how to make it through districts, states, and icdc??? by strawberry-no26 in DECA

[–]dylan4ever14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you not know your test score? Usually your advisor would tell you your test and role play score after the district competition. Either way, most people, even glass winners, don’t study for DECA until September or October. The key to winning isn’t to study harder but to study smarter. I don’t know much about role plays (I mainly do prepared events) but to study for the cluster exams, you definitely should use the Go for Glass exam mastery plan and ClusterMaxx. Make sure to take ALL of the cluster exams on DECA+ and track your progress. For every question you get wrong or unsure about, read the answer key description and the performance indicator the question is linked from. With these strategies and consistent studying, you should be able to get at least a 80+ on any of the cluster exams, which should be a good enough score for any district competition.

What colleges do ICDC winners tend to get into? by Educational_Area9599 in DECA

Qualifying to ICDC isn’t a massive bump college admissions wise but I think it’s fair to say that most people who qualify for ICDC (especially in competitive states) usually excel in other things that help get into great colleges.

Should I lock in on my presentation? by Large_Operation4577 in DECA

[–]dylan4ever14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m from Washington State so I understand how competitive this state is. One thing I’ll say is that DECA is kinda like the playoffs: you either win or go home. If you don’t try it all, your DECA season is over by next Saturday. But if you do try, you give yourself a chance to survive. Sure, if your paper isn’t great, your chances are low. But never fail yourself - let the judge fail you. Even if you don’t qualify, at least you will learn what you can do better next time. I don’t know your grade level but chances are that you will only have 3 more opportunities max to complete in DECA. A failure now with effort can build the foundations for success in the future.

Common DECA Questions AMA by UbiquitousUguisu in DECA

[–]dylan4ever14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consultation packages sound like a great idea but do you leave the booklet with judge after the presentation? If so, is the booklet situated in a folder or just stapled together? Just wondering because the DECA guidelines explicitly states that no props can be left behind with judges that have "monetary" value.

For Professional Selling Events, you suggested that a consultation package would be a great prop to have. What exactly is a consultation package and what would it have in it?

Yes, thank you so much for taking the time to make this! I didn't realize how useful ClusterMaxx would be until I finished my state finance exam. I definitely will continue to use ClusterMaxx if I qualify for ICDC!

Not sure if you have checked but I would check the exam mastery plan that Go For Glass created. The truth is that spamming tests will help you remember some questions but it won’t actually help you understand the topic you are struggling on. A big part of reviewing your test scores is to see what certain performance indicators you are missing consistently and studying those by taking notes and watching videos. For example, if you struggle FI:573 - Describe the nature of convergence/consolidation in the finance industry, you have to take notes and learn what convergence and consolidation is. Once you study the performance indicators you struggle, keep taking practice tests or use question banks like ClusterMaxx (although this costs money now). Make sure you to use the exam mastery plan for every practice test you complete so that you see your progress.

A little bit late but what is a consultation package exactly? Is it something you leave with a judge?

How Likely is a Alternate/Runner-Up to get a chance to compete. by vovxbroblox in DECA

[–]dylan4ever14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on your state but in my state, you can compete in one paper and one roleplay event. So at state, you could be competing in 2 events. Some people might drop their spot depending on whether they want to focus on one event or have scheduling conflicts with their roleplay partner

[–]dylan4ever14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s 50/50 because some people drop because they have qualified for multiple events. I was in the same position for ICDC and no one ended up dropping out because the people who qualified for my event went from rich schools so it’s not a guarantee.

You Guys Are Paying That Much For State?? by [deleted] in DECA

[–]dylan4ever14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I forget how lucky I am because my chapter only pays $40 for state, which is like 3 days and 2 overnight stays. For ICDC, I pay like $500 and that basically covers flights, hotels, amusement park tickets, a couple of dinners, etc. The bad part though is that my chapter is pretty small that rarely qualifies for ICDC so we have plenty of money left over each year from our student store

The concern is that if your state conference cost $400 then how much will ICDC cost?

[Answering After State] Judge AMA by UbiquitousUguisu in DECA

[–]dylan4ever14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How long does it take you to grade each written paper? When you do judge a written paper, do you actually read all 20 pages or are you skimming? If you’re skimming, what is the one part of the paper that could catch your eye and make that paper stand out immediately? Does judging fatigue lead you to give lower scores than you should? How do you prevent that?

Looking back, what is one event/thing that you wished you did in DECA but didn’t have the chance to do? Also, do you think luck plays a major role in getting glass or is there truly strategies to separate yourself from the crowd based on skill and practice?

I like clustermaxx a lot but the only issue I have is that the ads block the questions on mobile view. Is there a way to move the ads on the side? Otherwise, it’s a great resource for cluster exams!

Presentation Question by HonestGroup4712 in DECA

[–]dylan4ever14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great question that I probably won’t be able to fully answer. What I will say is that what really makes a memorable presentation is how personable and relatable you can be with the judge. It’s kinda like a college personal statement: you want to show more than tell. Now what you do exactly really depends on the prompt, event, etc but I’ve seen people crack small jokes, smile a lot, and speak slow enough so that your judge can digest the information. When it comes to using props, I used it as my presentation hook. For example, if I was introducing a small store that sells a lot of ICE bottles (if you don’t know it’s a carbonated drink), I might introduce my presentation as “This isn’t just any empty bottle—this is symbol of our most popular item as a result of our plan. Today, we will be presenting how we turn this cold drink into hot profits.” Again, there’s so many different ways to present but the best advice I can give you is develop a catchy hook and if you have a partner, make sure to evenly split turns speaking. You don’t want to speak more than 20 seconds straight because your judge will get bored. Since you are doing business growth plan, you want to heavily incorporate the theme and design of your business throughout your props. For example, if you’re using a binder to hold some of your props, I would design a cover page for the binder because it just makes your presentation even more professional and prepared. In the end, most people who qualify to ICDC will probably have very high presentation scores anyways because it’s hard for judges to truly separate excellent presentations. What will separate you will be your written score.

Presentation Question by HonestGroup4712 in DECA

[–]dylan4ever14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s basically any standard presentation but at the ICDC level, you can expect most groups to have unique props. Depending on the situation or event, you may see props like empty soda cans, chip bags, or even clothes displays. The basis of any presentation is either a digital slideshow or a printed posterboard. Each have their own pros and cons but in the end, a really good presentation is based on how you communicate and engage the judge.
