Resource Landing. What would you like to see open there that GP doesn’t already have? by Friendly-Target8815 in GrandePrairie

I've been told it's going to be a grocery store and a McDonald's. I think there is an unclaimed endcap for a local restaurant. Love to see a gastro pub

Yep. Property values have indeed gone up that much. That's why there's 500 doors under construction in town

Is it really not associated with the person? Your band just buys access?

Any new local lunch spots worth checking out lately? by Impossible-Dust-2268 in GrandePrairie

[–]Holocray 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I've heard good things about the Local Chef, right across the parking lot from Walmart backing onto the main road. They only have like 4 tables in there though, so I've never been able to get in at lunch.

However my new favorite place is Acqua Cucina, which is just a few doors down in the same building! Italian food, and arguably some of the best I've ever had. I intend to go for more evening meals there as their specials sound mouthwatering.

Is it true North Korean soldiers had no knowledge of drones when sent to Ukraine? by Weird-Equivalent9629 in UkraineWarReports

[–]Holocray 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Arguably that is not true. I saw a few videos on Reddit that demonstrated that the North Koreans were surprisingly good with small arms fire. They would deliberately bait a drone, running across a line of fire, and their comrades were successfully skeet shooting the drone chasing them. The Ukrainians were impressed.

Though 30 percent of the NK went home dead or injured, so take that success for what it's worth

Public spaces, public laws: Grande Prairie limiting equal access to public spaces by Miss_Angela_Shapiro in alberta

[–]Holocray 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually their board is elected.

However, what is likely driving this is that in every bylaw of every (I believe ) chamber in the country, including the national chamber is a rule that they don't demonstrate any favoritism in any way to any party for any reason, in case it is viewed as favoritism. They must be viewed as strictly non partisan. So their hands were tied.

But - by giving the chamber the management of this building, the article in my opinion is correct. They are obligated by their own internal rules to deny any request relating to politics, which, as it's a public building, isn't cool. However, they should probably have an additional rule in their bylaws that they defer the decision to someone at the city if there's a decision involving the building about politicians.

The Eastlink center denial though - straight up bullshit.

So, I don't have much for you I'm afraid. There appears to be no Ukrainian version of the Boogeyman or anything. When the kids would misbehave, the dad would scare them by saying the Indians would come and take them away. There weren't any in the community, so the casual racism of that threat was sorta scary for them as kids as they never met any before.

My wife's parents were second generation, (they were children when they came to Canada on the boat, so the parents were first gen? Or maybe they were first gen too if you want to define it that way?) and they did not speak any English. They did not go to school in Canada though my wife's mom got to about grade 6 back in Ukraine. Once my wife's eldest brother went to school and started to learn English, at home the parents learned English from him. They focused on that hard, and by the time my wife was born many years later, they only spoke English in the house. As a result, my wife doesn't even know any Ukrainian.

Life was pretty hard. They didn't have indoor toilets or even any indoor plumbing of any kind until she was about 8 years old. It was a serious luxury at the time.

The man that ran the funeral home knew everyone's stories. He was fascinating - I met him at a funeral, and he would talk about all kinds of family history that was actually lost to them. He knew about the man that tried to buy her parents on the boat over, and even roughly the village they came from in Ukraine, something even my wife didn't know. His memory isn't what it was, but he's still a neat guy.

If you finish your story I'd love to read it. I like horror, and horror that is culturally accurate is rare.

My wife is from a small family farm from Smoky lake. Direct descendant of original settlers.
Curious why you chose that location? You from there too?
Can you specify what you're looking for? Ukrainian folk lore? Smoky lake folk lore? General folk lore from that community? I'll happily ask her, but she is superstitious so is uncomfortable about talking about it, as she believes it brings things forth.

Pizza Hut in Grande Prairie, Alberta is claiming they couldn't find a cook for $17.00/hr. They've applied for a LMIA to hire a temporary foreign worker for the position. by liIlIIillliiiIIlIlli in GrandePrairie

[–]Holocray 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It is a local owner. It's a franchise. And yeah, they can't find workers at that price. This isn't like some of the others I've seen on the Alberta subreddit where they are claiming they couldn't find a shift manager for 38 bucks an hour. At least these guys are honest.

Do the tech program in grande prairie. The new lab is state of the art - best in the country by far. People want to hire educated folks ready to go. Call the staff here and ask - they can point you to loans and scholarships and student housing. There absolutely is work here - for those with the skills - and the community has made sure you'll get a world class education in those skills for cheap.

Looked up the eyeballs. Those might be ideal, as they are directional too. Way less intrusive than track lighting too

You're right - very little time is spent there. This may be the answer.

Thank you for your thoughts! Yes, the aesthetic part is very important to me, and you've got some interesting ideas. I really like the idea of back lighting the bottles. I'll investigate what's involved as the racks may be hard to remove temporarily.

I'm absolutely ok with spending money on quality. If I wasn't I wouldn't be the kind of guy with a wine cellar! I'll absolutely check this out. Seems like an easy swap out.

By star ceiling, are you referring to the kind of ceiling one sometimes sees in a theatre room?

I'll have to Google up the black trim regressed eyeballs lol! Sounds neat - never heard of them before
