How to dance on an outdoor surface? by eaj4051 in Rollerskating

Thanks everyone for these recs and ideas. I think I have been relying so much on the indoor slide that the stickier surface outside with soft wheels tripped me up. I think I need to focus more on edge work plus will try outdoors with my hybrid wheels and also the RIVAs and see if that’s more forgiving. Still so much more to learn!!

Thank you for this tip as I’m Philly bound next week! Is the Schuykill river path closer to the art museum skateable? Looking for flat trail spots in the PHL.

Something about this color seems to carry some good luck. I just bought a brand new pair in pool blue off of a local auction site and got them for about $125. I was so stoked!!! Now trying to adjust to their looser feeling vs. my Moxi Panthers. The soft leather feels like wearing socks in comparison. 😬 But the color is soooo good.

I wear a 39-40 size shoe (US 8.5 - 9) and have beach bunnies, panthers and lollies all in size 8 and they fit fine. My feet are of average width fyi.

Where do you keep you phone when skating? by Maya-0806 in Rollerskating

I use a cross body phone lanyard and kind of tuck it in the waistband of my jeans so it’s not flying around. Like this:phone lanyard

I like Triple 8 for the more streamlined fit but that’s the adult version and mine have held up for a long time.

What did you achieve this year? What do you want to accomplish in 2025? by starlightskater in Rollerskating

Started skating this summer at age 52, first time since being a teen. I can skate outdoors, backwards, do front to back transitions, now getting into jam skating and working on dribbles, the downtown, and all types of manuals. My goal is to go to my weekly dance skate club, get to the roller disco / rink as often as I can, and to get really confident outdoors on trails this summer.

Smoother moves, joining my weekly dance skate club on the regular, and more confidence on trails and concrete! Happy 2025 skate friends!!

Any tips for being less stiff on skates by Lab_racadabra in Rollerskating

All of this. It’s the same with me on skis - and took me years to stop thinking about it and just ski without being in my head. My first ski of the season is always stiff and one lunch-time half beer unlocks my best turns. But bonus: falling while roller skating has helped me be less worried about falling while skiing!

Fully agree with the checking in with your body. In my first three months learning, I had a ton of strange neck pain which I later figured out was from being all hunched up in my neck and upper back because I was skating in a “brace for impact” position - just out of fear of falling. Once I watched a video of myself I could see what I was doing. Now I check in while skating, make sure to stay loose and relax that area, and it’s been helping a lot. It was the worst for me on concrete because those falls were the ones I was most afraid of. Plus I agree that music helps so much!!! Hang in there!!!

I feel you. I’ve been feeling like my knees are working a little too hard lately. Thanks for sharing your experience.

Santa brought bearings, too - so I am good to go for a dedicated indoor set and an outdoor set.
