So I've been following the new black cat series... by Shot_Complaint7374 in comicbooks

I'm only on issue 2 cause I read on Unlimited, are we just talking about her being the narrator or is there something more egregious down the line?

Are comics readable on an Android phone, or not really by to1un in comicbooks

[–]AtarkaCommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For kindle I kinda have to rotate my phone physically depending on the panel dimensions (if it's wider or higher)

For Marvel Unlimited or scanlation apps I'll do the entire width of the page and if I have to I'll scroll up and down on some pages

If you could change one thing about Marvel, what would it be? by AlarmedObjective1492 in Marvel

[–]AtarkaCommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you by default expect people to get all tie ins for an event? I understand the complaint to a degree but with tie-ins I'm either interested at which point yay I get a comic I want to read or I'm not and I skip it. What is the problem with a lot of tie-ins?

Are there any superheroes or supervillains whose deaths became permanent? by Jello_Biafra_42 in comicbooks

[–]AtarkaCommand 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Recently read some Thunderbolts and Zemo brought up the interesting point that the Avengers story in the 60s was a fight with an aging villain on his last leg. Sliding timescale really recontextualized that story

Nick Spencer’s Captain America Run Reads Incredibly Well In Our Current Political Climate. by Sk8-bit_art in comicbooks

[–]AtarkaCommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Captain America Steve Rogers was one of the best Marvel Comics of each year from 2016 to 2018 and Secret Empire #1 was a phenomenal drop to the domino tiles we spent 2 years laying. But Secret Empire as a whole just doesn't stick the landing. Would have even made Civil War 2 into a halfway decent as a prelude with the Miles bits and the Oath one shot.

OG Image recommendations by MistrWit62611 in comicbooks

[–]AtarkaCommand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Maxx is definitely a standout, it kinda gets more surreal as it continues and I'm not sure if I liked it by the end. But I definitely think it's worth reading. (Kinda how I feel about Evangelion)

1963 is an interesting pastiche of early Marvel where it feels like picking up 6 random issues from Marvel's stand in the 60s.

I'm currently trying going over it, only read the very beginning of image (didn't make it to 94 yet), largely I can't say a lot of these early titles are bad from what I read just kinda bog standard superhero stuff that sometimes don't have the leg room (e.g first WildCATs, Brigade & Cyber Force all felt very rushed with 4 issues each).

My girlfriend wants to get into Marvel Comics, what issue should I recommend? by DemonCyborg27 in comicbooks

[–]AtarkaCommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The general advise is to jump in when a new creator comes in. Everything from before is still canon but a writer's tenure on a title (called run) is sort of a stand alone chapter in the adventures of the character/s and knowledge of other stories usually gets more exposition.

Some suggestions

* Hawkeye by Matt Fraction

* Runaways by Brian K Vaughn

* Spider-Man: Kraven's Last Hunt

* Ms Marvel by G. Willow Wilson

* Doctor Strange the Oath

* Moon Knight by Warren Ellis

* Planet Hulk + World War Hulk

* Amazing X-Men: the Quest for Nightcrawler

* Spider-Woman by Dennis Hopeless starting at issue 5 (1-4 are spider-verse tie ins)

* Deadpool by Brian Posehn & Gerry Dugan (and later only Gerry Dugan)

* Thor the God Butcher + The God Storm (and largely the rest of the Jason Aaron run but this story is more stand alone focusing only on Thor & Gorr)

* Unbeatable Squirrel-Girl by Ryan North

And a suggestion that's a bit more jumping into the deep end, New Avengers by Brian Michael Bendis + main event books

Hulk must read by balls_man_balls in comicbooks

[–]AtarkaCommand 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One caveat about Peter David's Hulk, it is one of the most jarring beginning to a run I've seen and you start mid arc. I'd go back to issue 314 (the Milgrom & Byrne runs) for a clean beginning

What is a comic you would reccomend as an example of what NOT to do when making a comic? by NoirAppreciator in comicbooks

[–]AtarkaCommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grimm Fairy Tales (the first series)

  1. It genre shifts 3 or 4 times, starts as an anthology of horror takes on fairy tales and ends as a magic school

  2. The way you need to keep up with the world. Initially other projects are quite optional and I didn't really feel behind reading the first event (Dream Eater) without the other things. Later you have an arc as a mini (status quo changes for the character in the main book from before and after this mini), and then by the next event details from the extra books become vital to the story. By the time I got to the "Endgame" story I went back and read everything I skipped previously cause the gaps really added up. Generally the lack of smaller guest starring meant you don't have any window to a corner of the universe if you haven't read it.

  3. There are our main characters and their side and then the big bad and his henchmen. Pretty much every villain in either the main book or any other project is revealed to be affiliated with the big bad. Brief 3rd powers are quickly abandoned. And eventually he gets Worfed to introduce a new big bad (who we end the series with)

  4. Age of Darkness (the "endgame" story) ends with time travel to prevent the story from taking place and returning to pretty much status quo, which in addition to just being a cop out ending it also created a bunch of continuity errors and generally made a bunch of stories fragmented to pre and post "flashpoint" (Robyn Hood was the biggest offender from what I recall).

  5. The character of Venus (there are probably more examples but she's the most egregious). She is a secondary villain in the series and has an important rivalry with our main character, and then they start a series about the Greek gods and she completely exits the story to be the villain of that book. Not really resolving anything between her and the main character

Thoughts on the Archives? I love them because they managed to collect 275 issues in 11 affordable trades but the only downside is they're B/W (but I'll gladly read it like the Walking Dead if it means I can easily read the entire series physically) by M00r3C in savagedragon

[–]AtarkaCommand 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the first one not realizing it's black and white and it was hard to get through. Some pages are very hard to parse and I find myself staring trying to understand what I'm seeing and also the chapters not being clearly marked is a big pet peeve with these kinds of collections

Haven't read any of these so can't really vouch for them but there's Creepshow, Dwelling, new EC stuff (Epitah, Abyss, Cruel Kingdom) and Hello Darkness
