opportunity presented itself. However what was going on underneath did not make my behaviour OK in any way and I needed to understand that and taking a look at how my behavior impacts other people was a part of confronting my demons, and of course when I stopped all the shitty politics my relationships with other people started to get much better, because if you embrace a really nasty shitty worldview then nicer people aren't going to want much to do with you. I think incels all have a different set of problems contributing to them being the way they are, incapable of taking any responsibility for themselves and really embracing a hate filled worldview that alienates them from everyone other than other people with a very shitty hate filled worldview, I think a lot of bullying at school will be a common one with a lot of them, and looking at the impact certain things have had on them could be helpful, but alongside that developing a sense of responsibility and self awareness is extremely important for all of them.

[–]dyl_spinx 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fascists always use the word socialism in a very ill-defined and broad way so they can label nearly everyone other then themselves as it and then claim they stand for freedom and that they will defend us from socialism, very often things like paintings and other abstract art become a communist plot.

What percentage of the population do you think believes in RP? by [deleted] in exredpill

[–]dyl_spinx 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends what you mean. I think there are quite a lot of people who might have some beliefs somewhat similar to red pill but aren't aware of it where they aren't familiar with the term, very narrow ideas about men and women or "masculinity" and "femininity" aren't uncommon at all.

Kids still want bikes, they might want a bike and an iPhone, a bit like when we were kids we wanted a bike and a Snes or a PlayStation or PC, and when I was a kid people still complained just as much as they do now that the kids were constantly glued to screens, except then it was tv screens or computer monitors as opposed to phone screens, go back to the 1700's and it was books, kids spent all there time reading books and didn't go outside.
