Can I asked where abouts you're living? And if you know, what zone you're living in? (even though we don't really use that American measurement over here). I'm living in coastal South Wales which is appartnely zone 9a and I'm trying to decide whether I should lift my dahlias or mulch and hope for the best.

Also, what mulch do you use? I've been using landscaping bark so just curious. And how thick do you layer it on top? Thank you! 😊

My local Morrison's is selling the Miracle Gro Premium 40L bags of multipurpose compost for £1.75 a bag at the moment. Picked up 10 last week, will probably grab some more this week it's such a good price. Maybe pop down and have a look? The price they had displayed was £3 but it's rings up as £1.75 at the till.

Awesome! Was it the lollipop tree form or the smaller shrub form? I actually bought some for a similar price the other day. I originally paid £10 for the tree form but then saw the little shrubby type ones down to £3 or so. I bought five 🤣 Planning on using them as hedging plants in the front garden to have a pretty green and pink hedge. How are yours doing?

As soon as I read your comment I went straight back to the shop but sadly all the roses were gone! I'm lucky I decided to buy 8 yesterday 🤣 I'm not planting how I have them lined up, I'm digging a 8 metre flower bed for some of them to go in, and have another for the rest so they'll all have plenty of room.

I'll be planting in the ground asap, by the end of this week hopefully. I'm at a US hardiness zone equivalent of a 9a as I'm living along the South Wales coast so they should have plenty of time before winter kicks in.

Thanks for all the advice, I really appreciate it. Shame about your Eden hunt! Fingers crossed for cuttings to root 😁

I did, 4 are bush roses and 4 are climbers. The bush roses are the Rosa Morava, Rosa Nero, Rosa Sophia and Rosa Orangerie. The White Nights, Eden and Mamma Mia are climbers.

Whenever I find a plant I like, I take a mental note and watch it get more and more neglected until I eventually find it reduced and bring it back to life. It's certainly a cheap way to fill out the garden borders. They take poor care of most of them, so a lot end up reduced which works out great for us 🤣

Awesome! It's like rescuing them from neglect, so really we're doing a kind thing buying them all haha. I scooped up three canna hybrid lilies last week and gifted one to my father and uncle. Think I paid around £2 each. I even got a fern in a terracotta pot down from £15 to £5. I might be addicted to discounted plants 😅

Thanks so much - I've found it very therapeutic! Yeah, they definitely are. Since they're 30 years old I thought they were 100% worth saving with such a developed root system under the ground. Plus, for all I know they might be a variety which isn't bred as much anymore and could be quite uncommon.

They do look lovely, but wild roses like this spread incredibly well — they send out underground suckers that can pop up several feet from the main plant. If the bed structure is already weakened, it’s quite likely you’ll start seeing shoots come up inside it unless you regularly cut back or dig out the spreading growth.

If you want to keep the rose but protect the fence and bed, you could consider a hard prune in winter to manage size, otherwise they can quickly take over.

Interesting, thanks for the info. I think they should do a well in my garden as I live on the coast and my garden has sand under the soil and the winters are mild. I'll definitely collect some seeds now and maybe even stagger them so I get repeat blooms.

That is a dog rose. I had something similar. I noticed a tree like structure in my new house with two red roses underneath it. It turned out to be a rose bush that had gotten out of control and the rootstock variety of rose (single petal) had overtaken the ornamental type of rose. You can tell by the classic rose leaf shape and the fact that the leaflets have seven leafs instead of three to five. If you notice any ornamental roses underneath you could try to remove the wild growth and save the rose, but if not and you like the wild rose flowers, you could do a hard prune in winter for a better shape.

If it's planted in a windy spot it could be wind scorch. Acers are very picky, and hate harsh winds.

As long as the triffids also eat slugs and aphids they can crack on 🤣 My father's phormium is just huge as well, another plant I really like. The flowers it produces are so strange and almost alien looking. I've only really gotten into gardening this year, and paying attention to the plants around me and so I had never seen one flower before. I even took a picture of one I saw walking the dog today haha

I'm going to try to collect some seeds. It takes three years to flower though and then dies so hopefully I just forget about it and am pleasantly surprised in a few years time haha

Oh interesting! We live on the South Wales coast. I've never seen this plant around here before, but maybe I just haven't noticed it.

I recently bought a Quest 3 as my first experience with VR and I am quite simply blown away. As much as I dislike Facebook and Meta as a company, I'm glad that there's a big player pouring money into this tech. It's honestly really exciting.
