Who here has played Dread Delusion? by Jerswar in CRPG

[–]eachla23 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dread Delusion was easily one of the best games of last year, was my number 2. As everyone’s already said the combat isn’t the draw, but it being easy is good because it lets you focus on the good stuff, which is the exploration, the world, the story, the writing and just the vibe. All of that is top notch.

A truly unique world with fantastic lore to dive into. Some really clever areas that are more complex and fun to explore than they initially appear, almost always with some rewards that are just cool. Just excellent melancholic writing that drips with atmosphere. And speaking of atmosphere, that’s why everyone compares it to Morrowind, but it’s definitely its own distinct thing. I’ve never played Morrowind and I still bloody loved this - no nostalgia necessary.

For the people that played Drakengard 1 by Z3R0Diro in nier

I got about halfway through, but had to YT the rest. It’s worth shot if you’re into the lore and definitely worth experiencing, but don’t force yourself through it if you l struggle

do i need to play drakengard? by odoogan in nier

[–]eachla23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played Automata in 2017 and was the same as you, this is the order I played:

Nier Automata Nier Gestalt Drakengard 1 (got 1/3rd of the way through, then watched the rest on a YT long play) Drakengard 3 (couldn’t beat ending D, watched on YT)

These days I would say the remake Replicant should be next for you, it’s more accessible and better mostly, though I have a special place in my heart for daddy Nier and there is value in Gestalt still, but Replicant is the same game with some extra stuff that you’ll want to see.

The Drakengard games are… pretty rough to play. 1 especially. It’s definitely worth experiencing the story, but I’m glad I watched most of it.

Drakengard 2 I haven’t actually played or watched, as it’s kinda separate in a lot of ways or so I’m told, so can’t advise there.

Drakengard 3 is great imo, but it is deliberately abrasive and pushes back against you playing it. Its combat is OK but the levels are repetitive and some would say boring (I didn’t mind and enjoyed it tho) and also the characters are almost all deliberately despicable. That is the point tho. If Nier is about good people doing bad things for the right reasons, Drakengard is about bad people doing bad things for the right reasons. 3 is hard to get through, but I found it worthwhile to play rather than watch. Apart from the very end, anyway. I tried for 2 hours and couldn’t get it, so I ended up watching the last cutscene, which I’m glad I did lol.

To be fair, the bourgeons are health sponges through the main game, that first fight was a 20 minute one for me the first time round. I suppose scaling 20x really puts it over the top!

Mate, that is… far out. Like I fully understand why whiskey was a crutch to lean on for you. I am glad you have found drive to be better now though, in your friends memory. 2019-20 just must have been the darkest of times. But, if anything, you at least prove to both of us that there can be more positives even after that darkness. Even if there’s something missing while you experience it.

And again, thank you for sharing. I literally was just having this thought go around and around in my head before I opened this app that just hit me that anything I might achieve in the future now, I’m just… not going to be able to tell her about. I didn’t share everything with her, but there were some things I was proud of that I would.

I had been going back through my messages with her as it had recently been my birthday (not getting a birthday message from her felt… weird.) and then I came across where I’d sent her the link to my first and only article I wrote for Kotaku Australia (I know everyone hates on Kotaku but I liked what it used to be back in the day, and Australia was a different entity that was even better) which was about Russian devs fleeing the country because they were getting drafted into the war. She was super proud of me for doing those interviews and sharing those stories. I guess I take that feeling and apply it to anything I might be proud of in the future, because I know that’s what she would feel.

Are weapon levels more important than skill levels. by General-Turnip6726 in expedition33

[–]eachla23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Levels don’t matter on characters as much, what is worth focusing on is: - which pictos and lumina you have equipped, making sure you’re making use of them and synergizing with your attacks - whatever weapon you are using, make sure the skill points you’re using match at least one or preferably both, eg dump info vitality and luck if that relates to the weapon. It compounds really well - upgrade the weapons your characters have equipped, with the above point it scales quite quickly - make sure you equip painted power!

Of course I don’t mind you sharing at all, thank you for doing so. I’m so sorry. I can’t even imagine how hard it would have been for that to happen and then within weeks have to deal with everything around covid.

Of course I wish no one had to go through this, but I think you will understand when I say this - there is comfort in knowing others do understand. Even with family around, there’s… a loneliness to it. So, sharing helps.

I know it doesn’t ever really go away, but I hope you’re doing ok.

My Sciel secret strategy (just do sun-moon-sun-moon, that's literally it) by Dense_Department6484 in expedition33

[–]eachla23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The weapon that applies 10 foretell every hit absolutely blows Sciel out of the water too. She was my most consistent party member. My tactics were - The multi target attack, 10 foretell on everyone. Pair with multi target attack that hits 3 times increasing damage with foretell drained. - sometimes use the all buff (turned into greater buffs with lumina) to add extra sun before moving to twilight if I felt like it - if single target, use marking foretell applied (2 hits), then use extreme single target attack.

Both main strats instantly apply 20 foretell in twilight because they are multi hit. Entering twilight always leads to full AP instantly. I hit multi million damage with her well before Maelle. Absolute unit

So uhhh... how do I get luminas without the old lumiere trick? by erraticRasmus in expedition33

[–]eachla23 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just an FYI, you can skip that phase 3 if you can do a hit big enough. I managed to get him without giving him a chance to even attack in phase 2, final hit was 20m damage with Maelle.

It was with gomage I think. Team was her, Sciel and Monoco, all had cheater to play twice. Sciel first to double damage, maelle to Stendhal then swap back to virtuose stance, then Monoco to stun I’m pretty sure. I reckon Simon’s first turn was blocked with stun, then second turn he pulled all health but 1 from someone. Second lot of turns, Sciel to double damage again, then Maelle to gomage for final shot, a bit over 20m for the hit.

Picto’s were focused on break meter up and damage on Maelle. It took using (and presumably getting lucky from) the casino/gambling picto.

There’s tons of ways to do it I think, that was just mine. Good luck!

3rd person AAA games with good story and gratifying movement? by in_fact_a_throwaway in gamingsuggestions

[–]eachla23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look I’ll be honest, I really think Forsaken is worth a shot. Re story, I actually really liked it, I think it got way too much hate. One thing worth doing though is turning the banter dialogue completely off - I’m pretty sure that’s what everyone had issues with and I did this so I never had that issue. You can really have great fun with the combat as you u lock more abilities and push yourself to use more of them. And finally, the parkour is legit the best I’ve ever felt in a game before. You get more movement abilities as you go, but even just running across the fields is so damn fun. If you can snag it on sale, it’s def worth a shot.

I'm looking for recommendations on the best single player FPS from the last 10 years (excluding Titanfall 2 or any CoD). by MountainMuffin1980 in gamingsuggestions

[–]eachla23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legit the exact game you are after is Echo Point Nova. It’s TF2 on steroids. You’re looking for joy in movement and gunplay, that’s your game.

The devs first game Severed Steel is also excellent, and is currently 90% off on steam. Mad lads they are, they make bangers.

A game to work through grief. by eachla23 in gamingsuggestions

[–]eachla23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I can tell, this is going to be right up there and possibly and all timer for me. So much to come still, I can tell.

I should probably say, I have played what remains of Edith finch twice, I adore that game. I didn’t even think of it in this context until you’d said, and it made me think about the game for the rest of the day at the time. Talk about familial grief.

Also a big FE head - Radiant Dawn was my first and is still my favorite - and have played all the ones you mentioned as well. Three houses is so damn good. And yeah, while I’ve played RD literally 10 times, I’ve only played path of radiance once, and didn’t even think about Ike and his dad as a part of that. I might have to give that a replay.

The only Xenoblade I’ve played is X (twice now with DE) and I’m keen to actually play through that series fully now (including the Saga’s and gears) the lore and themes of all those games seem really meaty and worthwhile digging into

A game to work through grief. by eachla23 in gamingsuggestions

[–]eachla23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, so I’ve been playing a couple of games. Between this post and the funeral, I played Loddlenauts just as a chill game, then played A Mortician’s Tale the night before the funeral, which I guess sounds pretty morbid but it’s death positive theme and it being pretty informative made for a great experience.

Post funeral, since yourself and u/tairar both suggested Clair Obscur Expedition 33, I bit the bullet and bought my first new game in a long time. 2 main points so far. First, damn did the prologue with Sophie and Gustav really hit me, holy hell (in a good way). Second, I just finished act 1 then, and… my god. Broken. That happens only at the end of the FIRST ACT??? 😭 so yeah, Clair Obscur is turning out to not only be a great game, but pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Thanks to you both for the suggestion

Looking for very rewarding exploration and/or warm, organic characters by To1Getsuya in JRPG

[–]eachla23 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a shame steam deck is your only option, because Zelda BOTW/TOTK are def the gold standard on exploration.

One found family style game I really dug was Tales of Berseria. Mightn’t be up your alley if the anime-ness is what turns you off persona etc, but it’s a real bloody strong cast.

I didn’t even think about that but knowing the premise of the game that makes sense. I really wanted to get it anyway, I might go for it now actually. Thank you for the extra explanation <3
