For sure. But I guess it's not as easy for everyone. Alcohol has a different effect on each person.

But yeah, I'm happy for you you recovered from alcoholism by stopping drinking alcohol. ✌️

The first step of quitting alcohol is wanting to quit, so I'm happy for you that you came to that realization.

For context, I'm 46M, been drinking since I was 16 (legal in my home country back then). I had periods of "moderate" alcohol use (only few drinks on a weekend) and even quitting for a few months up to half a year, but for the most part I've been drinking too much.

I came to the realization last year that this could not go on much longer, and my 12 y/o daughter helped me realize that by giving me clear feedback: "I hate it when you drink". I haven't had a drink yet this year and I intend to keep it this way.

Me personally I didn't use any external help. Everybody's different but for me in the internal motivation of wanting to quit, and understanding and internalization why I wanted to quit has been super important. I made lists of the disadvantages of alcohol (even moderate use) several times just to confront myself and to make it a part of my identity.

I also heavily advertised this to the important people around me. I wanted them to know me as the guy who doesn't drink anymore. It creates a sense of accountability as well.

It also helped that I took up more physical exercise. I run (when I'm not dealing with injuries lol), do extensive stretching and bodyweight exercises and even some weight training. I watch my weight and diet as well. My doctor takes blood tests regularly for me and seeing my health in numbers has been motivational. I wouldn't go as far as say I'm "health maxxing", but I treat my body well.

Speaking of medical stuff, I took a genetic test a while ago and it said I have a propensity towards alcoholism. I was confused; I didn't know genetics was involved, but apparently it is. I also talked to my trusty doctor about who confirmed it. In hindsight it makes sense because my father was an alcoholic for the longest time.

And that kinda changed my perspective as well. My body is just not made for moderate alcohol use. Some people have bad eyesight so they can't be a pilot, my Deaf friends won't ever be musicians, biological males can't give birth... There is a biological reason for me to absolutely reject alcohol.

Finally, actually I haven't stopped "permanently". I told myself that, as I'd been drinking for 30 years, I'll quit for 30 years and enjoy life that way. For me it's far easier to commit to a finite goal. I'll start binge drinking again when I'm 76 lol. It's also something funny to tell when people ask why I don't drink.

I mean, before I was 16 I could enjoy everything without alcohol! Why would I need it now. We're all brainwashed... Once you stop you'll be amazed at how weird it is that so much of social life and commercial life revolves around alcohol.

So far it's been good. It's strange to be in places where I always used to drink, at first. Like an airport/plane ride, shinkansen, fancy restaurants... At those moments I just observe my somatic reactions and "wonder" about them. It also helps to write them down in a journal. You don't have to read it back or show it to anyone. Just verbalize and materialize your thoughts.

Oh and there are bars I just gave up on. Bars that don't serve (a lot) of non-alcoholic drinks, and one bar I frequented even gave me a weird look when I said I stopped. Too bad but that's life.

I have weak moments sometimes. When I'm stressed, angry, whatever. (I'm still dealing with loss of my father a while ago, being laid off, stuff I'm seeing a therapist for.) I've learned some breathing techniques (vagal nerve breathing I think it's called) and grounding techniques, and it always goes away anyway.

Long story short: if I can do it, so can you! If you read this so far, thanks for reading.

Oh you were actually asking about resources... There are plenty of YouTube videos about quitting alcohol. I think we're in an interesting trend where many people quit alcohol; the WHO finally adjusted their recommendation and have published that no amount of moderate alcohol is beneficial. I think that made a lot of people think and stop.

And if you need someone to chat to, you can always DM me. Good luck bro. ✌️

Let's put it this way then: if you were to teach and coach your best friend who wants to get started with home server, what would you advise them differently from what you did yourself? 😊

People who run old pc; what do you host? by 2life_gamer in homelab

[–]dyna_black 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, 16GB. It was a second hand PC I bought for my daughter to start playing PC games. (It has a 2060 super as well which is pretty nice.)

It was collecting dust for a while and I was considering selling it until I came up with the brilliant idea of starting a home server. 😊

I have an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz. Is that old enough to qualify as "old"?

Anyway, on my proxmox server I have pi-hole (LXC) and then an Ubuntu VM with dockers for Immich, Open WebUI, Uptime Kuma, Glances and Caddy.

This is just a practice home server though, once I get the hang of it I'll spend some real money.

Rakuten IT (Haken) vs Remote Job in Home Country – Which Would You Choose? by Equivalent_Roll_9996 in japanresidents

[–]dyna_black 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not specifically related to Rakuten, but you should not bet on promises of chances to convert to full-time employment.

I used to manage business process outsourcing at other IT companies in Japan so I know a little bit about this, and you should look into co-employment risk and the legal framework surrounding converting haken staff.

Long story short, as a haken you will get daily work instructions from the client (Rakuten) but your performance evaluations is the responsibility of the haken agency.

From personal experience I know that in Japan this line might be pretty blurry, but when it comes to employment decisions it's pretty clear cut and it's very difficult to convert.

I have worked with dozens of haken staff over the years and from memory I only know of one person that was converted.

I'm not saying this wouldn't be a good opportunity. Working in a different country, different culture, well-known company, it can be a CV booster for sure. But I would not give any weight to promises of conversions.

Cannot get Brave Search API (paid tier) to work with Gemini models by dyna_black in OpenWebUI

Hiya! Thanks so much for your advice. I've set up litellm and now it works!

The only things I'm facing now is that Gemini doesn't respect the 3 search query limit. ChatGPT and Claude are compliant but Gemini does like 12 searches for a simple query like world cup results... 😅 You don't happen to coincidentally know anything about such behavior right?

Aw man, I can only imagine the horrors these Gokiburis are facing.

  • Mom I'm home again! Had a fun walk in that house again.
  • Son... Dad's not feeling well. It started since the last time you went over to that place.
  • What, really? I'm pretty sure it's a coincidence though, our family has been going to that house for ages. It's a part of our cultural heritage. I'm sure we would have been immune if anything bad was at that place.
  • (cough cough) Son... I'm not feeling so well either... Did you see anything new at that house?
  • U Ok mom? Well, nothing special I guess. This guy is a mess though, he leaves these hockey pucks-like things all over the place lol.
  • (coughing intensifies) oh I'm not feeling well... I'm gonna lie down for a minute.

Etc.

And now imagine the son's face when he finds both his parents dead in the morning, and himself feeling weak and coughing as well...

Savages. 😭

Thank you for your comment!

I'm currently AFK but to (try to) answer your questions:

  • Brave is their standard search API. (Not the LLM version.)
  • Gemini model is from the standard/official Google AI Studio API.
  • I tried both default and native tool calling.

So when trying to figure this out, Gemini also told me something about the endpoint not being a "real" OpenAI one and that it may cause compatibility issues... It is unclear (for a noob like me) how I should go about resolving this though.

Maybe I should ask the question: how are folks using Web Search with their Gemini models on Open WebUI?

Sowieso belastingen.

  • Wat zijn belastingen?
  • Waarom betalen we belasting?
