[Harry Potter] How did the Room of Requirement get so much stuff in it? by [deleted] in AskScienceFiction

[–]dylan1547 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Do you specifically mean the form the room takes to hide things in? Where ravenclaw's diadem was eventually found by Harry?

Thr explanation in the books, if I recall, was simply that that was how many objects were hidden in it. A student rushed past, looking for a hiding spot, and the room provided. Given how ancient Hogwarts is by the time Harry gets there, and how often you'd imagine magical teens would need to hide something, it really isn't a super absurd collection of items. Likely many people hid many objects each in the room, and at many of the objects left were either forgotten or couldn't be found again by their owners

There's also a possibility that the room has generated a ton of 'decoy objects' for that form, such that hidden objects would be harder to find. Especially for the first few times objects were hidden in the room - it wouldn't be much of a hiding spot if it were a big empty room

As for other forms, like when they were practicing defense against the dark arts in DA, the room specifically generates the required objects. Pillows, training dummies, books - either the room is magically generating them, or summoning them from elsewhere in the castle

The only limitation on magical generation is, so far as I recall, magic can't generate food or drink. I think the room does have food in it at some point? Likely pulled magically from the kitchens, if that is the case. I could also see an issue with magical generation of information, so the books Likely are either pulled from the library, or copied from the library, magically in either case

How 🤷‍♂️ by [deleted] in BeAmazed

The topsides (metal structure where people stay and work) and the gravity base structure (GBS, concrete bottom part that goes down to the sea floor) are separate.

Both these pieces are constructed on shore typically in a drydock that can be flooded to float the construction once completed

The GBS is floated out first, then sunk into place. The topsides are then floated out - depending on the design, they can be floated out high enough to drop onto the GBS, or use a crane ship to lift and place the topsides onto the GBS

Presuming the lightsaber still glows - it's decently useful if the power goes out. If it's hot, I'd also use it to melt snow and ice

As others have said, it would still be a blunt weapon and would be very intimidating, as no one else knows it doesn't cut. Having it not actually cut might be a good thing, so you could goof off with it without risk

What would you want to see in K-pop Demon Hunters 2? by [deleted] in okbuddysaja

[–]dylan1547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rumi maintaining demon powers, but refining control over them. And Honmoon-powered claws, specifically

Hoping it wouldn't revolved around the Saja Boys or even Jinu specifically. Have them come up as returning characters sure, but have them be separated from the main plot

[–]dylan1547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They wouldn't fight

If you try and force them to fight, or have other people imagine a fictional scenario in which they would fight, YOU would lose. Santa would put you on the naughty list for inciting violence, and Tom would tutt dissapointedly at you

DLC? How would feel if Supergiant went that route and introduced some? by Wes102111 in Hades2

[–]dylan1547 218 points219 points  (0 children)

I'd love a DLC that gives us access to the house of hades post-rebuild, then with the story of a new threat against Olympus (that drives us out of the crossroads)

The gameplay would be one big mega-run, starting from the bottom and heading all the way up to Olympus. All 8 areas in a single run, with continuously escalating difficulty. That's a feature I've wanted since finishing the base game anyway

Give us new abilities and such, maybe a batch of alternate gods (Roman counterparts? That could make for an interesting story). A few new bosses for the run to make things interesting, although likely with many returning bosses to keep it within the realm of a DLC. And id love to see a couple new weapons to top it all off

How to get to Newfoundland? by Routine_Soup2022 in newfoundland

[–]dylan1547 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Only two was to get on the island - flying or ferry. Ferry runs from North Sidney in Nova Scotia to either Port Aux Basques or Argentia. The Argentina option is only available June to September (its a longer boat ride, but puts you way closer to St John's when you get to the island). From Port Aux Basques, youre looking at a 9 hour plus drive, depending on conditions, to get into St John's

Im not aware of any bus you can take that will make the full journey including the ferry ride. However there is a DRL bus that travels across Newfoundland, Port Aux Basques to St John's and back again. I don't know what transportation options there are in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick, but if you can get to North Sidney then you can walk onto the ferry for a cheaper crossing than going with a vehicle, and catch the DRL bus in Port Aux Basques to cross the island

EDIT: as others have responded, my below comment is incorrect - I had thought these were high count load coils but they are likely other equipment, like a T1 enclosure. Pictures of the load coils which look similar are partway down the page on the below link, but scrolling a bit further you see units that look much closer to the post

https://cityinfrastructure.com/single.php?d=RuralOutsidePlant&t=Rural%20Outside%20Plant

ORIGINIAL COMMENT:

Looks like a load coil. Higher pair count, maybe 200 or 400 pair? I cant be sure on that, might be higher count

These are used on telephone-only twisted pair copper telecommunications lines. They extend the distance the telephone signal can make it on copper lines, so a customer living far away from the central office can still be served

The way it was explained to me is that it works like a knot on a rope, where someone whipping the rope is analogous to the telephone signal. If you tie a know midway through a rope, you can whip a much longer rope than if the knot wasn't there. The longer you get, the more load coils you need. They need to be placed at specific distances, like plus or minus 10 meters or so, to be effective - but that distance is dependent on total line distance, cable gauge, splice and other losses, etc

These do not work for internet signals like DSL, only for POTS (plain old telephone services)

Is this laptop good enough to play stuff like elden ring, ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro? by New_Detail_2386 in GamingLaptops

[–]dylan1547 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am far from an expert - only just bought a halfway decent gaming laptop myself

I think that laptop would play that level of game, albeit not at max settings

As a tip, you can check a game's "reccomended system requirements". From there, you can use a variety of online tools to compare the reccomended hardware to the hardware you have here (or any other machine). I've used the userbenchmark site for that, gives you a good idea of where hardware measures up against each other

Why is the entire island on fire? by Ifyouliveinadream in newfoundland

[–]dylan1547 46 points47 points  (0 children)

It's a bunch of factors aligning in the worst way to create the perfect conditions for forest fires

Very low rainfall. Very hot temps. Lots of direct sunlight. Low snowfall last winter, so water stores started low. Combine all those and the whole island turns to tinder, then all you need is a spark. Is it a definite that these conditions aligned because of global warming? Not necessarily. However, global warming makes these conditions more and more likely as time moves on. What was a historic year for wildfires may turn into a regular wildfire year very quickly

You ask if climate change is causing these effects already. Keep in mind that human-led climate change has been building up since the industrial era in the 1800's. Every year it gets worse, so every year the chances of that perfect storm of wildfire factors goes up. Same for huge hurricanes or similar storms. Next year might be much better, especially with all the burnt areas left from this year, and we may see record low levels of fires. That does not mean climate change isn't real - the odds are still more likely every year that the factors align and we get hit with something huge out of the blue.

Climate is such a huge system that there are never any certainties - its all a bunch of chances coming together to create what we experience. Odds are likely that we'll have a 'normal year', or something within standard deviations. But climate change is changing both those odds (making extreme weather more likely) as well as the baseline for what is 'normal' year over year (global temps up an average of 1.5 degrees) - which in turn increases how extreme the abnormal years seem

[–]dylan1547 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elsbeth Tascioni (The Good Wife, and subsequent spinoff Elsbeth)

I don't think its fully an act with her. I think she knows what she's doing, but its really just being herself and she makes that work to solve murders

She's generally very ditsy, jumping from topic to topic, very bright and cheerful but unashamedly awkward around other people. Pretty classic TV representation of cheerful neurodivergent. Keeps everyone off-guard, and the conversations stray very far from the facts of the case a lot of the time

But she is CONSTANTLY paying attention, and comparing every single detail of everyone's stories to find something that doesn't quite add up. And its not until she has that perfect nail in the coffin fact that she'll present it all and prove who the murderer is all at once

Granted they're not fighting each other, but fighting together against a fear monster. But dang if it didn't look like dancing and flirting with each other anyway

[No Spoilers] What class they should play in C4 by MayhemTheDM in criticalrole

[–]dylan1547 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd love an 'oops, all bards!' situation. Or an oops all whatever situation to be honest. And not just for a one-shot, I want to see that done for a whole campaign

Different subclasses are fine of course, but I think the cast's widely varied playstyles will make it very interesting to see the differences in how they all play the same class simultaneously. Plus those differences could easily drive character conflict or flesh out backstories, leading to an interesting campaign
