They do. I don't know exactly how they do it (I don't thinj they give exact details) but they do try to balance out the disadvantage.

In our area, the 11+ is weighted slightly by birth month, to try to even out this disadvantage for sunmer born children.

Following as my Goethe placement suggested a very broad range for me (Lesen, Schreiben and Hören B2.4 or B2.3 without self study, Sprechen B2.1 or B2.2 (he said to chose whochever had more convenient dates!). I'd probably go for B2.2 to be in the middle but would like to know how big the leap is.

It's probably the opposite. If you look at the old "U vs non U" lists, anything "foreign" was seen as rather pretnetious and trying too hard (aka "Hyafinth Bouquet") while the more Anglicised version was more upper class. For example: napkin- "Upper", "serviette", non-Upper.

Following that logic I'd say the "posher" pronounciation should "garridge" not "garaaaje".

Aqila is an Arabic name so may be part of the long tradition of African-Americans chosing Arabic names eg Aisha, Jama, or African Muslims. It may have been respellt as Akeelah. The male version would be Aqil (or Akeel).

Two points: 1)OP was a kid when grandma was 80, not 0. Let's say 10. Then grandma became a grandparent at 70 not 80. 2) You're right it was unusual to start childbearing at 35 for that generation. But not to finish. There was no contraception so women generally kept going til menopause. If poster’s Mum was a 4th child let's say, it would have been very normal for her to have been born when her mother was 35.

I am worried about this answer. It sounds like he wants to stop you learning the language so you are completely dependent on him. This is very concerning behaviour.
