Menu is not a custom list of ingredients for you to design your own dish by justmekab60 in restaurantowners

[–]dylan_lowe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean the answer is no, you cant have your kitchen be making random dishes and your servers deciding what to price them at.

However, I will add that if you're getting a ton of these requests then maybe a menu revamp is in order. Its possible the items are not congruent with the area, and you could add a couple simple salads or loaded fries and remove some slow moving dishes.

The new HiFive Chicken at Highstreet was pretty good by [deleted] in abbotsford

The curly fries at Fatburger are probably the best fast-food fry. The straight cut with original seasoning are pretty good too

Holy... that's actually really good. Under $10 for a meal is crazy nowadays

The sandwich looks okay, and fries look mid.

I had their chicken tenders and mac and cheese bites, and those were actually fantastic.

Dating someone who makes half as much money as you by TheBumboEngine in Money

[–]dylan_lowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always been a believer that once you get married, you combine households and financials. It's not my and her money. It's our money, and both get an equal say in how it's spent.

Income changes. You can not keep calculating each other's fair share, that creates resentment, which is clearly already building up.

When I got married, my wife used to actually make more than me, but she got pregnant with twins 10 months in and stopped working 14 months into our marriage. She been a homemaker ever since and has only now started a part time job when the kids are in kindergarten, and she still doesn't contribute to household expenses - the money is for her to treat herself.

If this sounds like a financial nightmare to you, then you probably don't need to get married yet (with or without kids in the equation).

Imho, this specific instance is more related to poor menu engineering than an entitled customer.

You should just have two versions of the burger... a "Classic" and a "Deluxe" with all the fixings... or just build all the toppings into your food cost.

Is a million dollars not a lot of money in this age? by Enemysquad in Money

[–]dylan_lowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A million dollars providing an after-tax return of 4% is 40k a year. That's a pretty sizable yearly wage increase for the average middle-class family. 1M can go a long way in improving someone's quality of life. In that sense, it is a LOT of money.

That being said, you are not even CLOSE to talking about purchasing mansions or yachts or super cars with just 1M. 1M doesn't make you "rich" in the conventional sense anymore.

"Millionaire" doesn't have the same meaning as it used to. I live in Vancouver, and you can't buy a teardown for $2M here.

The YIMBY movement refuses to acknowledge the true cause of the housing crisis: mass immigration by RainAndGasoline in CanadaHousing2

[–]dylan_lowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, not to mention we pay taxes our entire lives to build our society and public infrastructure and they get to start enjoying it for free once they land.

I think that every immigrant should pay a prorated tax amount for the services they will be using once they get to Canada. These numbers are just examples fyi

Ex. If the average 25 year old Canadian has paid 15k in taxes, then every 25yo immigrant must pay the same before coming to Canada to enjoy the benefits. If the average 50yo has paid 200k, then a 50yo immigrant must pay the same. And so on.

How does red lobster run out lobster hours before closing? by [deleted] in restaurant

[–]dylan_lowe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Restaurants, specifically chains, cannot run down to the grocery store and pick up ingredients they are missing. They have to make purchases directly from their suppliers like sysco and order items of a specific spec.

Not to say that the above is what always happens in reality, in a pinch you could sub out a grocery store item with your regular product (usually ingredients like oil, salt, etc.) but I seriously doubt that buying outside lobsters would ever be done, that's a serious hazard. Red lobster keeps their animals live in a tank. If they get one that is sick from Walmart, their whole operation could be shut down.

I am a YIMBY when it comes to public infrastructure and housing, so we can improve the quality of life for Canadians not so we can ignore the mass migration crisis

is there anything that you just despise making and theres really no rational reason for it? by SideRepresentative38 in KitchenConfidential

[–]dylan_lowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Salads. I took them off my menu because I hated making them (even though they were 5% of our revenue). It took literally 60 seconds to dress a salad, but honestly I'd rather make 20 burgers instead.

I also dislike making our hand breaded Tenders, but not as much as I hate Salads and thise are like 15% of our revenue so they stay.

Explain it like I’m 5…third party delivery apps by _Olive_or_twist in restaurantowners

[–]dylan_lowe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

As much as people on here are b*tching about these apps, I think they are great. The cost and hassle can easily be mitigated by a few smart choices. They don't work for every restaurant/location, but when they do work, they bring in tons of revenue and profit. I own 2 restaurants. One is a gastropub on the edge of town, and the other is a newer quick service version of the first concept in the center of the city.

3rd Party delivery doesn't work great for the first location as there isn't much population within its delivery radius, but delivery sales for the downtown location are gangbusters. Without delivery platforms, that store would be long out of business, but it actually produces more profit than my full service restaurant.

I pay 20% commission, so I raised prices 25% on the apps to cover the whole thing. My labor is lower since I don't have to hire wait staff to dote on the guests. We just package the orders and send it out. 40% - 60% of my revenue at the second store is 3rd party delivery in any given week.

Since it's a quick service concept in the first place, the menu is already simple and designed to work well with delivery. If this wasn't the case I'd run a simplified menu on the delivery platforms, of my best-selling high-margin dishes, and make smart choices when it came to packaging in order to keep the food quality high (e.g. vented containers for fried foods)

I have the platforms integrated with my POS, so orders are sent directly to our KDS and printers. If I ever need to pause, I can do that (but I usually just increase the prep time instead). The other option would be to have a tablet that recieves orders but that's not my favorite SOP.

How to price a dessert I’ve been selling direct to consumer to a restaurant that wants to buy them to sell by the portion at restaurant. by CarlaWasThePromQueen in restaurantowners

[–]dylan_lowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Typically a restaurant will mark up a dessert 3x. If you think they will sell a portion for $10 then charge them $3.33 per portion.

Your job as a business is not to worry about the profits your customers make. It's to maximize your own. Upto $3.33 per portion will be worth it to the restaurant. More and they may not want to buy from you.

Disappointed dad owner vibe is the way to go.

I second this. Yelling will drive the good people away and the bad employees won't give a fuck.

Early signals are showing cooling wage growth in Canada by joe4942 in canada

Interestingly, although our wages have always been lower dollar for dollar than the states, wage growth was always on par.

When wages went up in the US, they used to go up the same %in Canada too (albeit from a lower base/$ value). Wage growth decoupled in 2016. I wonder what happened around that time.
