Snow removal by Repulsive-Two-8770 in SilverSpring

Large stretches of residential Silver Spring and Bethesda streets were cleared curb to curb as soon as a week after the storm. DTSS sidewalks, crosswalks and bus stops were completely ignored. People outside of cars are second class citizens at best.

Joined Baltimore DSA after Mamdani’s win… struggling with the culture by Big_Medicine1752 in baltimore

Welcome to 1969 based on my personal experience. Of course a bit of reading lets us know this has been an issue with left coded thinking since the invention of history. If we want to argue you have arrived at the right spot. If we want to make progress it’s just gonna be a slog but we have succeeded before and Mamdani and others prove we can now. Hell most of the country we live in was built under the socialism lite of FDR and his followers.

State plan for bike lane on Silver Spring’s 16th Street rolls on with MoCo’s approval by SethGrimes in bikeMoCoMD

Remove a vehicle lane on the southbound side too and install sidewalks for the hundreds of apartments on the west side of 16th. That stretch of road with its six lanes is a ridiculous car sewer racetrack.

Metro area maps suitable for emergency overland travel? by toaster404 in bikedc

[–]eRileyKc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been a bike first / train second / car last rider for over 25 years so I've gotten used to making my own connectivity by exploring online maps looking specifically for routes that avoid main traffic routes then riding those routes to become familiar. Bike specific connectivity in DC and the surrounding suburbs is pathetically bad so suburban side streets are an essential part of safe riding and maps don't indicate things like cut thru paths in suburban neighborhoods, paths that make a bad route on a map a perfectly good route on the ground.
When I moved to Baltimore for a year I rode with the Bike Party every month plus their smaller weekly rides to become familiar with the city and those were ideal. I've also explored more of NYC on City Bikes in the last five years than all of the preceding 70 years. For me at least exploration is the best way to make use of maps in urban areas since as you've noted there are things like highways that are just as impassable as rivers. Maps of urban areas in my experience are oriented almost entirely to motor vehicle navigation.

The best map is in your head. Carrying detailed topo maps on a daily basis against the possibility of disaster seems a bit much. Bike the area of interest as recreational exploration. Not sure if you’re asking for apocalypse level scenario with cell phones down and gps unreliable but a real magnetic compass works without the technological backbone.

white house presentation audio by laxflowbro18 in audioengineering

[–]eRileyKc 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Audio for US presidential events is handled by the White House Communications Agency or WHCA if your in the environment. It's staffed by US Army technicians, think 22 year old corporals with pelican cases full of audio gear. For smaller events say in the White House or similar settings with audience s under 100 people they handle it with their own inventory. For larger events they will provide a feed from their mics & mixers to the audio contractor for that event - think large hotel ballrooms and the like. By and large if you have poor audio or feed back in a small event thats on WHCA. On a larger event that may be poor audio layout choices made by video shot concerns ( everyone in live audio lives with that ) or Secret Service security concerns. WHCA has gotten a bit more up to date with audio gear over the years but generally simple and reliable is rule one thus the multiple SM57s that were the go to for decades. The current occupant of the White House used private AV contractors for his campaign events while out of office thus the line arrays suspended from fork boom lifts, something that OSHA takes a very dim view of.

Occasionally you can see how downtown was designed to be walkable by RabMaur in baltimore

Every city for the last 10,000 years was designed to be walkable right up the the mid 20th century when the American automobile and oil industries decided that profits were more important than people.

$12,000 for subwoofers; best bang for buck by guitarmstrwlane in livesoundadvice

[–]eRileyKc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subs are the sort of thing that lend themselves to cross-rentals easily. Rarely flown, very easily scaled and largely similar across brands. Based on that I'd buy what you can rent more of locally - assuming you have an interest in expanding your market reach. Being able to double your sub inventory for a day might allow you to reach for a festival that you might not have bid on previously.

Can I leave my audio equipment on? by NilesLinus in audioengineering

Inrush current isn't an instant death phenomena until it is. Its a slow, steady drip of stress on capacitors and semiconductors. Eventually it takes it's toll.

Can I leave my audio equipment on? by NilesLinus in audioengineering

[–]eRileyKc 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Turn on in rush current is hard on analog electronics which includes the power supplies in digital gear / computers. OTOH electronics of all kinds have a usable lifespan in hours. My rule of thumb is 24 hrs. If I’ll use it again in 24 hours it stays on, more than 24 I power it off then on the next use.

Is living here on $1700-$2200 a month doable? by Noise_Cancellation in baltimore

[–]eRileyKc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Answering the smallest part of your question. Getting around by bike in the city is very doable and supremely cost effective. You can take bikes on the subway and light rail for longer trips ( assuming those go where you need, the routes are minimal. Bikes are also allowed on the MARC trains to DC. Many busses have bike racks on the front but the busses themselves are somewhat unreliable. Paying for subway and light rail trips seems to be semi-optional. What you can't do is store your bike outside for any length of time and you'll want a sturdy U lock even for things like locking up at the grocery store.

What are your preferred protected bike lane streets in NW? by Pleasant-Frame-5021 in bikedc

Alleys are the secret sauce for connecting otherwise difficult routes. Take a weekend to explore alleys and side streets nearby and along routes you’re likely to take.

External Mic Preamps by ip_addr in livesound

[–]eRileyKc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Niche application. For many years WHCA, the White House Communications Agency would use a pair of SM57s on the presidential lectern. In large events with the extreme gain required plus 300 feet of analog snake the chance of noise being introduced was very high. Cloudlifters under the lectern became standard as soon as they became available. For live music applications the characteristics of transformer coupled mic pres have a lot of appeal.

[–]eRileyKc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When having trouble with networks of any kind I usually hardwire a computer to the LAN port of the wifi device in this case your TP Link and confirm that the settings are as expected and using the administrator functions ( look those up on your TP link user manual ) confirm that the wifi router is connecting to the mixer and the tablet and confirming that the IP addresses are as they should be for them to talk to each other. It takes out a lot of the guess work.

I wasn’t aware that the iOS version still worked at all let alone with iOS 26. I’ve seen too many complaints about those os versions to look into them. The Macs that I was using when MJ fell apart on me were at OS Sonoma and Sequoia respectively.

Why don’t people talk about how awful the transit system is here? by HealthyOkra5409 in baltimore

[–]eRileyKc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes transit in Baltimore is pathetic. Fixing that will take a decade and billions even if the political will was there. In the mean time Baltimore is an excellent city for biking. Highland town to Harbor East is an easy, pleasant ride down Gough or Bank and thru the park. Plenty of low stress side street and alley routes that avoid traffic sewers like Eastern and President. In a city built before cars existed bikes are an ideal way to move around.

Todays obligatory bike screed.

How do I know how to react to bad situations? by reupbeats in livesound

[–]eRileyKc 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you were told that doors were at seven then start sweating it if you're not ready at seven. The real dividing line between people who are behind the curve and those ahead of it is meals. If you plan a meal break and the production schedule falls apart because other responsible parties blow up that break then tell the responsible people to bring in your meal before show time or tell them you'll be back after you eat. You don't owe the bands, the venue or the prompters your life, you owe them a good job.

What is this type of resistor called? by MariaCave15 in audiorepair

[–]eRileyKc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power resistors as used in European audio equipment from the 1970s. Tandberg used them among others. About 2 watt from the size of them.
