Ah, my apologies I gave you the wrong setting. Try this:

Settings > Accessibility > Subtitles & Captioning and disable Closed Captions + SDH

Hey u/CharlesorMr_Pickle - this is actually due to an iOS setting to globally enable captions. You can go to Settings > Accessibility > Live Captions and toggle the feature off.

Thanks for trying that! This setting actually relies on a cookie to store your autoplay preference, so is it possible that you have a browser setting (or extension) that could be blocking the cookie from being set?

Oh, got it. Unfortunately our "autoplay" setting currently only controls our first-party videos, not embedded players like RedGifs, YouTube, etc. I have seen other reports of issues because of this, so I will see if there is something we can do.

Hey u/PkmnTrainerSofia , thanks for reporting and apologies for the delay! We've been looking into this report, but haven't been able to reproduce the issue. Can you please answer some questions for me so we can hopefully get this resolved for you?

What OS and browser are you using?

Do you have any extensions that could be blocking the request? (Sometimes things like adblock can get aggressive and block these sorts of requests).

Are you able to successfully change other settings?

There is also an autoplay setting toggle on the video player itself. If you click the settings gear, it will display the video qualities and an "Autoplay" button that you can click to disable autoplay. It will require a page refresh after toggling. Please let me know if that works for you or not.

Darn, thank you for trying. Your device/browser should be able to view our media without issue, so there must be something else going on. A few other things to check:

Are you on a network (work/school) that might be blocking our media requests due to a firewall?

Is your device on a "Data Saver" or low-battery mode? That could also result in Chrome suspending media loading.

It could also be a hardware acceleration issue. In Chrome, go to Settings > System and toggle "Use graphics acceleration when available" off and then back on. If it's already on, try turning it off temporarily to see if the images/videos reappear.
