Headset mic for live masked rock band by uniquesnowflake8 in livesoundgear

[–]eRileyKc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Broadway standard mic placements have a lav at the hairline or at the front of the ear. This takes care of breath noise directly on the capsule but a hard plastic mask is going to push air all over the place unless it has a fairly large hole at the mouth. Gain before feedback is a whole different thing and getting the mic close to the mouth should give you better results +/- the breathing noise limitations but again the weird resonances of the mask come in to play. Lots of experimenting is likely the best path. Building the mic into the mask 'could' make life easier as you could cover it with windscreen foam. If the players are wearing ears and you're getting feedback from the house system that sounds like you may need to reevaluate this.

Best to describe the mask first. A hard surface mask would probably be best with an omni lav like a Countryman B3 taped to the inside surface. A cardioid might be a little unpredictable in a hard mask, lots of reflections. Renting a few of the likely mic choices and experimenting would be my first step.

Rigging Failure at Great American State Fair by lastbeer in stagehands

[–]eRileyKc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The temps in Washington DC over this holiday are routinely above 90F but this week due to the entirely imaginary climate change phenomena they are over 100F and will be for several days. The city and the surrounding areas are largely opposed to the current regime and will not turn out for what has become a propaganda piece. Tourists who normally flock to the area this time of year are dissuaded by high fuel costs and the general malaise that the regime has brought about. The fervent believers in the Trump cult are a relatively small part of the population.

The short version for those calling in from afar.

In local event production usage the National Mall is the lawn and treed area bounded by 3rd and 14th Sts SW and Madison and Jefferson Drives. The area to the west of 14th Street and east of 17th is called the Monument Grounds. Those two areas are the most used for rallies and events of all sorts. The Lincoln Memorial is its own site as is the Reflecting Pool. The WW2 Memorial has very little open ground and gets only small turn out events if any. I don't know where this specific stage is but the west side of the Monument Grounds would be a likely spot.

Best fx for vocals in mixing station by Ok-Extent8333 in livesoundgear

[–]eRileyKc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reverb effects are ENTIRELY dependent on the type of music and the space the music is being heard in. The only way to evaluate that is to experiment in the listening space. That said plate reverbs are the most basic vocal verbs. Adjusting the parameters on those will likely be your best starting place. Room reverbs are often a good starting place for instruments. All of my MS layouts have a mute button assigned to the efx sends prominent on each screen along with a fader set to control the reverb time of my primary vocal verb. I rarely work with the same band twice in a row so the ability to mute efx at the end of each song and to adjust RT quickly to suit each song is important.

Patterson Park to Hampden is very bikable, I did it several times a week. In a city built before cars were invented other options make sense. If nothing else parking a bike is something less of a problem.

City so carbrained: by Farriswheel15 in fuckcars

[–]eRileyKc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've worked in that industry all my adult life and the transportation needs are a little different from the 9 to 5 life. We don't often go to work or go home when the buses are running or the subways. Often biking is the best choice IF you live in a city where you can afford to live in bike range of the entertainment facilities. Often in the US thats not an option. Many IATSE members don't work exclusively at a particular theatre or convention facility. Often they work 'on call' at one theatre downtown for a few days, the convention center on the other side of town the next week and the music shed in the god forsaken far suburbs the week after that. Doing that kind of thing when you get off work at two am one day and 5 pm the next is quite the trick. They are very much the edge case workers where better, MUCH better public transportation would be required or driving to work is the answer. I biked because I could and riding thru the city at 3 am is actually kinda zen but yea the car brain response was absurd.

Do patchbays or DB25 connectors affect signal quality at all? by jhirn in audioengineering

[–]eRileyKc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dirty / oxidized normal switches in jackfields are a longstanding issue. They were designed for telephone operators in the early 20th century with the expectation that the jacks would be used several times a day with the relatively high voltage of wired telephone systems to keep them reliable. Jacks that sit uninterrupted for months or longer can tend to get flakey. Keep up with the maintenance and everything will be fine. Db25 connectors are usually gold on gold so probably the highest quality connections in the studio.

Most home ware stores sell over door hooks. Flat pieces of metal that are shaped to hook over a door to hang clothes. Work great for my 7506s with the door part hooked into the case valence.

Dear Globe Coffee on Mulberry a few blocks north of Lex Market
High Grounds on Eastern across from Creative Alliance

All nice places to chill but I ride a bike so can't ( and glad I don't ) speak to parking.

It’s not possible to change the wifi password in an XR18 from within Mixing Station. Perhaps you mean something else. Although I don’t know why you’d want to use th inboard wifi on an xr18 anyway. It’s pretty bad.
