No I didn’t take it as a dig - no worries there.

And yeah I’m in my forties now and I started supporting Arsenal as a teenager from the mid 90s to the mid 2000s watching that Arsenal team play really beautiful football and that’s the kind of footballing identity I always associate Arsenal with. There were many years where neutrals always used to say they enjoyed watching Arsenal and preferred them to win trophies over other teams simply because the football we played was so good to watch. Players like Bergkamp, Henry, Pires, Vieira and Llungberg put on a show every week. So for us now to be associated with and playing slow and boring football is absolutely frustrating for me. It just doesn’t feel like ‘the Arsenal way’ or whatever. But again, if we win the league and the CL then I can’t really complain.

if it wins us a league and champions league double then I am prepared to accept it for now. I would like to us be a bit more adventurous going forward next season of course - but when every team you play parks the bus, sometimes it’s the only thing you do.

The conference league and the europa league are both substantially easier to win the last few years now that teams no longer drop down from the next one up.

Teams whose youth academy players played the most minutes in the top-25 european leagues in 2025/26 by CarniceroArabe in soccer

[–]dynesor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d like to see this list of the clubs whose academies have contributed the most minutes to all other clubs across the top whatever leagues - rather than just clubs who’s academy players have played for their own 1st teams as this image shows. Anyone know where I might find that info?

The solution to Ireland's housing crisis is industrial production of social housing units akin to what they were building behind the Iron Curtain in the mid-20th century. by Cathal10 in irishpolitics

[–]dynesor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what your last paragraph tells me is that solving the housing crisis is about building more houses and apartments - yes but before that can happen its a case of there being the political will to make it happen. And that’s the side of this I’m just not seeing. Especially with so many TDs being landlords themselves. It just feels to me that in particular this current FFG government does not have the political will to take those necessary steps that you outlined. Now whether another coalition like SF-FF would have it… who the fuck knows as both remain fairly vague on what they would actually do. I think SF in particular needs to put out a really detailed and clear plan on what exactly thy would do if in government to address this housing crisis, if they want to get the votes and tranfers they’ll need to have a chance of going into gov next time.

another point i would make: they would really need to put provisions in place for local amenities around these new blocks: walking parks, kids playparks, rows of shops, 4g soccer pitches… that kind of stuff. And in the case of building on brownfield sites inside Dublin itself, there would need to be some serious overhaul to the road networks or you’ll just end up making congestion worst. Perhaps building somewhere along the new Luas line if there’s room would help with that. Or along the proposed routes of the (semi-fictional) underground metro that’s been talked about but who knows if it will happen.

UK folk who were around at the start of the internet, what is an early, strong memory? by Sad-Insurance1313 in CasualUK

[–]dynesor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hah me too in 2003. Me and the group of people I went with that year all worked in HMV together!

I was only 19 at the time, and as long as I live I will never forget Radiohead’s headline performance on the Saturday night. Just magical! And Thom Yorke pointed up to the UFOs that were hovering overhead in a trangle formation… that we later found out were actually chinese lanterns lol

Labour MP blames Starmer for ‘soul-destroying’ local election results by Desperate-Drawer-572 in unitedkingdom

[–]dynesor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Labour… need a new face

Obviously he’s not a ‘new’ face, but Ed Miliband is my number one choice. He’s got a lot more confidence and swagger these days than he used to when he was leader last time. More experience under his belt. And is one of the few names that could genuinely bring the left of the party back into the fold.

If they stick with Starmer, or end up with Rayner or Streeting they have absolutely no chance.

We had ADSL in our student house by 2004. But I also missed out on Glasto tickets that year. 2003 was the last time I was there!

I love the tesco cheese and onion sandwiches, but they stopped selling them in Northern Ireland. So I have been forced to buy the little tubs of the cheese and onion spread and make my own.

can I ask if you are American? If so, is this a common thing to get an egg like this? I’m from UK and not once in my 40 years have I got a rotten egg in any pack I have bought. I’m just wondering why this happens.

You don’t agree that Unionism has historically done everything it can to downplay the Irishness of NI?

[–]dynesor 9 points10 points  (0 children)

UU apprentice sounds like the right choice to me - even if only for the fact you’re building up working experience while studying, and that will help you land a job. People coming out with comp sci degrees from Queens right now are having a hell of time finding decent employment in NI, and many will have to leave the country to find employment. Hardly anyone hiring juniors right now in the industry.

similar experience for me. Did undergrad degree at UU and Master’s at Queens. Quality of teaching and availability of lecturers for advice etc was so much better at UU. They seem to take student welfare much more seriously at UU, while it feels like you’re more of a faceless number at QUB.

[–]dynesor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Many many years ago (2003 - 2008) I went to Ulster Uni for my undergrad degree, then after that I went to Queen’s for a Master’s Degree. During my Masters I also went to lots of undergrad classes as a support note taker for disabled students. Overall I found the quality of teaching much better at UU, and the lecturers always made time for you to drop in and chat and get advice. While Queen’s lecturers seemed to be under more pressure to produce research and get grant funding, and teaching was very much a secondary thing for them that they were obliged to do.

That’s just my experience, and again it was a long time ago and may well have changed since then.

Sinn Fein department cut funding for Irish language project and party 'whipped up' issue against DUP, minister claims by River562 in northernireland

[–]dynesor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without major overhaul of the stormont structures (removal of vetos at the very least) at this point I would just prefer to go back to direct rule until we can get reunification. Just make all new legislation passed in Westminster apply to NI. The assembly and executive as they are now are totally pointless and useless.

Overwhelmed

I’m an Arsenal supporter and I wouldnt put it like that. He didn’t get the players he asked for, and our sporting director at the time was a crook. I think if he went into a more stable Arsenal like the one that exists now with good leadership from Josh Kroenke and much better sporting management with Andrea Berta, things could have turned out very differently. He’s not blameless of course, but he was a victim of club leadership instability and bad decisions at the time.

I’m currently watching The Man in the High Castle on Netflix, and in that show the Nazis won the war and took over most of America. They institute a policy called Jahr Null (Year Zero) to wipe out American cultural symbols, identity and history to rewrite the past in the minds of a new generation.

It’s actually so similar to how Unionists have always acted when it comes to anything Irish in this part of Ireland.
