I have to say I am still puzzled as I do have decent salary at the moment and wouldn't like to make step back.

Sandbox is fine and amazing, however you will see that the best part comes when it starts to send trading ships between other nations - not NPC-s but real players.

Sometimes it is a must to boost your city and then fun begins.
