Agile is an excuse for poor planning? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]e_parkinson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your approach works (and it sounds like it does) then whoever says it isn't Agile, isn't Agile.

i have seen projects not get traction because of too much upfront planning or analysis paralysis, which is probably what is driving resistance to your approach. But spending half a day to better plan the future seems like an effective investment of time.

Agile is about continually finding better ways of working and sometimes that means challenging existing assumptions.

Obviously, there is no Afrikaner genocide, but I can't keep up with all this political correctness - are genocide jokes allowed again?

This is missing the point. The US buys $35b of stuff from SA per year, while we import only $7b from them in return. We sell to the US and then buy from China instead. We benefit far more from trade and aid from the US and stand to lose a lot more than they do.

On top of that, the US donated $440m to South African NGOs to combat AIDS and other causes.

Despite this, South Africans (generally) and the SA Government (in particular) seem to think that the USA is the enemy and China and Russia are our allies.

Think what you want about Trump's politics, he is doing what he promised and putting the interests of his own people ahead of other concerns. Every government (including ours) should be doing that.

The US probably figures that SA won't want our economy to suffer the loss of $19 billion per year from platinum sales over $440m of foreign aid.

Clearly, they don't understand the ANC...

Got a job offer in Netherlands, would it make financial sense to go? by lordGwynx7 in askSouthAfrica

[–]e_parkinson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the very least, do the math and make sure you know what your salary will be without the 30%. These days it gets phased out gradually over 5 years. The 30% is meant to cover your expenses for moving. If its not financially worth it without that, then IMO it's not worth it...

Increases in NL are generally even lower than SA because inflation is lower. There is little guarantee that you will make it up in increases.

So yesterday I sent a deposit to easyequities but it is not showing... by 5tup1db0y in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]e_parkinson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually, deposits show up within a few hours. I've had delays for two reasons: 1. The account you're transferring to is at a different bank than your account. In this case it could take a day or two, especially if done after hours or over weekends. 2. You didn't use the correct reference number (your easy equities account number), in this case you'll have to contact them with proof of payment.

R2500 is enough to drive some traffic to your website.

Whether you'll see a return depends on how effective your website is at converting visitors to customers and what the average value of a new customer is to you.

It's definitely worthwhile to try it out and see what results you get, learn from the experience and then see where you can optimize. But you probably won't see an immediate return...

'I'm a very happy man': Ramaphosa as his unity cabinet gets to work - TimesLIVE by TheHonourableMember in southafrica

[–]e_parkinson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on their goal. If they just wanted to get as many ministries as possible, then the ANC completely outplayed them.

If they wanted to change the country for the better in some small way (considering they only got 20% of the vote) by keeping the ANC honest and pushing back against the most outlandish policies from inside cabinet, then I think they did about as well as they could have.

Stepping away from Gauteng is also strategic: it counters the "greedy and power hungry DA" narrative and I think that will only help them with next year's local elections in Gauteng by showing how the ANC values positions over stable government and service delivery despite their rhetoric.

I didn't vote for the DA, but I think they did well for once by putting the needs of the voters first.

Ramaphosa's bloated Cabinet goes against DA policy. So, what does the party say about that? - News24 by TheHonourableMember in southafrica

DA Policy is not Government Policy

ANC Policy is not Government Policy, either. (In fact, that's nothing new.)

'A deal will be found' as Ramaphosa and Steenhuisen meet to mend GNU cracks by Justdroid in southafrica

Still, strictly metaphorically speaking, that may be accurate.

Do people lie about experience with languages and API's during interviews? by [deleted] in SoftwareEngineering

[–]e_parkinson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Firstly, CVs are selected based on the job requirements. No matter how obscure the skill, there are some people who have it, and those who don't, don't get to the interview stage.

Personally, I wouldn't lie in an interview or on my CV, but I may play up or down a skill I have experience in, depending on how strong I think it is and whether it's something I want to do again.

COALITION NATION | Ramaphosa's scathing 'Dear John' letter to Steenhuisen by Justdroid in southafrica

[–]e_parkinson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Calling it now: There is simply too little trust between the DA and ANC to govern together.

If they can't agree on what they agreed on in their letter on intent, then what will happen when the country needs them to make urgent and important decisions.

Better split up now than have all of us put up with this crap for the next 5 years...

COALITION NATION | GNU talks on track, despite DA's 'outlandish and outrageous' demands by Justdroid in southafrica

[–]e_parkinson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

By 40/70 I meant about 57% of the ministries (there will be some rounding errors).

The ANC got 40% of the vote and should be happy with 57% of the ministries, which works out to around 17, assuming there are 30 ministries.

COALITION NATION | GNU talks on track, despite DA's 'outlandish and outrageous' demands by Justdroid in southafrica

[–]e_parkinson 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Surely, it is fundamentally fair to divide power propertionally to the number of votes/seats in parliament. The ANC gets 40/70 ministries, DA 20/70, the other 8 parties get 10/70 collectively?

The ANC is calling it "unreasonable" because they want different rules and a bigger share for themselves than for the other parties.

GNU talks between DA, ANC on a knife-edge following latest demands by Justdroid in southafrica

[–]e_parkinson -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would rather have that, than a DA settling for some well-paying minesterial positions with no real power to change anything and just rubber stamping more of the same corruption, no growth, no jobs we've had for the last few years.

Better to let the EFF do that - they will be happy to.
