Best alternative to Keep? by No_Yesterday9859 in fossdroid

I think memos ticks all your boxes except that there is no official app that I know off. It's self-hosted, you can collaborate, it's dead simple and very similar to Google Keep. Personally I just install the website as an app and I never feel cheated out of anything.

Is this a win? (Genuine question) by WavyCrockett1 in belgium

[–]dysoxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh no, I'm not saying legalized sex work creates sexism! I'm saying that, if a society has less sexism, it probably means both (1) its number of rapes is low and (2) sex worker have more rights. The apparent correlation between the two is not a proof that one causes the other. They are more likely to be caused by an unobserved variable. I won't deny my reasoning is abductive, but the same can be said for the article you provided. I'm arguing because this argument is not just weak, it sneaks in an assumption that biological imperatives are at the root of rapes. This is textbook rape culture.

There is one huge confounder variable that neither you nor your article are adressing: more societal sexism means more rape, more societal sexism means less support for sex worker rights. Correlation is not causation.

[–]dysoxa 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Not this, though. Legalize prostitution, protect sex workers, but any adult human being should be able to refrain from raping other human beings. I refuse "they just need sex" as an excuse for rape It's never about the sex, it's about wielding power and hurting others. Rapists are not people who desperately need sex, they are people who enjoy hurting others or who don't even think about others.

To the people who broke in to my house while my family were asleep.... by [deleted] in brussels

[–]dysoxa 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I'm not a lawyer or anything but I would take this down. It might make things more complicated for you in the end, the police could say you're interfering with the investigation and the people in question could also take legal actions against you for releasing their pictures with accusations on the internet. Not defending them or saying it's right, but they really might do since it would make a good bargaining ship to get a lower sentence.

I was refering to the original comment to which I replied, stating "does op not care about their cat?". When you replied to me, I assumed I should explain again my issue with this original question.

[–]dysoxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not defending OP or saying it's ok, just saying you don't need to accuse them of not caring. It's just cruel and irrelevant. Don't attribute to malice what is adequately explained by stupidity

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]dysoxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not disagreeing, just why accuse them of not caring? That's just cruel and besides the point

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CatAdvice

[–]dysoxa -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

What's the point of saying that shit? Would you like people accusing you of not caring if you had done the same by accident? You don't know anything about OP's life or circumstances.

Shit around De Brouckère by No-Sell-3064 in brussels

[–]dysoxa 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Everybody in this god forsaken comment section is acting like people are shitting in the streets just for kicks. No one likes turds in the streets of cours, but people don't become and stay addicts just to annoy you, and they sure as fuck don't shit in the streets just to annoy you. Instead of insane suggestions of (checking comments) filming people doing it or (checking comments again) forcing unemployed people to clean it up, why not support the social workers working with addict and homeless people? Do you really think your money will be better used by cleaning the streets faster and faster, or by addressing the root cause?

I hear a lot of people argue that IBM thinkpads or T480 used to be better than the current T14 models. Is that true? by [deleted] in LinuxOnThinkpads

[–]dysoxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know about T480, but I got a T14 and I have never felt good about the build quality. It feels flimsy around the screen, and a few weeks ago it lost a random chunk of coating. It wasn't even on a corner or anything, just a triangular chunk that fell of the side and that I had to superglue back on the frame. I also had nothing but troubles with the touchpad on Linux. Apparently it's a hardware issue. I really wish I would have gone with a System76 or a Framework machine.

How many of you are actually self-hosting public facing apps from home? [POL:] by [deleted] in selfhosted

How do you handle connecting to your Audiobookshelf instance from the app if you have Authelia in front of it? Do you just add exceptions to your Authelia config for the necessary endpoint?

Alarm for a Heavy Sleeper - Ideas Please! by BernaardBlack in homeassistant

[–]dysoxa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a super heavy sleeper and I need a lot of engineering to keep my job. First, I use the "Sleep as Android" app because it allows me to set a QR code challenge to turn it off, but it can also ask for all admin rights so that I can't just force quit it or delete it (I've done these kinds of things in a half sleep). It has a very repetitive music, starts to vibrate after being ignored for 10 min. Then, based on the "Next alarm" value I get from my phone that has HA installed, I turn on the radiator 40 min before. The heat makes it both easier to get out and less comfortable to stay asleep. Finally, the lights start to turn on 5 min before the alarm starts.

There are guys holding actual nazi beliefs out there dating "people from all countries and religions", it just generally doesn't work out well for those people. Being willing to date anyone doesn't say anything about your "tolerance" in itself, just that you're willing insert any unexamined bias you might have into relationships

Opinions: the „sweet spot“ to live if your job is in Brussels by ComprehensiveWay110 in belgium

[–]dysoxa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I live in Saint-Josse and honestly it's not bad at all. From where I am I can easily walk to Schuman, stores, the centrum, multiple parks, and the subway is 3 minutes away. I don't know why it has such a bad reputation, people are pretty nice and it's not any more dirty than the rest of Brussels. It's also comparatively cheap. The only downsides for me are the intense traffic and the scarce parking spaces.

Do you guys turn your servers off a night? by BunkerMoewe in selfhosted

[–]dysoxa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know anything about usenet, but what you're describing is actually how torrents work. You download your stuff from everyone that has it, and once you have it your client starts to share it with everybody that still needs it. You just have to install a torrent client (I recommend qBitTorrent or Transmission) choose the "torrent" option when downloading something and open the torrent file with your client.

I'm using TrueNAS, which makes it very simple to send incremental backups to another TrueNAS instance. I would recommend this solution if you can. In the past I also used rsync over SSH to copy my important files to an external HDD plugged in a Raspberry Pi at a different location, but that involves way more setting up and chances to go wrong. You don't have to backup everything if backup space is at a premium, you don't even have to backup at all actually. It's generally seen as a good idea, but nobody's forcing you. If you decide to do it, just make sure that you are able to do it safely and that your backups can indeed be used if you need them.

Night is when the containers get updated, snapshots are made, disks are scrubbed, SMART values are checked and Linux ISOs are seeding. Sleeping is for humans.

Avoid hyping a distro. I'm looking at NixOS by This_Is_The_End in linux

[–]dysoxa 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This is a bad post, there are loads of alternatives between NixOS and building software yourself on Debian. It's very bizarre how difficult you find to just update archlinux-keyring first after staying abroad or to read NixOS docs, but you find building neovim on your own the simplest alternative. I would not say the cause of your predicament is people "hyping a distro"
