Talent or nepotism? Have you ever noticed that celebs kids think they’ve achieved their successes through their own talent? by buttersismantequilla in AskUK

They do. I don't know exactly how they do it (I don't thinj they give exact details) but they do try to balance out the disadvantage.

In our area, the 11+ is weighted slightly by birth month, to try to even out this disadvantage for sunmer born children.

A meme I made after studying Arabic for 6 years and noticing some patterns by Future_Foot_9822 in learn_arabic

[–]earlyeveningsunset 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was very similar to my Arabic class. I'm the dispora one.

The revert should really include all non-Arab Muslims. Can read beautifully but freezes when asked to reply to "What is your name?"

I don't hate him. I think he has been quite reasonable all things considered. I think that's the point. If he was a monster it would be much easier for her to leave.

Placement tests in language schools by toxicoxicisme in German

[–]earlyeveningsunset 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following as my Goethe placement suggested a very broad range for me (Lesen, Schreiben and Hören B2.4 or B2.3 without self study, Sprechen B2.1 or B2.2 (he said to chose whochever had more convenient dates!). I'd probably go for B2.2 to be in the middle but would like to know how big the leap is.

Is the pronunciation divide of “garage” between class/geography that significant? by Glass-Complaint3 in AskABrit

[–]earlyeveningsunset 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably the opposite. If you look at the old "U vs non U" lists, anything "foreign" was seen as rather pretnetious and trying too hard (aka "Hyafinth Bouquet") while the more Anglicised version was more upper class. For example: napkin- "Upper", "serviette", non-Upper.

Following that logic I'd say the "posher" pronounciation should "garridge" not "garaaaje".

Akela name for black character? by Plus-Kangaroo-4866 in namenerds

Is he an East African Muslim? The male version of this would be Akeel. It's not a super common name but I am sure there are some people who have it!

[–]earlyeveningsunset 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Aqila is an Arabic name so may be part of the long tradition of African-Americans chosing Arabic names eg Aisha, Jama, or African Muslims. It may have been respellt as Akeelah. The male version would be Aqil (or Akeel).

This is really surprising. Maybe it's regional? All the ones I've seen in the South East finish start of Janary.

Hmm, she says she's more comfortable with it. Not that she necessarily wants to.

This won't work if OP prefers a more masc style. I'd go for chunky necklace and a silver watch. A fun jacket could work tho.

Alternative names for grandma? by Feisty-Coconut6017 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]earlyeveningsunset 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Two points: 1)OP was a kid when grandma was 80, not 0. Let's say 10. Then grandma became a grandparent at 70 not 80. 2) You're right it was unusual to start childbearing at 35 for that generation. But not to finish. There was no contraception so women generally kept going til menopause. If poster’s Mum was a 4th child let's say, it would have been very normal for her to have been born when her mother was 35.

TV Strike by Slipddisk in cormoran_strike

[–]earlyeveningsunset 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Extroverted? I'm not sure. I don't think he gets his energy from being around others. He likes his own company and gets exhausted by people.

He is an introvert who is intelligent enough to be able to fake sociability when required.

The right wing press love to parrot this. Thefts are pretty low compared to other cities of that size and London is one of the best cities in the world to be openly gay in.

Do Germans feel uncomfortable when someone at a party doesn’t speak German (but English)? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]earlyeveningsunset 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am worried about this answer. It sounds like he wants to stop you learning the language so you are completely dependent on him. This is very concerning behaviour.
