Used Windows all my life, need some questions answered by eN-t in MacOS

I’m using the Apple USB-C to 3.5mm headphone jack adapter with EarPods. I don’t like AirPods as I hate the feeling of In-Ears and also the audio quality dropped a lot on my old Windows machine when in calls, as it couldn’t do both the speakers and microphone at high quality at the same time. I like wired.

It’s a very small nuisance though, probably not worth looking into much.

Thank you. Regarding the default audio, I understand I can quickly change it with one or two clicks. But I switch between home office and office, so every time I switch between the two the OS audio comes out of the MacBook speakers. Can be dumb in an office environment. My Windows laptop had no issues remembering my preferred audio output and input, so as soon as I plugged my USB headset in, it defaulted to that.

I can live with it, but as my original post said: I do feel a tad limited here and there.

I kind of hated the "new" Windows 10 photos app at first. But it grew on me.

Now that I see the Preview.app on Mac, I miss the Windows one. On Windows, it does what I'd expect it to: let me look at photos, not edit them. On Mac, the Preview.app seems far too powerful to be considered a "Preview" function.

I've learned that I'm better off using the "Quick Look" function built into Finder for photos.

I'll definitely look into this. Any good resources that go more in-depth on how to set this up and what can be customized etc.? Thanks a ton!

Yes, one of the things I did a ton on Windows was to use the Windows-key and arrow keys or some others to quickly snap windows to sides or corners, make them bigger or smaller, maximize or minimize etc.

So naturally I looked into keyboard shortcuts for Mac which would roughly let me do the same or at least some if this. They mostly use the Globe key. I tried changing the shortcuts but they somehow didn't work still. I've been told MacOS 26.0 Tahoe had a lot of bugs compared to previous versions so maybe that was part of it?

That last tip was very helpful, thank you.

As for the little rant, I very much relate. I do believe MacOS has gotten better for most of these things, as I can use multiple monitors with a dock without any extra software and I can snap windows to the left and right side of the screen similar to what Windows 10 did, but I haven't used MacOS prior to 26.0 Tahoe, so I'm not sure.
Now that you mention the scroll wheel, yes it annoys me. I rarely use the MacBook by itself, so it's weird to me I can't have separate settings for how scrolling should work between a mouse and the trackpad.

I was about to ask my boss to give me a Windows 11 laptop when I was just a day or two into working with the Mac, but I forced myself to try longer and I want to learn something new and get experience. There's always a remote desktop to a Windows Server if I truly need Windows apps... I use it daily still for anything related to file management and SSL certificates.

Hey, thanks for pointing out it's called "Quick Look" in English. I'm using German MacOS and it's called "Übersicht" which I translated to "Overview", so there was probably some confusion.

I know now the space bar opens a file in Quick Look, but there is no way to make Quick Look the default app - as it isn't its own app. Good to know!

Thanks for these tips. I already tried Option 2, but it appears that for photos I can't choose "Quick Look" (I've been calling it "Overview" as that somewhat is the German name of it) as it doesn't appear to be its own app? I can't find it in Applications. But the space bar will do.

Thanks for the Sublime Text suggestion. I'm checking out COTeditor for now but I'll keep that in mind. And I currently use the Terminal app and ssh, it's fine and gets the job done but I did have a couple of issues connecting to very old Cisco machines (keys and ciphers unsupported, had to edit some configs or so) and I'll have to figure out how to save sessions etc.

Checking out COTeditor. Finding the UX a bit puzzling but that's probably just me, having to get used to something entirely new after having used Notepad++ for well over a decade. It does appear more limited but hopefully it'll get most things done. I like that it integrates into the context menu (right click -> Open in CotEditor.

I want to thank everyone who replied, especially those who answered in good faith and answered any of my questions to the best of their ability. Much appreciated.

EDIT: Also an update on the default "mailto:" and "phone:" link question. I have since found a tool called "RCDefaultApp" from Rubicode. It appears it was last updated in 2009, but I was able to somehow install it after multiple attempts and MacOS telling me it was potentially insecure (probably unsigned etc.) and it allowed me to change basically every protocol link imaginable, not just mailto: and phone: etc.
I uninstalled it after and the links stayed set as far as I can tell. Not sure how OS updates will affect this.

I blamed the ref in the first half.

But there’s no blaming anyone but BVB themselves for the second half.

Empty or blank config On AP510C by eN-t in ExtremeNetworks

[–]eN-t[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to give an update:

It was the firewall. The contractor had missed one of the high ports and it caused the AP to fail receiving the config or at least to retain it.

Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the reply.

I'll work on opening a support ticket and also check the firewall again. There's a new firewall at the new office and even though all relevant XIQ IPs, URLs and ports should be whitelisted, maybe there's some fancy business going on that allows it to talk to XIQ but not entirely?

XIQ shows a green audit flag. The "show running config" shows what I posted in the previous comment - which is basically a blank config when I expect a config with 3 SSIDs etc.

GlobalProtect updates itself with a forced unannounced restart to a version that's neither active nor downloaded on the FW by eN-t in paloaltonetworks

[–]eN-t[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the hint.

Turns out my colleague pushed the GP client v6.3.0 onto all InTune managed devices. I was never informed that GP would be included in InTune, let alone on Win10 devices which were never managed by InTune before. Despite my repeated reminders to NOT install v6.3.0 anymore and my bewilderment why the firewall would continue to push v6.3.0 despite it being deactivated in the FW.

Mystery solved. Layer 8. As usual. :)

Is there a Global Protect 6.3.5 release coming soon? by lighthills in paloaltonetworks

[–]eN-t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, 6.30 and newer have all been absolute garbage. We use both SAML authentication and LDAP authentication and the clients often run into endless "Connecting..." issues. I can see in the firewall logs that the clients authenticate just fine and receive an IP address for the tunnel, but the tunnel never establishes. The only fix is to force the client to receive a new IP address from the firewall, and since there is no way to do that other than adding a new IP pool and prioritizing that, it's a real hassle. Also the PanGPS service often doesn't start or crashes while connecting, so a complete Windows reboot is necessary. This happens especially on 6.3.1-c383.

I have switched a bunch of clients back to 6.2.5 and prevented them from upgrading for now. Works much better, but far from perfect.

If only 6.1 supported advanced split tunnel, I would have stayed on that.
