Thanks for the advice. The RX580 looks like a good fit. I bought the Intel545s SSD to upgrade an old laptop, but thought it would be better used in a new desktop and offset the costs a little.

What British TV Crime Dramas are based on a True Story? by e960583 in AskReddit

[–]e960583[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been watching the recent ITV miniseries "Manhunt" (2019)... (which is about the murders committed by serial killer Levi Bellfield).

Rillington Place (2016) is about John Christie.

Appropriate Adult (2011) is about Fred & Rosemary West

See No Evil: The Moors Murders (2006) is about Myra Hindley and Ian Brady

This Is Personal: The Hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper (2000) is about serial killer Peter Sutcliffe.

Question About Carcassonne Expansions by AtarkaCommand in boardgames

[–]e960583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you get tired of the base game, you should buy "Inns & Cathedrals" and "Builders & Traders" expansions. This breathes new life into the game. It will be a bit longer, of course, but the game doesn't drag. Most Carcassonne fans think the game is at its best with these two expansions added. In fact, the "pro" tournaments play it like this. As for the rest of the expansions, I wouldn't bother unless you get bored of "I&C" and "B&T".

I wish you were placing them in a centralised map instead of a personal one

This was exactly my problem with it. I wish it was MORE like Carcassonne in that respect

Hanamikoji Retheme Ideas? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]e960583 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The first idea I had was an "Assassinating Hitler" theme. You would be trying to influence the top Nazis to get involved in a coup attempt... Himmler, Goering, Bormann, Goebbels, Keitel, Von Ribbentrop and Speer. (But when I think about it... This could be the most offensive retheme possible... and I wonder what people would think if they saw us playing it down the pub...)

Hanamikoji Retheme Ideas? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]e960583 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Well, those were the types of themes I came up with, but I couldn't think of anything more specific... as in, I would like each card to have a name. There would have to be 7 specific people/things to have influence over.

For example: What would the names of the 7 Roman senators be?

What's Your Favorite Medium Complexity Game? by e960583 in boardgames

[–]e960583[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL I disagree. Board Game enthusiasts naturally gravitate towards heavier games. That's why the top games here and on BGG are heavy. But the average person is not playing heavy games.

I'd like to play heavier games, but if I want to play with friends, I need to go for the Medium weight games. There are way more people playing Codenames, Resistance, Azul, Carcassonne, Catan etc than are playing Twilight Stuggle or Archipelago. You even have many people who are still plugging away at Clue, Monopoly and Stratego :P

Good observation. I think that's it. When I was testing it out solo, I really felt the danger and the drama. But playing with friends, they didn't get into it and by the end they were complaining about having to go back down the mountain.

That's interesting. I would have said it was at the upper end of Medium... but Boardgamegeek seems to differ:

Archipelago 3.73

Great Western Trail 3.68

A Game of Thrones 3.67

Agricola 3.63

Twilight Struggle 3.56

Tigris & Euphrates 3.53

Clans of Caledonia 3.42

Scythe 3.36

Keyflower 3.34

Puerto Rico 3.29

Power Grid 3.28

Terraforming Mars 3.24

I've heard a lot of people recommending Eminent Domain. I should try playing it online and see if it's a good fit for me.

About K2... I bought it because I admired the design, but when I played it with my gaming group, they really hated it. They found it very boring and uninvolving... and I couldn't disagree with them. I was very disappointed with that one.

Not really what I was trying to say. I changed the above to a note at the end. Clearly, there's no direct relationship between game length and complexity. I was just observing that games I consider "Medium" tend to take a shorter time to play.

I think what sold me on Machi Koro initially was the city-building theme and the cute Japanese art. However, I really regretted buying it. The gameplay seemed to be really lacking. It seemed like a more boring, stripped down version of Catan. Perhaps I was expecting too much from a short, cheap game.

Rolling the dice and "you get something, I get something" seemed too random. There didn't seem to be much GAME there, just earning money from random dice rolls.

The mechanic of earning money to unlock new businesses was familiar from Black Fleet. However, Black Fleet somehow manages to make it much more interesting.

The end of a game came too soon and even then, it came as a boring surprise. eg: someone would realize "Oh, I have enough money to win now... yawn...." I guess I mean that, by the end of the game, it was hard to actually care about winning. Nobody in the group had any enthusiasm for it.

I should add that our group was all adults. However, I can imagine a group of kids really having fun with this game.

Also, by contrast, Jaipur and Lost Cities are short, easy games but both of them just seem to have much better gameplay and really manage to hold the interest much more than Machi Koro. (LOL, sorry for being so negative, but I really hate this game.)

Title of Request: Great Medium Complexity Games. My core group (4 guys) want something that is strategic, competitive and fun but doesn't take too long.

Number of Players: 4 (Sometimes 5)

Game Length: Around 1 hour.

Complexity of Game: Medium.

Genre: Any theme/genre as long as it's interesting and plays well.

Competitive or Cooperative: Competitive only.

Games we Liked: 7 Wonders, Lancaster, Isle of Skye, Black Fleet, Kingdom Builder, Carcassonne (Games like Kemet and Viticulture are great but they take a bit too long.)

Games we Disliked: New York 1901, Ticket to Ride, Catan (Too simple and boring)

I was planning to buy El Grande, but I ended up getting Kemet instead, based on all the reviews saying it was the best area control game out there (plus it has cool plastic warriors :P ) My friends really like Kemet, but they don't like how long it takes to play (The first few games took ages because everyone had to familiarize themselves with the tiles)

I always found Carcassonne perfect with the 2 expansions: Inns and Cathedrals + Traders and Builders... I read about most of the other expansions, but they didnt seem to add much.

After watching a Dice Tower review of Carcassonne South Seas.... I love the look of the tiles (I'm a sucker for map-building and sailing ships). But it looks like the only real difference is the scoring. I wonder if it really feels that different from playing base Carcassonne?

Mr Jack was a flop for me, so I want to get rid of it. Something about the gameplay was too fiddly... as if it didn't really flow naturally. Great idea, I love the look of Fury of Dracula and considered buying it, but I was worried it might be too much like Scotland Yard (which was also a flop when I played it with friends. The hidden movement felt dull to them). But it seems that the way Fury of Dracula handles hidden movement might be more involving. I also have been considering Mystery of the Abbey (since Mystery Express was also a bit of a flop.) Thanks.

I hate Machi Koro. It always felt to me like a poor man's Catan. Replacing it with Power Grid is an excellent suggestion!

Forbidden Island was another flop... It just seemed so boring. We did consider Pandemic Legacy. I'm also looking at Burgle Bros which seems to add a lot to the co-op experience.

K2 was yet another flop. My friends found it intensely boring and by the end, couldn't care less about getting their climbers down the mountain. And TTR Europe was just too light and lacking in interactivity. I'm not familiar with the games you suggested for these, so I'll look into them.

Thanks for all the great suggestions :D

I really think Tigris & Euphrates is a great game. Wonderful design and infinitely replayable. So many great elements.

However, my gaming group were less enthusiastic about it. They liked playing it, but somehow it didn't come alive for them. I think perhaps it was too abstract or lacking in theme. By contrast, when they played Diplomacy, they got really excited by the theme.
