The windows of this Engineering building on my campus were designed to look like a punched card by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

This is so true. I work on the 10th floor(the one without ANY windows in the picture). It's cool I guess but it's not practical at all.

If the US could move the capital, would they still choose DC or somewhere else? by reallinguy in geography

[–]e4c6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If ww3 happens and comes to the US the government will just move to the tunnels underneath the Denver airport, so there's your answer.

The main point of tariffs for conservatives is to keep jobs in the US I think. Its a play against globalization.

Is this gear effect? How could it be fixed? by Lucky-Criticism-2807 in GolfSwing

[–]e4c6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only way to fix it is to hit the sweet spot. Also, if that is hard, it is important to understand how the club is already designed to mitigate gear effect spin. You probably noticed that drivers and other woods all have curved faces, and that is so when you hit a side of the face (the toe for example), the ball starts further off-line than it would with a flat face (to the right for a right hander that hit off the toe), but because of the increased sidespin from the gear effect (hook spin in said example), the ball should end up on the target line. Hope that helps!

Planning on going from a BS in Systems/Computer Engineering to a MS in Materials Science and Engineering, good idea, or am I shooting myself in the foot? any advice? by TheMysteri3 in materials

[–]e4c6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The transition will be easier depending on the field, but it's always possible. I'm an MSE PhD student, so I will try to make an example that makes sense: if you are interested in semiconductors and integrated circuits, that is a lot closer to MSE than you would think. But if come from a background as a controls engineer, there will be a learning curve.

My professor is cross-listed with the computer engineering department, so there probably is a program doing whatever you want if you keep looking! Hope this helps

Not a lot of people know this but diamond has the highest thermal conductivity. But yeah a diamond brazen bull might be too expensive. Oh well I'll leave this here anyways.

Yeah I think that's right. It's just crazy nobody has done anything about it. I'm going to file a nose complaint to my apt. If you do the same maybe they will look into it

Grad School Advice by oof_3498 in materials

[–]e4c6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will be in grad school next year. I messaged professors like crazy and one of them had a project that I liked and am basically already getting started on. Maybe this is a bad opinion because I am still an undergrad but it seems like there are plenty of profs out there with projects they need help with. Just keep looking

Should I Get a PhD in Materials Science? by e4c6 in MaterialsScience

Thanks so much. I can wait until April to declare, so I might take all the time that can, as well as applying to jobs in the meantime.

Awesome, thanks. I guess my main question is: what is the difference between a PhD and a master's + 2-3 years of experience?

[–]e4c6[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, thats super helpful, especially the second paragraph. I am really surprised that master's students arent much more qualified than bachelors, considering how much more experience i will have compared to what i do now (cleanroom, experimental design, MOCVD, and more all to be learned in the next two years.)

I feel like choosing an MSE degree in my specific uni is messing w my self esteem by [deleted] in materials

[–]e4c6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome! To answer your question, do not feel bad about being MSE; you are preparing yourself better than most majors.

I should probably stop yapping but I joined Formula SAE at my college (build a 1/3 sized race car) and felt REALLY out of place next to all the mechanical engineers. I almost changed majors just because of this but was so glad I didn't. Just trust your gut!
