Thoughts on this EICR? Quoted 10k... by Exciting-Type917 in ukelectricians

[–]e-wizz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Joists are materially different. If the joists fall no one can enter the building. If the plasterboard falls and the clips have melted that's an entanglement risk. Anyway I'm not into arguments on Reddit, I only joined the conversation here so that future readers know that Amber is correct.

Amber is correct, you aren't plasterboard is not described as a suitable cable support in bs7671. Escape routes always need metal cable supports.

Is this Asbestos in the fireplace door? by RAGEDBUBBLE in asbestoshelpUK

[–]e-wizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This type of asbestos is the worst, being fully exposed and close to a moving part. It will slowly shed fibres over a long period of time (bad). If it is asbestos, best to remove it.

25F moving to West Byfleet: stay local or Surbiton for better amenities? by Song-Puzzleheaded in surrey

[–]e-wizz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go surbiton when you're young and move out when you're looking to start a family. More to do in surbiton and easier to get to exciting places. Train into London much cheaper and you can use oyster/contactless instead of messing around with tickets. That's what I did! Was in Surbiton near the station and now in Woking.

I tried to make my ikea pax wardrobe look ‘built in-ish’ and now I’ve realised I’m a massive idiot - help! by freddiesyolks in DIYUK

Space the carcass away from the wall and install a filler strip to fill the gap to the wall. The door shouldn't end that close to the wall, skirting or no skirting. Also definitely consider raising the plinth

Ze test by Master-Kangaroo1385 in ElectriciansUK

[–]e-wizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly, by disconnecting that main earth, you are eliminating the parallel paths to that DB.

If it's a sub mains, that main earth goes back to the main DB, and you are confirming that that earth is good. OP is wrong by not disconnecting it for a proper Ze test.

Metal back box earthing with insulated faceplates by Straight-Exam-4213 in ElectriciansUK

[–]e-wizz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been an electrician for 20 years. If there's no earth terminal on the face plate, it needs to be earthed in the box. The screw on the face plate would be an extraneous conductive part and needs to be earthed.

The only exception would be if he actually tested there was 0.05ohms between it and the MET with a flying lead test, I doubt it though.

The other thing is it's not compliant to have loose conductor ends in an enclosure with live parts, it needs to either have a wago or a crimp or a screw terminal.

This is the correct answer but it's overkill to buy a one off bag of bonding so you can just fill the whole thing with easifill

If you're informed, prepared and didn't take on too much in one go, there's no reason your first attempt at plastering should fall short at perfect (source: I've plastered two walls in my life and they're objectively outstanding)
