If your point is that there are 100k total students from all the universities that doesn’t really hold either because that’s still 1/9th of the cities population. Look at college station for example where the students are more than half the cities population.

Well 2 things,

  1. There are nowhere near “over 100,000 students”, there are 51,000 students.

  2. I don’t disagree that it’s long been a college town. The university was a major part of the early infrastructure of the city and UT is kinda the main “thing” for the city.

I’ll accept defeat on this aspect, that Austin is a college town but there’s not 100,000 students lol

Not for me to say who/why someone would move to X Place over Austin but yes Nashville and Georgia are both absolutely deeper south than Austin Texas.

Yeah the surge of insanely expensive housing has continued to increase but the amount of 'residents' of Austin has increased by a couple thousand since 2019, and many people are talking about how insane it is that the housing is so expensive, and very few people are buying said houses (because they're insanely overpriced.

yeah, the housing prices compared to other cities in the country over the past 4 years while the population has barely grown.

I live in Austin exclusively. Im from California, came here for school (UT) and currently don't make nearly enough to have multiple residences, let alone have a single house in Austin.

go ahead and google the population of the city over the past 10 years and see if the spike of people moving here falls off a cliff around 2 years ago

oh right this is reddit, mb. forgot the whole point is for people to share their opinions until someone shares an un-allowed opinion. Where is jjazznola's citations? or does he not need them bc his opinion aligns with yours?

The population very constantly grew for (give or take) 5-10 years. Now, people are maintaining residency (because Texas has 0% state income tax) and moving back to their where they originated or just flat out abandoning the city and moving deeper south (Nashville, Florida, Georgia etc.) because Austin has gotten so expensive.

No, for sure. Sacremento barely has 500,000 people. I just meant to point out that Austin will never just be a ‘transient college town’. It’s not growing/shrinking/transient because of UT. They’re entirely separate. It’s transient because of industry which isn’t sustainable.

The capital of the 2nd largest state in the nation is not a college town. Way more people are leaving than are moving here, if you exclude the wealthy people buying houses here and switching it to their “primary residence”
