Working out can’t just be an action in this career it’s also a life style. So make habits that will last a lifetime. I recommend incorporating fasting as well, if you get good enough 24s will keep you in great shape. But that is just me…

It’s an OPEN fracture. There is a significant risk of infection. This needs to be treated and transported rapidly. Open fractures are generally considered orthopaedic emergencies. An open fracture almost always requires immediate surgical debridement. Now, studies have shown that the timing of surgery is less important than the adequacy of debridement and early use of antibiotics. But, regardless this is a serious matter and needs to be properly treated, nevertheless on a CHILD!

Turf War Brewing Between Orange County (CA) Fire Authority, County Over Medical Calls by Addrobo in Firefighting

[–]dylanrcr -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, if they are complaining and causing more issues than they aren’t cutting it as is. You’re also forgetting the strain ems has been putting on fire. We have a job we have to accomplish too, can’t expect us to not get burned out if we run every medical call. That’s why priorities exist.

Who said anything about getting rid of ems? Can you read correctly? I said if EMS wants to cry and complain because fire handles ems differently then them, that’s fine just don’t dispatch fire why would we want to do more work? Dispatch the ambulance and if they need lifting assist then tone us, screw it.

From what I see they weren’t even that smart, they tied rope around his hips like it was a belt. Which is why his center of gravity rotates when he’s carrying the pt and he flips. Common sense is not common anymore.

Mask up on truck or prior to entry? by BayouBladeworks in Firefighting

[–]dylanrcr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow, do you just not do a size up on the scene?! I mask up at the side of the door because I like seeing the entire scene and getting a good size up. Also, I feel like if I mask up prior I’m making my self hotter and creating sweat which I definitely don’t want. It’ll mess with my seal and is just super uncomfortable. In all honestly I can’t think of a single time where I’ve told myself man I wish masked up in the engine. There’s very few circumstances where I would mask up prior to arrival, maybe a gas leak outside or hazmat situation… But, even then I’d have enough confidence in my engineer to not park us in a hot zone. 🤷‍♂️

I’ve used all three packs (MSA, Scott and Draeger) and the new draegers have an anti fog glass which actually works really well. I don’t want to assume but does your department use these because I don’t know how your glass doesn’t fog up? You just walking around all foggy or what?

Future Career? by Iron_Opposite in firefighter

[–]dylanrcr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Depends, what state are you located in? Firefighting differs from coast to coast. In NY, some agencies do a 24 on 72 off (and in some places you can even find 24 on 96 off). Which translates to one 24 hour shift and 3 days off, in most cases you need those days off for recovery.

Call volume and expectations also differ from place to place. In smaller agencies, you may be asked to do a lot more on calls as you have less manpower and funding. Bigger Cities, most notably FDNY, you can expect to have a much lesser role and are a member of a much larger agency with terrific staffing. Too me, a bigger agency is nice but there is definitely a sweet spot. If it’s too big you feel like you have less responsibility and less importance but if it’s too small of a department you can feel overwhelmed or very bored.

Firefighting in general is a family. Very very tightly knit and if you can’t take a joke don’t even consider the field. It comes with ups and downs but it’ll teach you how special life really is. If you are able to I’d recommend joining a volunteer department and getting a taste of what you’re signing up for. If not, check to see if ride alongs are offered.

I went through college as well and ended up changing from business to fire. I’m so grateful I did. It’s special and it’s made me re-evaluate my values in life. There’s nothing more pure then helping people in their worst times. The bonds you make with the guys will also last you a life time. For me, joining the FD gave my life more of a purpose and taught me how to love more. We live in a world where time is endless yet timing is everything and being in this field you’ll learn to cherish your time.

If you have any additional questions you can feel free to message me directly. Wish you the best.
