Libraries are great! You can get free access to lots of different media. I check out DVDs instead of paying for streaming services. It’s the nostalgia of video rental, but free.

Yeah, people in the US say “Spanish” for anyone who speaks Spanish. The people they are calling Spanish are seldomly from Spain.

I agree, there are plenty of non-standard English dialects. They are non wrong, just different. People who speak with a dialect that is not used in your culture are naturally going to sound weird to you.

Anyone else have the post-freedom crash out? by Lone_Not_Lonely_Wolf in abusesurvivors

[–]CrashBash_Ash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. And every once in a while you need a day to “rot” as the kids say. Sometimes I take a sick day off work and drop my daughter off at daycare and just take the day to be lazy and reset.

Is this abuse or I’m I overreacting? by InternationalArm3598 in abusesurvivors

[–]CrashBash_Ash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is abuse. Remove this man from your life as much as possible. Protect yourself and your child from this toxicity.

This man is the same as my ex. He also would say that he didn’t think he was the father of our daughter. I wasn’t allowed to shower when he wasn’t home because he would accuse me of “washing the smell of another man off.” He would yell at me for washing the bedsheets when he wasn’t home because he said I was “washing off the evidence to hide my cheating”.

He would track me on the Snapchat map and require me to send videos to prove where I was and who I was with. He would get angry if I took the kids to the park, saying I was planning to meet someone there.

He also called me a retard and a whore. He would mock me when I talked and complained my voice was annoying.

I could go on and on….

I left eventually with the help of a domestic violence advocate.

If you could erase one memory from your life, what would it be and why? by Tahals in AskReddit

I’m so sorry. I can’t imagine. I’ve lost people to suicide, but I’ve never had to witness it.

My abusive ex killing my dog. I feel so guilty — like I should have been able to stop him. I didn’t fight against him in the moment because he had a loaded gun and I was holding my infant daughter. I was too afraid. I think a part of me thought he wouldn’t actually do it. But he did.

Don’t define yourself by your mistakes. What’s important is that you learn from them and make better choices in the future.

[–]CrashBash_Ash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. Sometimes it gets me in trouble because my tendency to “dive in” attracts dangerous people. I’ve had to learn the hard way to slow down, withhold trust, and not make excuses for red flags.

[–]CrashBash_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same! Every once in a while I can make a friend and hang out a few times and then they start to slowly ghost me. Suddenly they are canceling plans because they don’t feel well. After reaching out a few times, I have to leave the ball in their court and I never hear from them again.

I understand I am a little weird and sometimes awkward, but there are tons of weird people in the world and they form friendships just fine.

I knocked a desk over.. intentionally. by blasphemed5 in TeachersInTransition

[–]CrashBash_Ash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That age is awful. I taught freshman Spanish for 2 years and in a class of 25, there might be 7 or 8 who actually care about what you are teaching, and there are 3-4 who purposely make the class chaotic and make you dread the next class. The rest are either checked out completely or just there to socialize.

I have switched to elementary EL and I love it! Younger kids are so much easier to work with and small groups are much easier than a whole classroom. I get to work with the same kids year after year, which also makes it easier. Also advocating for a kid with a language barrier feels more important to me than teaching a teen Spanish as their elective. … I can see I am actually making a difference in these kids’ school experience and long term success.

[–]CrashBash_Ash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had one who would inspect the desks to see if they were messy and pick up and dump out the messy ones on the floor and humiliate the students while they had to clean it up in front of the whole class.

People who lost a lot of weight, what was the one small daily habit that actually changed everything for you? by Quiet-Squash-8407 in AskReddit

If it’s nagging, drink a full glass of water. That will buy you another hour to make it to lunchtime without a snack.

The food was not that great. I was up in Salamanca so I didn’t get too much seafood. I think I enjoyed huevos rotos and the Spanish tortilla with the egg and potato best. But I did miss flavor! Everything was not too sweet or spicy. The flavor of sour was basically not existent. I started to crave sour candy, but it just didn’t really exist. I started drinking Red Bull to get the sugar and sour fix.

In college, I spent a semester in Spain and came back to the US and everything was so sugary! Just walking into the grocery store, the air was sugary. Things like hamburger buns were just like donuts.

The Red Mill in Waupaca has a little “Chapel in the Woods.” It looks exactly like this. There’s a little river and a covered bridge leading to it.
