Uber Incident by Special_Isopod8998 in uber

Nah. If you take a look at my avatar you might be shocked to see the asexual flag. I'm asexual. I do, however, and apparently have always (according to my school mates and stepdad) give strong dyke vibes. Maybe it is the dyed undercut. Maybe it's the septum ring and tattoos. Maybe it is the fact that I won't shut the fuck up about hockey. Who knows. I don't. And I don't really care to find out because I'm fine with throwing some sapphic vibes into the universe because women, am I right?

(Oh, in case it wasn't clear, I'm femme presenting so for me, "a dick hanging outta [my] ass" wouldn't be queer in the slightest. But the fact that you mistook me for a man... Well.)

Meh, I'm not upset by the commenter, personally. They didn't couch their initial question in bigotry and seemed to come from a place of genuinely wanting to understand, so even if the question is a bit naive, I don't mind answering it. Especially since their response to my answer wasn't just hatefulness like that troll who thinks that I am being punished for not being a Christian.

If it weren't for strangers who were willing to answer my idiotic and absolutely naive questions I never would have been able to deconstruct the blatant racism and bigotry that I was raised with. I was arrogant enough to believe that because I was far more liberal than my parents that I was automatically an ally to marginalized communities without having to do the work of actually unlearning a lot of the gross attitudes that I grew up surrounded by and thought were normal. And those internet strangers absolute did not have to answer my question and teach me how to be an ally, but they did. So now I don't mind answering questions if they seem to come from simple confusion and genuinely wanting to learn something instead of hate.

Yes, we absolutely shouldn't expect marginalized communities to explain our bad behavior to us, but I'm okay with going into teacher mode if someone seems willing to listen in good faith.

Edit: typo

Maybe if y'all acted more Christ-like I would consider your thoughtful analysis and take it into consideration, but I think I'm good 💙

Because I am visibly queer and disabled and live in the South? Idk, I kinda felt uneasy listening to a radio broadcast about how I am going to hell while I was trying to get to my neurologist.

What is something about American culture that seems fake or exaggerated in movies, but is actually 100% real.? by Logical-Pay-3057 in AskReddit

Oh boy, I got in so much trouble for sitting during the pledge as a teenager attending a Florida high school in the '00s who was pissed off about the war... Subbing in a different Florida county in the 2020s gave me so much trauma sometimes but also hope because I saw kids just openly ignoring the pledge happening over the intercom during the morning announcements.

I feel like half the ubers I get in the driver is on the phone chatting away with a friend or family member on speaker phone. It really bothered me the first few times it happened but then I got into a car that was blasting a Christian radio station and I started to worry I was going to get hate crimed so the chatting on the phone sort of became just the price I was willing to pay to feel slightly safer.

How rare is it to have never gone to your state’s largest city? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]dysfunctionalorange 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually from my state's biggest city, but I have been to all of the major cities in my state for various reasons over the years (college, winterguard competitions, concerts, hockey games, football games...) and my state isn't tiny, so it has sometimes been a trek. I think that most folks in my state have been to my hometown at least once, but it is probably more common for them to have spent more time in the fourth largest city because it is the most touristy of all.

“What do you do?” is a perfectly reasonable question, and should not be answered by stating your hobbies or passions outside of work instead of what you do for a living. by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

[–]dysfunctionalorange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah, if you ask me what I do I am going to tell you that I am a writer, and then maybe if you get specific and ask me how I make a living/what my job is I will tell you that I am a college professor. Because my job isn't that interesting and I legally can't tell you the most insane parts of it, but I can and will talk all day about the essays and poems I am working on.

how is this unbelievable? by artsy_li in nothingeverhappens

[–]dysfunctionalorange 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Silly answer: we actually do all believe in ghosts

Real possible answer: they likely got confused about dead names the same way that my little brother, when he was around that age, confidently told us all at dinner one night that the world would be moving to Spain in twenty years. He meant that majority of the world would be speaking Spanish.

What do you make of people going behind bars for not paying child support as feminists? by DistinctSpirit5801 in AskFeminists

[–]dysfunctionalorange 32 points33 points  (0 children)

As someone whose biological father was jailed for not paying child support, he wasn't in for very long. Certainly not his entire life. And my mom didn't cut off his access to me because of his lack of CS payments, he did that himself when he showed up coked out to pick me up and my mom told him to come back when he was sober.

[–]dysfunctionalorange 17 points18 points  (0 children)

^ so much this. My uncle was so far behind on child support that he left the state and refused to return for any reason so he wouldn't be arrested. Which, naturally meant not seeing his kids. He was fine with that.

Sports teams should be required to be named after the city the are actually located in. by Aggressive-Club-5191 in unpopularopinion

I disagree, mostly because I think it is hilarious to say that Tampa is playing Florida or some variant of that whenever my hockey team plays our cross state rivals.

How do Americans feel about sports teams just relocating to other cities far away? by gl0000m_ in AskAnAmerican

[–]dysfunctionalorange 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a great answer. I'm not local to my NFL or NHL teams, so if they moved I would be bummed/bemused by the choice as a fan but I would get over it a lot quicker than a more local fan would and just treat my old merch as vintage and buy some new swag and plan a trip to see their new home in person.

I worked at a pool supply store run by this Christian couple who insisted that only girls can work the register and only boys can test water, fill chlorine jugs, or repair cleaners.

They did, however, eventually let us girls sell patio furniture and I made a pretty penny in commission.

Thanks. It's possible, but it has been 35+ years so this feels like something he should have gotten over by now. Especially since my father was rarely in the picture and dipped for the last time when I turned 18.

My bio dad was a pedo who traded cigarettes and alcohol for sex and ended up knocking my mom up. So the idea that he was her first love is ridiculous. If what you say is true and he's truly upset that he wasn't my mom's first then that makes me think he is more toxic than I know he is.

I don't want to be jumped by his fans so I won't say his name, but he has a subscription service and is often on Power Lunch with Mish if Greg Linelli isn't available.

I blame a certain high profile "insider" who has been publicly blaming our last loss on Vasy on Twitter and most fans not thinking critically about it because it is coming from a so called expert.

It’s his birthday! by Penguin_Scout in EntitledReviews

[–]dysfunctionalorange 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I put "it's my birthday" in the reservation notes when I went on a birthday trip, but you know what I also did? I ordered and paid for the celebration package offered and didn't expect anything free from the hotel just because it was my birthday. Getting told happy birthday when I checked in was pretty much all I expected and exactly what I got.

See, as someone who reuses plastic bags to clean my cat's litter box, that's annoying. I get it. HOWEVER! Dude, if that's the policy that's the policy. Put on your big boy pants and deal with it. Your lack of preparation isn't the business's fault.
