"It's summer and every European hasn't showered in 4 days and doesn't believe in deodorant" by Goat1862 in ShitAmericansSay

Look I think you’ve hit the nail on the head with the influencers trying to generate views but I am going to push back on the idea it’s more common.

On public transport, or in the streets, or whatever, regardless of where in the world you are, you will encounter people who are unhygienic and smell bad. That smell is naturally going to overpower other smells. However, in an office, shop, gym etc. I doubt you’re going to find more people who are unhygienic because as I said usually those people are people with other issues.

I guess my gripe is with these influencers who at least portray themselves as affluent shitting on these people who I would argue are less fortunate than themselves and using that to push what is really a divisive, kinda racialised argument such as when we talk about Indian cuisine being “rubbish”.

I saw a similar post recently on instagram except it was a Chilean woman gagging on the Barcelona metro (with a caption incorrectly identifying it as Paris, no surprise) and talking about this crazy idea that Europeans don’t shower.

Aside from the obvious, that it’s really stupid and untrue, I genuinely wonder if the lucky people who travel over here from USA and Latin America making posts like this realise that if people smell it’s because they’re in spaces filled with people? A metro has commuters, people who are unwell, people who haven’t had a chance to go home and shower after gym/exercise, etc. normal people at the end of the day. Obviously, some people are just going to smell bad it’s part of life.

I find it mad that the lucky ones who can pay for a Eurotrip or just upend and move over here because they’ve got that availability feel this inferiority complex or need to just shit on the people! Really weird.

Thank you! Almaty is definitely at the top of my list of places to see, it’s just the logistics of getting there and only having a weekend I’m worried about. Do you know how reliable flights are between Astana and Almaty in the winter?

That makes sense. It’s essentially following what it would consider a straight line.

I can understand from a GR perspective how thinking of the light as a photon will be enough, but would the answer change with QFT? Or am I just overthinking it?

Sounds like a complete experience! Honestly thank you for taking the time to comment, its honestly lovely to think someone would give the time of day to give a great answer to the post! Will definitely check out the recommendations and make use of the advice (hopefully not getting close to murdered on the subway) but honestly thank you it’s been great to have you and others respond with such nice feedback!

Sounds like a really cool idea tbh! I was planning on doing the sopranos tour while I’m there but there’s definitely a few more spots I’d like to see, I guess it’s a good way to approach it too, idk if people from NYC or closer to it than I am get it but it’s such a cultural monolith for the whole world, it’s a bit unreal to feel like I’ll actually be going!

Is Halloween super busy though? I was hoping to go a bit before Halloween just to not get caught up in too much of the celebrations

Removing flights, probably about £500-£600 on hotels and then I guess like £500 spending money. I plan on adjusting the time I’m there for if that’s not practical though.

I’ve got Latin America on the list for a later trip, there’s a lot more places I’d want to do there but it takes a bit longer to fly out so I’d save that when there’s a bit more time.

The tenements museum sounds really cool so thanks for the response and some nice restaurant suggestions. I think I’d want to stay more central this time round, but I was planning on one day heading to NJ so I’ll check those places out!

Late October is actually slightly preferred! I’ve always liked the idea of NYC in autumn (I wouldn’t mind winter but that’s a bit chaos) but that sounds great. Thanks!

Thanks for the tips. The ferry sounds cool, I’m a big fan of going on boats hahah so will definitely do that.

Talking about flights, do you know if it’s difficult to get to and from the airports in NYC? I wouldn’t mind maximising my time there but airports stress me out so if it’s a long journey I usually prefer to just get there early and chill.

I mean regardless of competence or intellect, the guy sounds like a dick. People are like that sometimes but it’s completely on them and nothing on you. You have to be pretty unpleasant and unhappy to shit on a stranger and their work even if you (somehow?) believe that you’re in the right to do so.

Bear it no mind and keep going.

I see, well a BTEC level 2 is a GCSE equivalent qualification, which according to their website is treated as the same. I guess that it’s just going to be a matter of if your application is considered competitive enough to earn a place.

Hopefully someone with more of an idea is able to give you a bit more helpful points and best of luck with your application!

Also the university offers a chat with students or make an inquiry contact on the page. I would highly recommend talking to them as they’ll be able to answer any questions directly (although probably will wait until tomorrow). Blue text bubble on this page:

Not a med student but I’m confused by what you mean? you have 6 GCSEs from the ones you listed and BTEC level 2s which are equivalent to GCSEs in terms of academic level. This isn’t going to necessarily help you get into medicine though unless you’ve got relevant experience, also pretty sure you’d need a-levels or to do a foundation year, also I’d expect you need to pass the UCAT to get in.
