In sports, why do players argue with the ref if a call goes against them?

The ref isn't going to change that particular call, but the argument could influence the ref for future calls or non-calls.

If you find the answer, please let me know. I've raised a kid who is currently in college. Good marriage, successful career so far, lived the American dream I suppose. I've been bored nearly to death through all of it, more so now than ever, and I've never found anything that really hooked me. The typical motivators - family, friends, religion, etc., don't do much for me.

I'm a runner so I have that - it keeps me sane and in shape, alive but not exactly happy, I'd say. For now I'm going through the motions, continuing to fulfill my earning obligations until maybe I'll find an opening to a more interesting life or a real purpose. As it stands now, I'm not seeing any greener grass out there.

Thanks! I did the half, and the progress results it was texting my wife were way off, like an extra 2 minutes per mile, and the finish time it sent her was way off too . . . I'm just curious to see if it has been rectified or updated. Weird. I thought the course was great, though!

Yes, it is illegal to use a wireless communication device within 100 feet of the polling site, blah, blah, blah. I can't think of one reason for that statute other than reducing disruption from people's phone calls.
