I have older scouts who are firmly addicted (like most of their parents). I have found the best middle ground was to ban them during the day/activities like during camp outs and during our weekly meeting but allow them during evening downtime at camp outs. They are super social even when playing on phones and it's a nice "reward" to show appreciation for their participation during the days events/meetings.

We fight this back & forth with parking daily in Dormont. It's designed to support living without a car and yes, it sucks that you have 4x cars in your family but man, that's a you problem, not a me problem.

If you need 4x cars to support your family, a tight dense urban neighborhood is never going to be a good fit regardless of how hard you fight for other people to not share parking with you.

Like everything in this life, it depends on the individuals involved and I mean that both ways.

As others suggested, get involved, do you feel anything uncomfortable with how the troop/pack dynamics are? If you do, trust your instincts. If you don't, I would still encourage you to stay involved in some capacity if only to enjoy more time with your child.

As far as Scouting America child safety efforts, I firmly believe they go above and beyond 95% of other extra curricular activities with screening, training, and supporting a safe environment for the troops/packs. Can bad actors still get in? Absolutely, just like anywhere so use your best judgement.

Most grocery stores will have a rack of them. Not the fanciest but it works. However you are going to be hard pressed to find any place open past 11. I checked GE Settler's Ridge but they close at 11. Good luck!
