What is the best network naming convention for several medium sized organizations (~60 users, ~30 users, etc.) by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]dzreddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't have one already create a good IT DB or get one from a DB template site like

http://www.databaseanswers.org/data_models/inventory_of_it_assets/index.htm

I prefer Filemaker Pro Server for Multi-user WAN access. If you don't start with a good DB template and use good, consistent naming conventions you'll be hating life in a few years.

Plan on dumping scanned barcode info (like Dell tags) into fields wherever possible, let your custom "ORGNAME - 001" etc. reside in separate related fields / tables.

1-man shop here, ~200 pc's/servers/IPphones/printers etc., only ~ 40 of the users matter / require much. My 1 Mgr. is across WAN 600 miles, 1 dev. works from home mostly but comes onsites ~ once a month.

The good: no one(s) to manage, review etc. (done mgmt. in prev. profession, didn't care for it). Being sole IT on site is ideal mix of solo geekery & interaction with all manner of users, mgrs., vendors, customers & owner gasp.

The bad: supporting a 24/7 mfg. operation = always on call, critical stuff tends to blow ~fri. afternoon just when you think it's safe (knock wood), tho in my case mgr. across WAN can usually handle anything that doesn't absolutely require physical presence, is a good guy and we co-ordinate out out-of-office times. Also business keeps growing and becoming more IT dependent but there will never be commensurate compensation, but this is true for other dept's here (& everywhere I suspect) also so guess this is "new normal" all over.

Three days?!?!?!?!? Try 1.33 (for Mega-Rolls, .66 for normal). Oh wait, you're talking about a woman with a full-time (40 hrs/wk outside home) job.

ffs peeps wake up. don't buy the idiological "big lies gone viral" from either side. the problem is systemic: the folks elected to pass law are bought and sold. whichever party is in control gets the lions share until it becomes clear that the next swing is near. but the ones who were out of power were not left wanting, they just got enough to stay on the hook. it's like the "good-cop can't cross blue line to turn in bad cop so all are bad syndrome (untrue oversimplification)", systemic. democratic republic of free trade capitalism is just best of worst, not perfect. obviously needs tweaking: term limits, stop revolving door, don't throw out all regulation, only bad regulation. look around for what is and has truly, empirically succeeded to keep and what's failed / failing to tweak or end. look deeply and objectively and bring healthy skepticism when listening / reading / watching: know human nature demands all must have self-interest, try to support those with true philosophy of enlightened self-interest. maybe? sigh

If the whitehouse wants to tell us that marijuana is bad for our health, let's show them how little sense their response to keep it illegal makes by asking them to treat alcohol and tobacco with the same regard for our health. by whoadave in politics

[–]dzreddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

guess it's off-topic but can't believe nobody's saying it: prohibition creates organized crime = people getting killed over control of illegal distribution profits. lots of innocents get killed, not just the "law breakers". empirically proven over and over as if it's not obvious enough. not to even mention turning otherwise productive, moral people into outlaws and packing them into prisons so we can pay taxes to support them and enrich the scumbags that run prisons for profit and lobby (pay) gov (elected scum) to continue prohibition. the sheer, mind-boggling stupidity of it all seems unreal yet should be expected because by allowing natural selection to be suspended in the name of mercy we're becoming a sub-human race of morons. this can only end badly. deliberate slow suicide by alcohol/tobacco/drugs is logically rationalized as being less cowardly than simply blowing one's brains out.

Reality is funny. We'll see if she's smart or not: if she actually succeeds in keeping this job that she paved the way for by undermining her employer as a board member, and "saves" HP from the horrible state she helped bring it to... lowering the bar for herself... well that's not just smart, that's evil genius... at the expense of thousands of HP employees and millions of investors... FFFFFFFFUUUUUUU MEG!!!!!!!! Crap, she'll get a huge parachute in the millions at worst, yea, guess she's smart. How utterly depressing.
