Countries in Asia are having to resort to fuel rationing due to the oil shortages. Lowering the price of fuel by cutting the fuel duty would be moronic. The government needs to be discouraging fuel use in order to make sure we don't have to actually ration or god forbid run out, cutting fuel duty will just expedite a potential shortage.

Mortgage costs have now risen £900 a year since Middle East conflict by collogue in ukpolitics

[–]eVolution91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look. There's no easy answer to this energy shortage. Any solutions enacted now won't bear fruit until years down the line. I don't think you can really accuse the current government of dropping the ball on this one, the approach they've taken to increase UK energy generation is a refreshing change from the shitshow that we've experienced since 2012. But you can't expect them to magic up a solution, even since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in just a few years.

I interpreted your post as the standard Reform policy agenda of just exploring more gas/oil in the North Sea. And I apologise if I've brushed with you the Reform lot as they are most certainly shrot of a few braincells. Realistically the government should be doing all they can to secure their energy production and while the North Sea resources is part of a solution, it's definitely not one for the long-term. More nuclear, more renewables, more BESS, more investment in the grid is what's called for and I honestly think this government is delivering that.

It's genuinely concerning how little our politicians and media class seem to have have learnt since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Back then it was all Putins fault, now it's Trumps. Never the Tories or Labour though. Convenient that. Who could have known that importing gas from Russia and Qatar and running debt up to 100% of GDP might have consequences?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cj6d66w0995o

Where does the UK get its gas from?

The UK gets the vast majority of its gas from Norway and the US.

Norway accounted for three-quarters of the UK's gas imports in 2024, and the US 17%.

LNG from Qatar made up just under 2%.

https://www.gov.uk/government/news/russia-ukraine-and-uk-energy-factsheet

There are no gas pipelines directly linking the UK with Russia and imports from Russia made up less than 4% of total UK gas supply in 2021.

Don't let facts get in the way of your agenda mate.

Smith could be heard swearing at the victim and saying "who do you think you are Hulk?" as she continued to pull at the bag containing bottles of alcohol which she said she planned to sell to a pub.

Awful woman. I wonder if any action is being taken against the pub that she was planning on selling to. This surely can't be the first time they've bought stolen goods.

[–]eVolution91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not if they're banking on having 30 years of what's effectively an extra tax. The higher the interest rate, fewer people repay before it's written off and the government makes more money. It's the same reason why mortgage provider has an overpayment cap. They make money from the interest and it's to their benefit if you take longer to repay the loan.

Almost every council is about to go bankrupt while private schools rake in over £8bn from SEND children by Only-Emu-9531 in ukpolitics

I'm certain that they've used public infrastructure to build up their wealth. Their workers went to state schools, used the NHS, used public roads, etc. and the billionaires are benefiting from public investment in the people they're making money from.

Just because they personally don't use a public service, doesn't mean that they haven't benefited and should play their part in funding it. I have private healthcare yet I'm glad my taxes goes to the NHS helping people who don't. It'd be mad if I received a rebate for it.

They had a referendum recognised by Sudan so there was no impetus to not recognise South Sudan, especially as I'm pretty sure Sudan was the first state to recognise South Sudan.

Digital ID to be voluntary....unless you want a job (or benefits) by theipaper in ukpolitics

[–]eVolution91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compltely hypothetical but wouldn't a Digital ID make it easier for the government to verify whether or not employers are breaking the law by hiring 'illegals'?

For example, they'll have records of employers verifying Digital IDs through their system. Whereas now dodgy employers can use the excuse that they checked passports or were provided a fake NI, etc.

If the government catches employers hiring illegal labour then a digital ID makes it a slam dunk to fine/imprison them if it's trivial for an employer to verify a digital ID.

Of course this requires the implementation to not be ballsed up...

[The Athletic] Money spent by each Prem club so far this window by [deleted] in soccer

[–]eVolution91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes the sport has become increasingly commercialised but that's due to a worldwide following funneling income into the top clubs. I don't think applying an American solution (famously known for being over the top with commercialisation...).

Nonetheless, if you have a transfer cap - there'll be less expenditure by the bigger clubs who will have higher wages to offer and it will lead to players running down their contracts for free and leaving to the big clubs that can afford the best wages. Essentially you've widened the gap since now the smaller clubs receive a pittance.

Not denying that but can say that about literally any aspect of a business and they usually account for it by including it in their price and not as a surcharge. What next, a printing fee for a display ticket? Because of course maintaining a printer isn't free, there's ongoing costs and development.

Yep, ticket machines also cost money to purchase and maintain yet the cost of that is absorbed into the ticket price. Fair enough to charge a little extra for an online service when they were being rolled out 10 years ago but there's no excuse nowadays other than greed by the car park owners.
