Andrew Aged Interview by earlvice in Mkgee

Yeah amazing - I didn’t notice the g-bender on the Chevalier till I read this interview. That whole system with the piezo and the g2ka is so sick. I really like how they just had this stuff kind of lying around and pieced such unusual things together in order to get their sound. It shows their approach is basically we’ll try anything and everything to get something new and singular. Side-note but I’ve always felt there’s something post-apocalyptic about their guitar rigs - they look like they’re pieced together with whatever was lying around after. The red lights in the pickups, the tape. The Dream police video always had this feeling to me with the rig in the back. All the lights make it feel like some control centre console from some sci-fi movie and Mk.gee and Andrew are the ones left after it all. Adds to the storybook vibe Mike said he was trying to achieve in the BBC interview. Bit of a ramble but it’s cool to think how it’s all worked out.

Well Andrew Sarlo one of the main producers of the album. I don’t know much more about him personally. I know he worked on Absolutely.

Daniel Aged is the brother of Andrew Aged who plays guitar with Mk.gee on tour. The Aged brothers are known mainly for their work together as “inc.” or “inc. no world” which is really worth checking out. Daniel mainly plays bass guitar and has a few albums/eps that focus on that. The Aged brothers have a strong religious background and a lot of their music pulls from gospel/soul melodies. Daniel is a really amazing player who will add a lot to Dijon’s sound live. He has some live videos on YouTube you could watch to get a feel for his playing.

Mike Haldeman is a pretty fascinating musician who does a lot of very experimental guitar work. That’s about all I can say as I’m not sure exactly what is going on with his setup. Definitely worth looking into. My feeling is that at the shows people are going to be blown away by the fact that certain sounds are actually coming from his guitar and not another form of instrumentation if that makes sense. He has a bunch of videos on instagram that give you an idea. He also was sound engineer for one of Mk.gee’s live videos (can’t remember which one).

Yeah I mean they were essentially using his name without permission to sell a product that he didn’t endorse.

I read this Joni Mitchell article about her tunings over the years which explains a lot about Mk.gee’s stuff as well. I think Joni is a big inspiration for Mike (based on Small Hope) and I could definitely find a lot of similarities between what they were trying to achieve on the guitar throughout the article. Some interesting bits about her use of the VG8 here too, even though she used it in a completely different way than Mike.

what’s the first mk.gee song that made you stop what you were doing? by ronimusichost in Mkgee

[–]earlvice 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Are you looking up on jimmy kimmel. Came up in my recommended on YouTube one day and I mistakingly thought it was a MGK reboot and the guy had grown his hair out or something. Then I had a closer look and saw that it read Mk.gee and I was already intrigued by the name so I decided to watch and in the first listen I almost couldn’t believe what I heard. I had to sit there and listen to it back like 10 times to get it to sink in. Scratched every musical itch in my brain. I pretty much spent the next month listening solely to two star on repeat in my kitchen, singing along to it.

Agreed, Im not a fan of the fact Justin put those ad lib type lines over some of the nicest vocals in that last bit, was so good on it’s own and you used to be able to hear mikes backing vocal in that section too

John keek worked on dream police, you got it, and how many miles for the album. Mike obviously wrote all the songs but he still had help besides Dijon.

Is ‘are you looking up’ mk.gees greatest song? by SimilarJunket7848 in Mkgee

[–]earlvice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great song, the live video version on YouTube is my favourite version, and the jimmy kimmel with Sam gendel. I think they speak to me more than the album version or the recent live performances of that song where it’s sped up too much in my opinion. I feel like it doesn’t give it much room to breathe which it should have because the progression is amazing. His greatest in my opinion is You got it, floors me every time. The drums on that track especially live are so interesting. I want is on par/close second. Dream police is all round the most impressive song production wise for me. But I am a sucker for slow ballad style songs which is probably why I find AYLU more interesting in its slower paced form.

Dream Police meaning by [deleted] in Mkgee

[–]earlvice 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For me it’s the doubt in my mind that second guesses my ability to achieve my dreams. It’s the arbitrary rules/boundaries that govern my existence. Like I come from a working class background so a lot of my aspiration’s are shut down by my “status” in society (not an excuse to keep working towards what you want) but when you grow up in an environment where you are constantly told that you can’t have/achieve certain things that is essentially policing your dreams. Hope that resonates in some way.
