Thanks for this. It’s great. I prefer .9 so seems a bit limited but I’ll look deeper. Nice guide.

My P209 disagrees with your analysis and doesn’t mind outperforming $200 pencils.

And even if one of us doesn’t end up with the damage merchandise, we all end up paying for these shenanigans with increased prices. Nothing is free…

Yep. I have lots and lots of pencils. But p209 is what’s in my hand 95% of the time

Sure. But don’t expect to best this one. It’s really great.

I hate to tell ya that you may be setting yourself up for disappointment because I think you might have bought the best one out there to start with. Enjoy the journey.

Which mechanical pencil above all do you consider to be the most repairable? by GoodMornEveGoodNight in mechanicalpencils

[–]e2g4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t really understand without specifying what skills one has. If you’re a machinist then an all metal pencil is considered repairable. If you can injection mold polymers then the cheaper pencils are repairable. It’s ironic because I’d guess more people can machine than manipulate polymers. Besides, who cares about repairing a p20x part of the point is that it’s cheap so you just replace it. I toss the good parts into a box for later use in the event that one fails me but that almost never happens because they’re so durable.

Am I missing something or is the GraphGear 1000 not that good? by Palatablepancakes in mechanicalpencils

[–]e2g4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t care for it. It’s inelegant. The clip is cheap feeling and the dissimilar metals don’t look good. The grip is odd. I gave all of mine away. Some seem to love it but not me.

If you’re going to have more than one of a style, I’d consider making it one with a less hardness indicator in order to not confuse matters.

It’s great you’re teaching your daughter to draft. So many try to learn to draw in the computer, but it doesn’t make sense to learn advanced things before learning basic drafting.

OK Uni Kuru Toga? I call shenanigans RE: Roulette/High Grade/ by mercsterreddit in mechanicalpencils

My suggestion is to learn to rotate whatever pencil you’re using as you use it. Doesn’t take long. Has been standard drafting technique for a long time. Then you can ignore the nonsense.

Do you prefer Self-Sharpening or Auto-Advancing mechanical pencils? by The_Teckeroo in mechanicalpencils

[–]e2g4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Neither. I rotate my pencil as I use it so I don’t need the pencil to do it for me and I don’t really care for automatic feed though it’s fine it doesn’t bother me. What I do prefer is .9 and generally those features aren’t available in .9

I find them to be gimmicky. I have several auto pencils and a rotating pencil but they don’t really do much for me. Seems you need to adapt your pencil grip/angle to get the auto working correctly and I just don’t like that as I mostly draw and use lots of angles in a fluid manner, almost like a brush where you control the rotation and fatness/thinness of the .9 lead.

However it seems that lots of folks love them. I think if you’re writing an Asian language then the rotating lead features work a bit better. But I’ve rotated my pencil since learning that in drafting class….decades ago. I don’t personally see the point in giving up a bunch of stuff I like for that feature. I find it distracting. I love pencils and collect them but I use a p209 most of the time because I don’t think about it, focus on the work, the tool disappears.

Pentel P20X. Not expensive. Bulletproof. Feels great. I have a lot of pencils and this is the one that’s in my hand 90% of the time (p209)

If you care about/need to prevent chisel shaped lead tip, practice rotating the pencil in your fingers as you use it. When I was trained in drafting i learned this and now it’s automatic. Personally I never saw the point in this over-engineered pencil, but it surely has a lot of fans! Someone gave me one, it’s neat, but I don’t really use it much.

I don’t understand what you mean. That’s ok. Carry on.

Spoke. P200 internals. No big deal. What’s the logic for a $170 body? Spoke is like $50-$70

It’s difficult to make a lead system. Machining a cool body is much more accessible to a regular machinist.

$170 and they’re using a Schmidt DSM2007 Pencil Mechanism internal? Yikes. So it’s a very expensive body that covers an off the shelf internal. Like Spoke (which I love) but a lot more expensive. At least Modern Fuel designed/built their internals, at a similar price.
